Chapter 2

Cassidy's bridesmaid dress was blush pink. She'd described it to me three times over the phone — empire waist, chiffon overlay, buttons down the back — like I might forget if she didn't repeat it. I hadn't forgotten. I just hadn't told her that I'd filed for divorce, or that my husband had looked at me across a hotel bedroom like he was calculating an exit, or that I'd been sleeping on the left side of a king-sized bed for three days because old habits are harder to break than marriages.

I found parking on Fifth. The boutique was one of those places with soft lighting and a French name and staff who speak in low, reverent tones like you're in a hospital. I suppose that should have felt familiar.

The dress was ready. I signed for it. I was almost to the door.

'You look tired, Ariya.'

I stopped.

Delaney Fisher was standing near the accessories display in a cream wrap dress, holding a pair of earrings she had no intention of buying. Her hair was perfect. Her smile was the kind that knows exactly what it's doing.

I had seen her once before — briefly, at a company event, across a room. Alistair had said her name without looking at me when he said it. I had filed that away and not examined it again. I understand now that I should have.

'I'm not doing this,' I said.

'Doing what?' She set the earrings down. 'I just said you look tired. It's a long drive from the hospital, isn't it? He told me you work nights mostly. He worries about you driving tired.' A small pause. 'He used to worry, anyway. We've had a lot to talk about lately.'

The other customers had gone still in that way people do when they sense something is about to happen and don't want to miss it.

'Vancouver was beautiful,' she said. 'Have you been? The hotel on the harbor. He ordered room service both mornings — eggs, no toast, black coffee. I'm sure you know.'

I did know. That was the thing. I knew exactly how he took his coffee. I knew the sound he made when he was reading something that interested him. I knew the weight of his arm across my waist at 3 a.m. I had built five years out of exactly that kind of knowing, and she was standing here wearing it like a coat she'd lifted off a chair.

My hand moved before I decided to move it.

The slap landed clean across her left cheek. Not hard enough to hurt her the way I wanted to. Hard enough to be real.

Silence.

Then Delaney's eyes went wide — not with pain, not with shock, but with something that looked almost like satisfaction — and she stepped backward toward the staircase, and she fell.

It was not a stumble. I know what stumbling looks like. I have watched bodies move under stress for five years in an ER. She went over that top step with the controlled intention of someone who had rehearsed it. Her scream came up before her body finished falling.

'She pushed me — she pushed me, I'm pregnant —'

The boutique erupted. Staff running. A customer on her phone already. Delaney on the landing below, curled on her side, one hand pressed to her abdomen, crying in a way that was completely convincing and completely false.

I stood at the top of the stairs with a garment bag in my hand and watched her perform it.

The police arrived in eleven minutes. I know because I counted.

They were not unkind. They were also not interested in my version of events. The security footage showed the slap. It showed the fall. It did not show the way her eyes had moved to the staircase a half-second before her feet did. Footage doesn't capture intent. I know that too.

I sat in a precinct interview room for two hours. The walls were the color of old teeth. Someone brought me water I didn't drink.

Alistair arrived at 4:15 p.m.

I heard his voice in the hallway before I saw him — that particular register he uses when he wants something and is accustomed to getting it. I sat up straighter. I told myself it meant nothing, that he was here because she had called him, that this was simply the next thing happening in a sequence of things I had not yet fully mapped.

He walked past the open door of my interview room without looking in.

He went to her.

I watched through the narrow window as he sat down beside Delaney in the waiting area. She turned toward him immediately, the way a plant turns toward light. He put his hand over hers.

I looked at that for a long moment. Then I looked away.

I didn't know, sitting in that room, that Josue Perez was already at a workstation somewhere in the city, pulling up Seattle Grace security timestamps, beginning the careful, methodical work of turning a routine Tuesday night — me, a hallway, a packet of cold medicine for a patient in Room 7 — into evidence of something monstrous.

I just sat there with my water and my garment bag and the fading sting in my palm.

Outside, the rain had started again. Seattle in January. It never really stops.
