Chapter 3

I left Adrian’s tower without telling him or Noah.

I needed to see my parents. Even after seeing the forged death certificate, the canceled accounts, and the cut brake lines with Lauren's signature on the garage drop-off slip, a small, desperate part of me clung to hope.

I needed to hear my mother say they had been lied to. I needed my father to tell me Ethan had deceived them both.

The drive to the colonial house in Riverdale where I grew up took twenty minutes. The porch light was still on.

I walked up the front steps, my injured leg aching with every rise, and pressed the doorbell.

Footsteps approached from the other side. The brass lock clicked, and the heavy oak door swung open.

My mother stood in the entryway, wearing her silk bathrobe. She looked at my face, but she didn’t scream. She didn’t drop her glasses. She didn’t reach out to touch my cheeks or pull me into an embrace.

Her face drained of color, her eyes widening with pure dread.

"Rachel…" she whispered. "Why did you come back?"

The question hit me with the force of an oncoming truck.

In that single second, the desperate hope in my chest turned to ash. I didn't even need to ask what she knew.

"You're not surprised," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

My father walked into the foyer behind her, holding a mug of tea. When his eyes landed on me, his hands didn't shake. He set the mug on the hall table, his jaw tightening into a grim line.

"Come inside, Rachel," my father said quietly. "Don't stand out on the porch where the neighbors can see."

I stepped into the living room. Everything was the same—the familiar Persian rug, the family portraits on the mantle, the grandfather clock ticking in the corner.

"How long?" I asked, turning to face them. "How long have you known I was legally dead?"

My father let out a slow, tired breath, sitting down in his leather armchair. He rubbed his temples, refusing to meet my eyes directly.

"Since August," he said.

"You signed off on it," I stated, the realization carving through my ribs. "The probate court required next-of-kin confirmation."

"Ethan came to us with the documents," my father said, his voice taking on a defensive, reasonable tone. "Rachel, look at the reality of the situation. You were shattered in that crash. For nearly a year, you couldn't walk across a room without groaning in pain. You spent months in bed, hooked up to monitors and high on painkillers."

"I was recovering!" I yelled. "I was getting better!"

"Ethan is thirty-five years old," my father cut in, raising his voice. "He has an empire to run. He couldn't be a full-time caretaker for the rest of his youth, watching his wife slowly deteriorate. It was destroying him."

"So you let him replace me with Lauren?"

My mother stepped forward, wringing her hands, her expression twisted into a pained grimace. "Lauren has loved Ethan since before you two even got married, Rachel. You always had everything. The business, the spotlight, the perfect marriage. After the accident, you were a ghost of yourself anyway. Why let the entire family fall apart? Why drag Ethan down when Lauren could step in and keep our family's name at the top of the Bennett Group?"

"Let life move on," my father added softly. "That’s all we wanted. For everyone to move on."

I looked from my mother’s anxious face to my father’s cold, pragmatic posture.

"Did you cry at my funeral?" I asked.

The room dropped into absolute silence.

The grandfather clock ticked against the wall. Neither of them answered. Neither of them could look at me.

The front door slammed open before either of them could speak.

Lauren stormed into the living room. She was still wearing the floor-length black evening gown from the memorial gala, her hair perfectly coiffed, her diamond earrings catching the light.

She stopped dead when she saw me standing by the fireplace. But instead of fear, her face hardened into pure, vicious irritation.

"What are you doing here?" Lauren snapped, throwing her designer clutch onto the sofa. "I told Ethan we should have changed the garage codes."

"Lauren," my mother warned weakly.

"No, Mom, stop walking on eggshells!" Lauren turned on me, stepping close enough that I could smell the champagne on her breath. "Why couldn't you just stay away, Rachel? You were already gone. Why couldn't you let us have the life you couldn't live anymore?"

"You cut my brake lines," I said, staring directly into her eyes.

Lauren didn't even flinch. A bitter smirk curled the corner of her lips.

