Chapter 4

The livestream was broadcast in crisp 4K across every major business network in the country.

On the grand stage of the Metropolitan Ballroom, Ethan stood beneath a halo of warm golden spotlights. He looked polished, commanding, and impeccably styled in a charcoal Tom Ford suit. By his side stood Lauren.

My chest constricted the moment the camera zoomed in on her.

Lauren was wearing the midnight-blue silk column gown I had commissioned from an Italian atelier two weeks before my car crash. I had never had the chance to put it on. The custom hemline, tailored specifically to my height, trailed along the polished stage floor as she smiled into the flashing lights.

"Over the past year," Ethan began, his voice echoing through the packed auditorium with rich resonance, "our company has endured unimaginable tragedy. When Rachel was taken from us, a part of the Bennett Group died with her."

He paused, lowering his head just long enough for the cameras to capture his sorrowful expression. In the front row, several board members nodded in sympathetic approval.

"To ensure her vision endures," Ethan announced, turning toward a massive velvet curtain at the back of the stage, "I am proud to reveal the renaming of our flagship downtown medical facility. Moving forward, it will be known as The Rachel Bennett Center for Restorative Medicine."

The curtain dropped. A sleek silver rendering of the building appeared on the towering digital display behind them, my name stamped across the facade in embossed platinum lettering.

The audience erupted into a standing ovation.

They weren't honoring me. They were using my name as a decorative brand to sanitize their new beginning.

"Rachel would have wanted our work to continue," Ethan said, waiting for the applause to taper off. He turned toward Lauren, his voice softening into rehearsed tenderness. "And she would have wanted the two people who loved her most to carry that torch together."

Ethan reached into his jacket pocket and produced a polished black velvet box.

Lauren pressed her manicured fingers to her lips, playing the role of the overwhelmed, tearful bride-to-be. The emerald ring—my mother’s heirloom—sparkled brightly under the stage lights.

"Lauren," Ethan said, lifting the microphone as he clicked the box open to reveal a massive radiant-cut diamond. "Will you take this step with me?"

Lauren reached out her trembling hand. "Yes, Ethan. A thousand times, yes."

A server handed her a crystal champagne flute as the crowd cheered. Ethan lifted the ring from the velvet cushion, stepping forward to slide it onto her finger.

He never got the chance.

The audio system let out a sharp, piercing screech of static that tore through the ballroom speakers.

Every single LED display across the venue went pitch black.

The ambient lights flickered and died, plunging the five hundred guests into sudden shadow. A collective murmur of confusion swept through the room.

Ethan froze, the diamond ring suspended between his fingers. He lowered his hand, his brow furrowing as he glared toward the technical booth. "What's going on with the power?"

Before the stage crew could respond, the primary video wall snapped back on.

A single line of stark, blood-red text flashed across the forty-foot screen:

`DEATH CERTIFICATE DISPUTED.`

`FOUNDER STATUS RESTORED FOR ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW.`

The murmurs in the crowd instantly spiked into frantic whispers. Reporters scrambled for their cameras, pointing lenses at the towering red banner.

Then, the red text vanished.

The video feed shifted into a sharp, high-definition broadcast.

I sat in the high-backed leather chair at the head of the fortieth-floor executive boardroom—the private conference room Ethan and I had designed together when we built the Bennett Group tower. The city skyline stretched out through the panoramic glass behind me.

I looked straight into the camera lens.

"Hi, Ethan," I said, my voice cutting through the venue speakers with razor-sharp clarity. "Sorry I'm late to my own funeral."

The entire ballroom descended into total, breathless pandemonium.

Lauren gasped, stumbling back two full steps. The crystal champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering violently against the hardwood stage. Golden liquid and broken shards splattered across the hem of my custom blue gown.

"Rachel?" Lauren whimpered, her face draining of every drop of color.

Ethan dropped the velvet ring box. His jaw went slack, his eyes bulging as he stared at the towering image of my face on the screen.

"No," Ethan muttered, his voice caught in his throat before he remembered the live microphone in his hand. "No, this is impossible. This is a sick deepfake. Cut the feed!"

He turned toward the production wings, waving his arms frantically. "Cut the power! Shut it down right now!"

"You can't cut the feed, Ethan," I said calmly, leaning forward and resting my forearms against the polished glass table. "The master broadcast controls are locked under root administrative protocol. Just like the company charter."

