Chapter 3

The hospital called me at noon.

Not a patient emergency. Administrative. A formal notice of a pending review of my clinical conduct, attached to a complaint filed with the Washington State Medical Commission. I stood in the break room and read it twice. Then I folded it into my coat pocket and finished my shift.

I told myself it was Delaney. I told myself Alistair would see through it. I had been telling myself a lot of things lately.

His assistant called at six. Alistair needed me to come to Wright Capital Tower to sign the divorce paperwork. His attorney had prepared the initial documents. Could I come at seven? The underground parking level — he kept an office there for late signings, she said. Private. No press.

I almost didn't go. I stood in my apartment for ten minutes with my keys in my hand, just standing there, looking at the rain on the window.

Then I thought: paperwork. An ending. Something that would finally be finished.

I went.

---

I found out later — much later — how the afternoon had gone for him.

The dossier arrived at two o'clock. Delivered by Delaney's attorney in a black portfolio. Forty pages. Organized with the kind of care that someone puts into something they need to look irrefutable.

Alistair sat alone in his office for forty minutes.

The altered footage came first. Security camera, Seattle Grace Memorial, a Tuesday in November. Me in the hallway outside the prenatal unit. A packet of cold medicine in my hand — I remembered it, Room 7, a patient with a sinus infection who'd asked me to grab it from the nursing station. The footage had been edited. The timestamp had been shifted. The camera angle cropped. What it looked like now was not what it was.

Then the lab reports. Delaney's bloodwork. Josue Perez's signature on each page, his credentials listed underneath in clean institutional font. The language was precise and clinical and completely false.

Then Perez's sworn statement. He spoke the way disgraced surgeons speak when they have been given back a podium — with the measured authority of someone whose credibility has been purchased and is determined to sound earned. Ariya Reed had administered a compound contraindicated in pregnancy. The miscarriage was not accidental. The evidence was consistent with deliberate intervention.

Alistair closed the folder.

He did not call me. He did not ask for an independent review. He did not sit with the question for another hour, or a day, or the ten minutes I had stood at my window with my keys.

He picked up his phone and made two calls.

---

The parking garage smelled like concrete and exhaust. That particular cold that lives underground, damper than outside cold, the kind that gets into your joints.

I was ten feet from the elevator when they stepped out of the shadow between two parked cars.

I knew them. Not their names. Their faces, vaguely — Alistair's security staff, the kind of men who stand near exits at corporate events and look at nothing in particular.

I said, 'I'm here to sign paperwork.'

Neither of them said anything.

Then Alistair walked out from behind a concrete pillar.

He was in his work clothes. Gray suit, no tie. The same face I had loved for five years, the same jaw, the same eyes — but something behind them had gone somewhere I didn't recognize. Something flat and decided. The boardroom before an acquisition.

'Alistair.' My voice was steady. I made it steady. 'What is this?'

'You know what it is,' he said.

I didn't run. I don't know why. Maybe because he was still my husband. Maybe because my brain had not yet completed the calculation of what was actually happening.

They had my arms before I finished the thought.

The concrete was cold through my clothes. I heard my own voice say his name — once, like a question — and then the first one landed and everything became very simple and very loud.

I screamed. I know I screamed because my throat hurt for weeks afterward. I screamed his name and I screamed stop and I screamed things that weren't words at all. My hands were pressed flat against the floor and I could not move them and the sound the mallet made was a sound I have not been able to forget.

Alistair stood and watched.

He didn't look away. That's what I remember most. He stood with his hands in his pockets and watched with that same flat, decided expression, like he was watching a document being shredded. Something that needed to be done. Something being finished.

I stopped screaming somewhere around the sixth finger. Not because it stopped hurting. Because the sound had nowhere left to go.

At some point it was over. I know that because the weight on my arms lifted.

I lay on the concrete floor of the parking garage of Wright Capital Tower and looked at my hands. My surgeon's hands. The hands that had held a scalpel at 3 a.m. with a man's life on the other end of it. The hands that had pressed an epinephrine pen to a woman's thigh in a hotel room while my husband watched from the foot of the bed.

The rain outside was still going. I could hear it distantly, at street level, through the ventilation gaps.

Alistair turned and walked to the elevator.

The doors closed.

I was still on the floor.