"You were always so high and mighty," she said, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper. "Building companies, managing millions, playing the brilliant architect wife while I stood in the background. But look at you now. You limp. You're broken. Even if you survived that crash, you would have lost Ethan eventually. You would have lost the board. I just sped up the timeline."

"You took my clothes," I said. "My mother's jewelry. My shares."

"Because someone had to wear them!" Lauren scoffed, raising her right hand. "You think you could walk into a charity gala looking like that? You're a liability, Rachel. You have nothing left."

On her ring finger, our mother's vintage emerald ring glowed under the chandelier.

I reached out before she could pull away and gripped her fingers.

Lauren gasped, trying to yank her hand back, but I held her tight. With a smooth, firm tug, I pulled the emerald ring off her knuckle.

She froze, her eyes widening with sudden panic.

I looked down at the deep green gem for three seconds. Then, without a word, I took Lauren's limp hand and slid the ring right back onto her finger, pushing it down until it rested against her skin.

"Keep it," I whispered, leaning in close so only she could hear. "I want you wearing everything you stole when I take it all back."

Lauren stared at me, speechlessly backing away toward the hallway.

I didn't say goodbye to my parents. I walked out the front door into the cold night, leaving them in their silence.

By midnight, I was back on the top floor of Cole Healthcare Capital.

Adrian was waiting by the bar with a fresh cup of black coffee, which he handed to me without asking where I had been. Noah was still hunched over his triple-monitor setup, running automated security sweeps.

"Did you find what you were looking for?" Adrian asked quietly.

"I found out that nobody is coming to save me," I said, setting the mug on the glass desk. "Noah. Pull up the Bennett Group's original charter from eight years ago."

Noah's fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard. "The root directory is locked under a secondary master partition. Ethan changed all the administrative passwords after he thought you were dead."

"He didn't change mine," I said. "Type: *Phoenix-Eight-Zero-Zero-Alpha-Seven*."

Noah typed the string and hit enter.

A series of green checkmarks cascaded down the center display. The screen flashed bright, unlocking an encrypted vault that had remained untouched since the day Ethan and I signed our incorporation papers in a tiny shared apartment.

`FOUNDER OVERRIDE ACCEPTED: RACHEL BENNETT.`

"Look at Section 14.3," I commanded.

Adrian leaned over Noah’s shoulder, his eyes scanning the legal code. A slow, razor-sharp smile spread across his lips.

"The contested probate clause," Adrian said, his voice laced with genuine respect. "If a founder's death certificate is officially contested by a verified biometric key within ninety days, all voting rights transferred by probate are immediately placed in an administrative deep freeze pending judicial review."

"Ethan personally controls seventy-one percent of the company, and Lauren's amended trust controls another twenty-seven," Noah said, looking up with wide eyes. "Together, they think they control ninety-eight percent. If we trigger this clause, Ethan's voting power drops back to his original forty-nine percent instantly. He won't have the majority."

"We can file the emergency injunction with the state court right now," Adrian said, reaching for his secure phone. "By eight tomorrow morning, the press will know you're alive, the police will open a fraud investigation, and Ethan will be answering subpoenas before lunch."

"No," I said, putting my hand over Adrian's phone.

Adrian paused, looking down at me. "Rachel, the longer you wait, the more assets he can liquidate."

"I don't want an injunction, Adrian," I said, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of mercy. "I don't want him answering questions in a quiet judge's chambers while his lawyers spin a story about a medical misunderstanding."

"What do you want?" Adrian asked.

"In forty-eight hours, the Bennett Group holds its annual global shareholder summit," I said. "Ethan invited every institutional investor, every media outlet in the country, and every city official to watch him formally absorb my shares and announce his multi-billion-dollar merger."

I looked at my reflection in the dark floor-to-ceiling glass, seeing the woman who had survived the crash, the lies, and the betrayal.

"I need forty-eight hours," I said. "Let him stand on that stage believing he won. I want the grave shifted from beneath my feet to his."