Camera flashes went off in rapid, blinding succession as journalists realized the feed was transmitting to millions of viewers nationwide.

"For ninety days, you told the world I succumbed to post-traumatic complications," I continued, pressing a button on the control pad before me.

A split screen opened beside my face.

On the left, the forged death certificate appeared, displaying the August 14th timestamp and Dr. Robert Miller’s signature. On the right, Noah's telemetry logs and the financial transaction records scrolled in clear, undeniable detail.

"Twenty million dollars in executive term life insurance, claimed within forty-eight hours of my alleged death," I stated, my voice completely steady. "A twenty-two percent equity transfer to an offshore shell company. And an amended family trust, executed while I was sedated and trapped inside my own home."

"Rachel, stop!" Ethan roared, charging toward the front of the stage as if he could reach through the monitor. He looked completely unhinged, his polished facade cracking in front of every major investor in the city. "Security! Clear the hall! Turn off the main breaker!"

"I invoked Section 14.3 of our founding charter fifteen minutes ago," I announced, ignoring his shouts. "The Contested Probate Clause is officially active. As of this second, Ethan Bennett and Lauren Bennett have zero voting power from any shares transferred through my alleged death."

Ethan stopped dead at the edge of the stage.

"Every single share you claimed through my death has been placed in administrative escrow," I said, holding his terrified gaze through the lens. "You have forty-nine percent. I hold forty-nine percent. And the decisive two percent remains with the independent board trust until the court completes its review."

"You ruined us," Lauren screamed from behind him, clutching her chest in front of the live cameras. "You ruined everything!"

I looked directly at Ethan, whose chest was heaving with silent, frantic panic.

"You told everyone your wife died," I said softly, delivering the final blow. "I'm just telling them what actually died: your control of my company."

Noah slammed the master override switch.

The screen cut to black, severing the feed completely.

Silence settled over the boardroom.

I sat back in the leather chair, letting out a long, slow breath. My hands were perfectly still on the table. For the first time in three years, the suffocating weight in my chest felt manageable.

Adrian stepped away from the door, clapping his hands in a slow, rhythmic applause.

"Masterful," Adrian said, his dark eyes gleaming with quiet admiration. "The Bennett Group stock has already plummeted twelve percent in after-hours trading. Ethan will be besieged by board members and federal regulators before he can even leave the hotel parking lot."

He held out a dark wool coat for me. "Our private transport is in the underground concourse. We should move before the media figures out which building you're transmitting from."

I reached for the coat, preparing to stand, when the heavy double doors of the boardroom were thrown open.

Noah stood in the doorway.

His laptop was tucked under his arm, his shirt untucked, and his face was utterly, terrifyingly white. He wasn't smiling. He looked like a man who had just looked into an open grave.

"Noah?" I asked, pausing with one arm through my sleeve. "Did the escrow confirmation go through?"

"The escrow is fine," Noah rasped, his chest heaving as he walked toward the table. "The stock freeze is holding."

"Then what is it?" Adrian asked, his voice instantly dropping its casual tone.

Noah set his rugged laptop down on the glass, turning the screen toward us with trembling hands.

"When I was digging through the hospital's central server to verify Dr. Miller's credentials," Noah said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper, "I recovered a purged intake log from the trauma unit. It was deleted at four in the morning on the night of your car accident."

I stepped closer to the display.

On the screen was an emergency ultrasound record dated three years ago.

`PATIENT: RACHEL BENNETT`

`ADMISSION PROTOCOL: LEVEL 1 TRAUMA`

`OBSERVATION: PREGNANCY, 10 WEEKS. FETAL CARDIAC ACTIVITY PRESENT.`

My breath caught in my throat. The room seemed to tilt beneath my boots.

"I... I was pregnant?" I whispered, my fingers digging into the edge of the desk. "Ethan told me... he told me the impact caused a complete miscarriage in the ambulance."

"Look at the second file, Rachel," Noah urged, clicking open an internal surgical log from six months later. "You were in an induced coma for two hundred and fourteen days. But six weeks before you woke up, there’s an unlisted procedure code signed by Ethan's private physician."

Adrian leaned over the monitor, scanning the medical codes with razor-sharp intensity. His jaw hardened, and when he looked up at me, the dark composure in his eyes had shattered into raw shock.

"Rachel," Adrian said, his voice dead serious. "I don't think the baby died in the accident."
