Chapter 2

The divorce papers sat on Zane's desk like a bomb that had already detonated.

I knew because I'd timed it. Called his assistant at 8:47 AM from a burner phone, pretending to be a courier service confirming delivery. She'd chirped that yes, Mr. Bennett had just arrived, and yes, she'd placed the envelope on his desk personally.

I hung up and stared at my phone. 8:52 AM. He would've opened it by now. Read the petition. Seen my signature—clean, final, not a tremor in the ink.

I waited for the call. The furious text. The knock on my hotel room door.

Nothing came.

At 9:03, I realized the silence was worse than anything he could've said.

---

Claire Sutton's office occupied the forty-second floor of a glass tower in Midtown. Everything about it was sharp—the angles of the furniture, the cut of her charcoal suit, the way she looked at me when I walked in at ten o'clock.

"You're early," she said.

"I don't sleep much anymore."

She gestured to the chair across from her desk. "Good. Neither do I. Let's use the time."

I liked her immediately.

Claire slid a thick folder across the polished surface. "I've reviewed everything you sent. The boutique hotel documents, the marriage contract, the financial entanglements. Your husband is a controlling bastard, but he's a sloppy one."

Something loosened in my chest. "Sloppy how?"

"The ownership structure he's using to leverage the hotel—it's built on an assumption that may not hold." She flipped open the folder, tapping a highlighted section with one manicured nail. "He's claiming joint marital assets, but the original deed lists your mother as sole owner. If she transferred ownership to you before her death—directly to you, not into a marital trust—then Zane has no legal standing. None."

I leaned forward. "She would've done that. She was meticulous about her estate."

"Then we need proof." Claire's eyes were steel. "Personal papers. A will. Transfer documents. Anything your mother kept that Zane hasn't gotten his hands on yet."

"I know where to look," I said quietly.

Claire studied me for a long moment. "You're not going to break, are you?"

"I already did," I said. "This is what came after."

She smiled—thin, sharp, approving. "Then let's bury him."

---

The Brooklyn brownstone still had the same creaking third step. I'd spent my childhood in this house, back when my mother was alive and my father still pretended to be a man of integrity. After she died, Joseph had moved us to the Upper East Side townhouse—her townhouse, the one he'd now filled with his mistress and her daughter.

This place had been left to rot.

I let myself in with the key I'd never returned. The air inside was stale, thick with dust and the ghost of my mother's lavender perfume. I stood in the foyer and let the memories wash over me—her laugh in the kitchen, her hand smoothing my hair before dance recitals, the way she'd always believed I was destined for something extraordinary.

I climbed the stairs.

Margaret Calloway was in the second-floor sitting room, folding linens that didn't need folding. She looked up when I entered, and her face went pale.

"Miss Peyton," she whispered.

"Margaret." I closed the door behind me. "We need to talk."

She set down the linens with shaking hands. "I don't know what you mean."

I pulled a folder from my bag—empty, but she didn't know that—and set it on the table between us. "I have your bank records, Margaret. Every deposit. Every wire transfer. All of it traced back to Noor Moreno."

Her face crumpled. "Please—"

"Tell me what happened to my mother."

"I don't—I didn't—" Her breath came in short gasps. "I didn't know. I swear I didn't know what she was planning."

"Who? Noor?"

Margaret nodded, tears streaming down her weathered cheeks. "She came here. Three, maybe four times in the weeks before your mother passed. Always when Mr. Andrews was at work. She'd go upstairs, into the bedroom, and I—I didn't think anything of it. I thought maybe she was... I don't know. Preparing."

"Preparing for what?"

"For after," Margaret whispered. "For when she'd take your mother's place."

My hands curled into fists in my lap. "What else?"

"The prescriptions. Your mother's heart medication. The pharmacy called one day, said there'd been a change to the dosage. I thought the doctor had ordered it, but—" She broke off, sobbing. "Two weeks later, your mother collapsed. And after the funeral, Mrs. Moreno... she gave me money. Said it was for my discretion. For my years of service. I didn't ask questions. God forgive me, I didn't ask."

I stood slowly. My legs felt steady. My voice felt steadier. "You're going to write all of this down, Margaret. Every detail. Every date. Every dollar."

"She'll destroy me," Margaret choked out.

"She already destroyed my mother," I said. "Now you choose."

I left her there, shaking and small, and walked back into the cold October air.

My phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number.

*We need to talk. —Z*

I deleted it without reading it twice.

Then I called the private investigator Claire had recommended and gave him Margaret Calloway's full name, bank account number, and a list of dates. "I need everything," I said. "And I need it fast."

"How fast?"

"Yesterday."

He laughed. "I like you already."

I hung up and stood on the brownstone steps, looking out at the street where I used to play as a child. Where my mother used to watch me from the window, smiling.

"I'm going to make this right," I whispered to the empty air. "I promise."

Somewhere across the city, Zane Bennett was staring at divorce papers and realizing that silence could be the cruelest answer of all.
