Chapter 3

The private investigator's email came in at 6:14 AM. No greeting. Just a subject line: *Found it.*

I sat up in bed and opened the attachment before my coffee finished brewing. Spreadsheets. Bank statements. Three years of transfers, all from a shell account traced back to Noor Moreno, all landing in Margaret Calloway's checking account like clockwork. Twelve thousand here. Eight thousand there. Never the same amount twice, never on the same date. Careful. Methodical. The work of a woman who thought no one would ever look.

I got my leather journal from the nightstand drawer. My hands were steady as I copied each figure onto a fresh page, color-coding them the way I used to catalogue my mother's jewelry after the funeral—blue for confirmed, red for suspicious, green for dates that lined up with something else. Three years of hush money. Three years of silence bought one deposit at a time.

I wrote until my wrist ached. When I finished, I sat back and looked at the page, at the tidy rows of numbers that added up to a woman's murder. It didn't feel like triumph. It felt like a scalpel sliding under skin—necessary, clean, and cold.

This was the first thread. I intended to pull until the whole thing came apart.

---

I hadn't planned to go to the townhouse that afternoon. But Alianna had posted a photo—the foyer, my mother's antique mirror in the background, captioned *new beginnings 🤍*—and something in me just walked out the door before I told it to.

The house smelled different. Under the lavender and dust, there was something new. Her perfume, cloying and sweet, layered over everything like a coat of cheap paint. My mother's books were still on the shelves in the study, but someone had shoved them sideways to make room for framed photos I didn't recognize. Joseph and Noor at some gala. Alianna in a cap and gown she never should have worn to a school my mother's money paid for.

I found her upstairs, in the master bedroom. My mother's bedroom. Boxes of fabric swatches were spread across the bed, and Alianna stood at the window holding two curtain samples up to the light, her head tilted like she was choosing a lipstick shade.

"Oh, Peyton." She turned, and her face did that soft, wounded thing it always did in front of an audience—except there was no one else here. Just habit now. Just muscle memory for a performance she couldn't stop giving. "I didn't hear you come in."

"This was her room."

"I know." She set the swatches down gently, almost reverently, and touched the gold pendant at her throat. "It's a beautiful room. Though the color palette is a little..." She wrinkled her nose. "Dated. No offense. Your mother clearly had a certain taste."

"Don't."

"I just think this place could use a woman's touch." Her voice dropped, soft as a confession, cruel as a blade slipped between ribs. "A living one."

The room went white at the edges.

I didn't remember crossing the floor. I only remember the sound—a sharp, flat crack that seemed to hang in the air longer than it should have, longer than any sound had a right to. My palm stung. Alianna's head had snapped sideways, a red bloom already rising on her cheek, her hand flying up to touch it in slow, theatrical disbelief.

For one second, just one, her mask dropped completely. Her eyes went flat and hard, calculating, ugly in a way I'd never seen in public. Then, like a curtain falling back into place, her chin trembled. Tears welled, perfectly timed.

"You hit me," she breathed. "You actually—"

That's when I heard it. Tires on gravel. The low, familiar growl of Zane's car pulling into the driveway.

Something shifted in Alianna's face—recognition, opportunity, a flicker of something almost gleeful beneath the tears. She moved fast. Faster than I expected. Her fingers closed around my forearm like a vise, and she twisted toward the hallway, toward the top of the grand staircase, dragging me with her.

"Alianna—"

She threw herself backward.

The world tilted sideways. I felt the floor disappear from under me, felt my own weight betray me, felt the first stair catch my hip like a fist. After that there was no order to it—just impact after impact, the banister spinning past my vision, a scream that might have been mine, the taste of copper flooding my mouth.

I hit the marble floor at the bottom and everything went white, then black, then a dull red throbbing that filled my skull like water filling a glass. My leg was bent wrong. I could see it, distantly, the way you see something underwater. Blood ran warm down my temple, pooling against my cheek, sticky and slow.

Above me, Alianna was already crying—soft, breathless, perfectly pitched sobs, cradling her elbow where a thin scrape bloomed pink against her skin.

The front door slammed open. I heard Zane's footsteps in the foyer, fast, urgent.

I tried to lift my head. Tried to say his name.

I couldn't tell, in that moment, if the sound I made was his name at all—or if it was already too late for it to matter.
