Chapter 4

The front door slammed open like a gunshot.

I was still on the floor. Still bent wrong, my leg screaming in a language I didn't have words for yet. Blood ran warm down my temple, pooling against the cold marble, and somewhere above me Alianna was crying—soft, breathless little sobs that sounded like a lullaby.

Zane's footsteps echoed in the foyer. Fast. Urgent.

I tried to lift my head. Tried to say his name. My vision swam, red at the edges, but I could see him—tall, dark suit, the man I'd given up everything for—crossing the threshold with my father right behind him.

He looked at me.

I know he did. I saw his eyes sweep over my body, over the blood, over the leg bent at an angle that made the housekeeper gasp when she found me later.

Then he stepped over me.

Not around. Over. His shoe passed inches from my outstretched hand.

He dropped to his knees beside Alianna on the third step, where she sat cradling her elbow—barely a scrape, pink against her pale skin, nothing that would scar. His hands were gentle as he tilted her arm toward the light, his voice soft in a way I hadn't heard in years.

"Are you hurt? Can you move it?"

"I think so," she whispered, and a tear slipped down her cheek. Perfect. Timed like a metronome. "She just—she came at me, Zane. I don't know what I did wrong."

Joseph crouched beside them, his hand on Alianna's shoulder, his face creased with concern. For her. Only her.

I lay on the marble and stared at the ceiling. The chandelier above me blurred and sharpened, blurred and sharpened, a crystal kaleidoscope that didn't care if I lived or died.

Zane finally looked down at me. Not with worry. Not with fear. With something cold and distant, like I was a stain on expensive fabric.

"All of this over a house, Peyton?" His voice was ice. Precise. Surgical. "When did you become this heartless?"

I didn't answer. Couldn't, maybe. My mouth tasted like copper and ash.

But something inside me answered for me. Something that had been holding on by a thread since the night I heard him on the phone, since the moment I realized my entire marriage was a cage I'd walked into with my eyes closed.

The thread snapped.

I didn't cry. I didn't beg. I didn't reach for him the way I'd reached for him a thousand times before, hoping this time he'd reach back.

I just stared at the ceiling, and for the first time in my life, my eyes were completely, terrifyingly dry.

---

The ambulance came twenty minutes later. Not because Zane called. Not because Joseph thought to check if his daughter was still breathing.

The housekeeper—Margaret, shaking and pale—had dialed 911 from the kitchen phone, her voice breaking as she tried to explain what she'd walked into.

By the time the paramedics loaded me onto the stretcher, Zane and Alianna were gone. I heard his car pull away as they were fitting the oxygen mask over my face. Joseph stood in the doorway, his arms crossed, watching me leave like I was a piece of furniture being removed.

He didn't ride with me.

No one did.

---

The hospital room was white. Sterile. The kind of white that makes you feel like you've already disappeared.

They set my leg—fractured tibia, the doctor said, clean break, six weeks minimum—and stitched the gash across my forehead with the efficiency of someone who'd done it a thousand times before. Twelve stitches. I counted each one in the mirror after they left, tracing the black thread with my fingertip.

I looked like someone else. Someone harder.

Good.

I called Claire Sutton from the hospital bed, my voice steady even though my hands were shaking.

"Pursue everything," I said. "No settlements. No compromises. I want him to feel every single proceeding."

"Peyton—"

"Maximum aggression, Claire."

There was a pause. Then: "Understood."

I hung up and opened my journal. The one I'd been keeping since the night I overheard Zane's phone call, the one filled with color-coded notes and dates and bank transfers that added up to my mother's murder. I turned to a fresh page and began writing. Margaret's confession. The wire transfers. Noor's visits in the weeks before my mother collapsed. I wrote until my wrist ached, until the words blurred together, until the nurse came in and told me I needed to rest.

I didn't rest.

I opened the bag the housekeeper had packed for me—clothes, toiletries, things I didn't ask for but was grateful to have. At the bottom, wrapped in tissue paper, were my old Latin dance heels. The ones I'd kept in the back of my closet for years, the ones I couldn't bring myself to throw away even when I'd promised Zane I'd given up dance for good.

I set them on the nightstand beside my hospital bed and looked at them for a long time.

The leather was cracked. The heels were scuffed. But they were mine.

And I was going to wear them again.

---

Two days later, I was alone in my hotel room—discharged, medicated, moving like a ghost through space—when I finally opened the boxes.

My mother's belongings. The ones I'd kept sealed since the funeral, the ones I couldn't bear to touch because touching them meant admitting she was really gone.

I opened them now.

Books. Jewelry. Silk scarves that still smelled like her perfume. And at the bottom of the third box, tucked inside her copy of *Anna Karenina* between two pressed roses, I found it.

A letter. Written in her careful, slanting hand.

*My darling Peyton,*

*If you're reading this, I'm already gone. I'm sorry I couldn't tell you this while I was still here. I'm sorry I couldn't protect you the way I should have.*

*I know what Noor is. I've known for a long time. I know what she wants, and I know your father is too weak to stop her. But I won't let her take everything from you.*

*There's a safe-deposit box. The key is with this letter. Inside, you'll find documents—ownership papers for the hotel, transfer deeds, everything you'll need to prove what's yours. I made sure of it. She can't touch it. He can't touch it.*

*You are stronger than you know, my love. Stronger than I ever was.*

*Don't let them make you small.*

*All my love,*

*Mom*

I read it twice without moving. My fingernails pressed into my palms, leaving crescent moons in the skin. My face was perfectly still.

Then I reached into the envelope and pulled out the key.

Small. Silver. Ordinary.

The kind of thing that could unlock everything.
