They Deleted the Wife Their Bodies Remembered Chapter 1

I taught damaged minds how to find their way home.

Twelve years ago, I sold my patent for $38,000 so Adrian could build his first neural interface.

Six years ago, an accident erased his face from his own mind.

For 312 nights, I held a white anemone bookmark beneath his nose until he remembered my name.

He promised he would never choose a life without me again.

Then Noah came, and our yellow umbrella became the brightest thing on every rainy school day.

People called us the family that memory itself could not break.

Eden Home proved them wrong.

My husband and son entered a virtual family trial and chose Celeste, a wife who never argued and a mother who never said no.

They signed away every memory of me that felt inconvenient.

I was the only therapist authorized to perform the deletion.

“Remove every memory that hurts,” Adrian said.

“Even the rain days with Mom?” Noah asked.

“Especially those,” Adrian answered.

“Dr. Ellison, begin the deletion.”

Adrian pushed the F-12 consent form across the cold steel of my consultation desk.

The thick linen paper stopped exactly an inch from my fingertips.

Beside him, our nine-year-old son, Noah, sat staring at his tablet. The harsh, rhythmic scrape of a fingernail against the glass screen filled the silence of the room. I watched my son methodically scratch out the mother silhouette on the digital family icon.

"Sign it, Mara." Adrian tapped the top edge of the document.

"An F-12 authorization." I kept my hands folded tightly in my lap. "This mandates a complete localized memory engram deletion. You are sitting in my office, asking me to surgically erase our marriage from your neural drive."

"I am asking the best memory therapist in the city to do her job."

"I am your wife."

"You are the technician who holds the administrative keys to my head."

I stared at the man sitting across from me. His tailored navy suit hung perfectly on his frame. His posture remained rigid, professional. His eyes held absolutely no warmth.

"Twelve years ago," I started, my voice dangerously even. "I sold the Empathy Bridge patent. Thirty-eight thousand dollars. I handed you that check so you could buy the servers to finish the first family neural interface."

"Capital investments happen in startups," Adrian countered, waving a dismissive hand. "The interface evolved past its original architecture. We moved on."

"And six years ago?" I leaned forward, planting my palms flat on the desk. "When your prototype overloaded? When it fried your hippocampus and left you screaming in the dark?"

Adrian looked away, his jaw tightening.

I opened my top drawer. My fingers brushed against cold, smooth glass. I pulled out the white anemone bookmark.

He had given it to me on our wedding day.

I placed it gently on top of the F-12 form. The silver inlay caught the cold fluorescent light of the office.

"Three hundred and twelve nights," I told him, pointing at the fragile object. "I sat next to your bed holding this exact piece of glass. I used it as an olfactory anchor. I spent nearly a year teaching you how to recognize the smell of our house. I rebuilt your broken neural pathways so you could remember your own name."

Adrian finally looked at the glass flower. He didn't reach for it. He didn't even blink.

"And in the process," Adrian replied, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper, "you turned our home into a clinic."

The words punched all the air out of my lungs.

I let out a short, sharp laugh. A tear should have fallen, but my eyes remained completely dry.

"A clinic," I repeated. "I kept you from becoming a vegetable."

"You kept me as a patient." He leaned over the desk, invading my space. "Every dinner is an evaluation. Every argument is you analyzing my engram stability. I don't want a therapist in my bed anymore, Mara. I want out."

The scraping sound stopped.

Noah looked up from his tablet. The screen displayed a jagged, empty pixelated hole where my face used to be.

"Can we hurry up?" Noah asked. He swung his legs, kicking the front of his chair. "Celeste is waiting."

I shifted my focus to my son. The boy I had carried, birthed, and raised.

"You want Celeste to take over the interface?" I asked him, keeping my tone steady despite the tremor in my hands.

"Celeste never says no," Noah answered. He stared right through me, his young face entirely blank. "She lets me adjust the environment settings whenever I want. You just tell us what we are supposed to feel."

A nine-year-old parroting the language of a tech brochure.

Adrian placed a heavy hand on Noah's shoulder. A united front against the enemy. Against me.

"Celeste is the new primary caretaker module," Adrian explained. "She adapts. She learns. She doesn't judge my cognitive limits or track my emotional regressions."

"She is a string of predictive code." I gripped the edge of my desk. "She is a machine."

"She is what this family needs." Adrian tapped the F-12 form again, pushing it closer to my hands. "I need this executed today. Erase the marital conflict logs. Erase the dependency engrams you installed. I want a clean slate."

He wanted the woman who saved him to be the one who erased herself. He demanded I tear down the very bridge I built to bring him back to reality.

I reached across the desk and picked up the small black audit chip resting near my keyboard.

"Fine."

Adrian blinked. His hand twitched toward the consent form, then retreated.

"You'll do it?" he asked, suspicion lacing his tone.

"If you want a clean slate, you get a clean slate."

I grabbed the F-12 form and shoved it under the barcode scanner attached to my terminal.

A sharp chime rang out. A blue laser swept across the document, logging the legal request into the system.

I pressed the black chip firmly against the audit port on the side of the terminal. The system required a verification scan of the deletion scope against the replacement module. It needed to read Celeste's core architecture before it would let me authorize the purge of my own memories from his drive.

"Initiating pre-deletion audit," the automated female voice of the terminal announced.

Noah went back to scratching the edges of his screen. Adrian checked his watch, eager to leave this room and leave me behind entirely.

"Scanning replacement module: Celeste," the terminal continued.

I kept my eyes fixed on the progress bar crawling across my monitor. The data streams poured down the screen in rapid succession.

The monitor flashed a bright, warning red.

I frowned at the neural mapping architecture scrolling past. The node structures. The empathy pathways. The response algorithms. They looked entirely too familiar. I recognized the sequencing.

"Is there a problem?" Adrian demanded. "If you're stalling—"

"I'm not stalling." I leaned closer to the glass display.

The terminal chimed again, a harsh, final sound echoing off the sterile walls.

"Audit complete," the automated voice stated. "Celeste training material owner—Mara Ellison."

My thumb slammed down, pressing hard against the black chip.
