Chapter 4

I did it on a Sunday night.

Nine forty-three p.m. The city was quiet. I was sitting on the kitchen floor with my back against the cabinet, the way I used to sit when I was a kid and the world felt too big for chairs. My coffee had gone cold. I didn't care.

I opened the Thomas family group chat. Solomon and Ruthie. Ethan's aunt Carol. His cousin Marcus. His sister-in-law Diane who sent Bible verses every Christmas. Eleven people who had sat at the same Thanksgiving table as me for seven years. Eleven people who thought they knew Ethan Thomas.

I airdropped the files one by one. All of them. Unedited.

Then I typed one line.

*I thought the family should know who Ethan really is.*

I hit send. Set the phone face-down on the tile. Stared at the ceiling.

For about thirty seconds, nothing happened.

Then the phone started going off like a fire alarm.

I didn't read the messages. I already knew what they'd say. Shock first, then denial, then the scramble to find some other explanation. I turned the screen off and sat with the vibrations until they slowed, then stopped.

Solomon Thomas had his stroke sometime before midnight. I found out from Ruthie's sister, who called me at 6 a.m. crying so hard I could barely understand her. Solomon was in the cardiac ward at Swedish. Ruthie had been admitted three hours later, her heart doing something irregular and frightened that the doctors wanted to watch.

I sat with that information for a long moment.

I did not feel nothing. I want to be honest about that. Solomon and Ruthie had been kind to me, in their careful, image-conscious way. Ruthie taught me her pie crust recipe. Solomon shook my hand at our wedding like he meant it.

But their son had poisoned me for three years and smiled while he did it.

I got up off the floor. Made fresh coffee. Went to work.

Monday morning, 8:47 a.m.

I'd had the banner made at a print shop in Fremont. The woman behind the counter hadn't blinked. Four feet wide, glossy, the text centered in clean corporate font:

**EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH — MOST DEVOTED PET**

I'd paid the delivery service extra to time it for the Monday morning rush. Their building lobby peaked at 8:45. The banner went up right as the elevator banks were fullest.

I know because someone posted a photo on LinkedIn before nine.

At 9:02, I logged into the anonymous account I'd created three days earlier. Uploaded the files to the company's all-staff Slack. Every channel. The general one, the project management one, the one they used for birthday announcements.

Then I closed the laptop and took a shower.

Diana called at 9:34. She was laughing, which I'd never heard before. She stopped herself quickly, cleared her throat. 'The firm's HR department is in emergency session. Legal is trying to get the files pulled, but they've already been screenshotted and forwarded to half the city.' A pause. 'Grace. It's done.'

'I know,' I said.

'Both termination notices came through by Tuesday noon. Cause. No severance.'

I thought about Nylah walking into that building Monday morning. The lobby. The banner. The moment she understood that the grieving wife she'd dismissed had been three steps ahead of her the entire time.

I hoped she'd seen it before anyone told her. I hoped she'd had one full second of reading it and not yet knowing.

---

Ethan's hospital phone rang at 2 p.m. Tuesday. I know because he called me immediately after, his voice stripped of every performance he'd ever practiced.

'She's blaming me.' His breath was ragged. 'She's saying I leaked it. She's saying I ruined her—'

'Ethan.'

'Grace, you have to tell her it wasn't me, you have to—'

'I don't have to do anything.'

Silence. The monitors beeped in the background.

'She blocked me,' he said. Quieter now. Something broken in it. 'She actually blocked me.'

I looked out the window. The sky was doing that flat gray thing again, indifferent and wide.

'Your parents are at Swedish,' I said. 'You should call them.'

'They won't pick up.' His voice cracked. 'My dad had a— they're saying it was a stroke, Grace. Because of what you—'

'Because of what *you* did,' I said. 'Everything that happened this week is a consequence of what you did. Not what I found. Not what I sent. What you *did*.'

He didn't say anything.

'Get some rest,' I said. 'You still have a long recovery ahead of you.'

I hung up.

Outside, a bird landed on the window ledge and sat there for a moment, very still, before it opened its wings and was gone.

I picked up my sketchbook. Found a clean page.

Started drawing.
