Chapter 2

For three days, I barely slept. I moved through the house with quiet, exhausted precision.

I didn't yell. I didn't break things. That was never who I was. Instead, I prepared.

Late at night, while Trevor was asleep, I pulled two large suitcases from the back of the closet. I packed only the essentials—clothes, my birth certificate, old photo albums, and a few warm sweaters. Early the next morning, I loaded them into the trunk of my car. I drove straight to my office and locked them inside the private closet behind my desk.

Next came the money. I opened a new account at a bank three miles out of our usual radius. I transferred a large chunk of my personal savings into it. It was money I had earned. Money Trevor had no visibility into.

Finally, I scheduled a consultation with a top divorce attorney.

The call was set for Thursday at two in the afternoon.

When the hour came, I didn't take the call inside the house. I walked out to the driveway, climbed into my parked sedan, and shut the door. The afternoon sun beat down on the windshield.

Thirty feet away, through the tall glass window of his home office, I could see Trevor. He was sitting at his mahogany desk, leaning back, laughing at something on his laptop. He looked completely untroubled.

I pressed the phone tight against my ear.

"Miller and Vance," a crisp voice answered.

"Hello," I said. My voice was low, flat, and steady. "My name is Violet Wilson. I need to retain counsel for an immediate divorce."

The attorney asked questions about assets, timelines, and grounds. I answered each one with dry, factual sentences. My throat was tight, but I didn't let my voice shake. I didn't cry. By the time I ended the call, my shirt was damp with cold sweat. But beneath the terror, a faint spark flickered in my chest.

I was getting out.

I walked back inside around five. My head was throbbing with a dull ache. In the kitchen, I plugged my phone into the charger on the marble island, then poured myself a glass of water.

The front door clicked open.

Footsteps echoed in the foyer—Trevor’s heavy, measured stride, followed by a lighter, softer step.

I walked out to the hall.

Trevor was standing by the console table. Standing right beside him was Sienna.

She held two matching designer weekend bags. She was wearing a soft cream dress that draped loosely over her frame. Around her neck, the tiny diamond on my stolen necklace caught the chandelier light.

Maria, our housekeeper, walked out from the dining room carrying a stack of fresh towels. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw them.

Trevor didn't look at me. He looked directly at Maria.

"Maria," he said. His voice was smooth and pleasant. "Take Miss Munoz’s bags up to the east guest suite. She will be staying here for the foreseeable future. Given her condition, she needs rest and proper care."

Maria stared at him. Her eyes shifted to me, wide with disbelief. She didn't move.

"Maria," Trevor repeated, his tone dropping just enough to carry an edge. "Now, please."

Maria lowered her eyes, took the bags from Sienna’s hands, and hurried up the stairs without a word.

Sienna turned her gaze on me. She gave me a small, timid smile, tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear.

"Thank you for understanding, Violet," she said softly. Her voice sounded fragile, almost apologetic. But her eyes were bright and sharp. "The doctor said stress isn't good for the baby."

My jaw locked. I dug my thumbnail hard into the meat of my palm. The sharp sting was the only thing keeping me upright.

Trevor walked past her, stepping into the kitchen. He didn't look guilty. He looked like an executive who had just resolved a minor scheduling conflict.

He stopped in front of the island.

His eyes fell on my phone, resting on the white marble.

Slowly, Trevor reached out. He pulled the charging cord free, then picked up the phone.

"Trevor," I said, my voice dangerously tight. "Put that down."

He didn't put it down. Instead, he pulled his own phone from his pocket and tapped the screen twice.

"Sienna noticed you were away from the house a lot this week," Trevor said. He spoke in that calm, measured tone he always used. "She monitors the smart home system. She saw the odd hours."

A cold drop of dread hit my stomach.

"So I decided to pull the logs myself," he continued, holding his screen up toward me. "Two suitcases loaded through the mudroom on Tuesday morning. A six-figure wire transfer to an unlinked account yesterday. And this afternoon? A twenty-minute phone call to a family law firm."

He lowered his phone and shook his head, looking faintly disappointed.

"Did you really think you could sneak behind my back, Violet? In our own home?"

"It's my life, Trevor," I whispered, my knuckles turning white. "And I have the right to leave."

Trevor didn't get angry. He didn't raise his voice. He simply slid my phone into the breast pocket of his tailored jacket.

Then he took a step forward. He reached out and brushed the back of his fingers against my cheek. His skin felt freezing cold.

"You aren't leaving," he said gently. "You've been under a lot of stress lately, Violet. It's making you erratic. You're making foolish decisions."

I flinched away from his touch. "Give me my phone back."

"No," he replied, using the soft, soothing voice one might use on an unruly child. "Some distance from your devices will help you clear your head. Go upstairs. Rest. We’re having dinner together tonight."
