Claire is setting the table for a long-awaited dinner when Killian finally arrives—hours late, empty-handed, and accompanied by a petite stranger with doe eyes. He introduces her as his sister, but every instinct screams that something is deeply wrong. My Husband Chose His “Sister” Over Me Chapter 1

It rained hard on Tuesday evening. The drops tapped against the tall windows of our Upper East Side mansion.

I was setting the dining table when the front door opened. Killian was home early. He rarely came home before eight, and he never came home without calling first.

He didn't have flowers. He didn't offer an apology for the dinner he canceled last Friday. Instead, he stepped into the foyer with a woman behind him.

She was petite, with large doe eyes and dark hair falling over a single leather overnight bag.

"Claire," Killian said. His coat was damp. "This is Amoura Porter. My adopted sister. We fell out of touch years ago, but she needs a place to stay. She’s taking the east-wing suite."

I stood frozen with a linen napkin in my hand. He had never mentioned an adopted sister. Not once in the three years I waited for him, and not once in the year we had been married.

Before I could speak, footfalls clicked on the marble stairs. Victoria, my mother-in-law, swept down. She didn't look surprised at all. She walked right past me and wrapped Amoura in a tight, warm hug.

"You're finally here, sweetheart," Victoria murmured.

In four years, Victoria had never hugged me like that. She barely looked me in the eye.

Amoura pulled back from the hug and looked at Killian. Her gaze didn't look like a sister's gaze. It lingered on his mouth, slow and possessive.

A cold knot formed in my stomach. I swallowed it down. I forced a polite smile and stepped forward.

"Welcome, Amoura," I said. "Let me show you to your room."

Over the next week, the house stopped belonging to me. Everything revolved around Amoura.

Friday was our third anniversary tradition—dinner at Per Se. Killian called me at four in the afternoon.

"Cancel the table," he said flatly. "Amoura has a panic attack. I'm driving her to a therapist in Midtown."

"Killian, it's our anniversary," I said.

"We can eat food anytime, Claire." He hung up.

At night, I heard him in the hallway outside our bedroom. He was on the phone with her, speaking in a low, gentle voice. He had never used that tone with me. Not even when we were dating.

The next morning, I poured his coffee. "Killian, she's taking up a lot of your time. It feels like we don't even talk."

He set his mug down with a sharp clatter. His eyes were cold.

"She's fragile right now," he said. "Don't make this about you."

He grabbed his briefcase and walked out.

I stood in the quiet kitchen. Later that evening, I went to my dressing table, unlocked the bottom drawer, and pulled out an envelope. Inside was my Harvard MBA acceptance letter. I had let it expire three years ago because Killian wanted a supportive wife at home, not a businesswoman running late meetings. I ran my thumb over the embossed seal, locked it back up, and told myself to be patient.

Then came 2:47 a.m. on Wednesday.

My phone buzzed against the nightstand. It was the Manhattan police precinct in Tribeca.

Killian was in a holding cell. He had gotten into a violent bar fight at a downtown lounge.

I threw a wool coat over my silk pajamas and ran outside into the pouring rain. I hailed a yellow cab, paid his bail with my own card, and waited in the fluorescent-lit lobby.

When Killian walked through the double doors, my breath hitched. His knuckles were raw and bloody. His lower lip was split open. But his face held no regret.

"Killian, what happened?" I rushed over. "Are you hurt?"

He pulled his arm away from my touch.

"Some guy touched Amoura at the bar," he muttered. "She needed me."

He didn't ask how I got there. He didn't thank me for the bail. He didn't care that two photographers were already flashing cameras through the precinct glass.

In the cab ride back uptown, the city lights blurred against the wet glass. Killian stared straight ahead in total silence. I looked at the dark silhouette of his jaw, and a single word popped into my mind for the very first time.

*Divorce.*

At breakfast the next morning, my phone lit up with a link from a friend. It was a Manhattan society gossip blog.

The headline read: *Grant CEO's Mystery Companion—Sister or Something More?*

Below it was a clear photo of Killian and Amoura leaving the Tribeca lounge before the fight. They were laughing. Her hand was resting casually on his bicep.

Killian was already locked in his study, taking calls with his PR team.

The sound of soft slippers brushed against the floor. Amoura entered the kitchen, wearing a delicate silk robe that looked far too expensive for an orphan with one overnight bag. She glanced down at my phone screen, saw the photo, and smiled.

It was a tiny, pitying smile.

"Coffee smells good," she said softly, pouring herself a cup.

I laid the phone face-down on the granite counter. My hands were completely steady.

"Help yourself," I said.

That evening, I was scrolling through social media when a new notification caught my eye. A burner account with zero followers had tagged a local food blogger who had photographed me at a Grant Foundation gala last month.

The burner account had only one post.

It was a meme of a woman desperately clinging to a man's coat while he looked away. The caption read: *Some women just don't know when they're not wanted.*

The text went on to mock a woman wearing a camel cashmere coat and a vintage emerald ring—the exact coat I wore yesterday, and the heirloom ring Killian gave me for our engagement.

Only someone living under this roof knew those details.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream.

I took a screenshot, opened my laptop, and created a new hidden folder titled *Records*. Then I saved the image.

It was time to stop being patient.
