Chapter 3

By Saturday, the house didn’t feel like mine anymore.

It happened in tiny, quiet steps. Sienna never broke anything. She never threw my things in the trash. Instead, she just moved them.

On Saturday morning, I walked into the kitchen to make hot water with lemon. The pantry had been completely reorganized. My favorite Earl Grey was pushed into the dark corners of the top cabinet. In its place sat rows of organic decaf teas, prenatal vitamins, and pregnancy supplements.

I looked over at the counter beside the stove. My handwritten recipe binders were gone. I found them shoved onto the highest shelf above the double oven. I couldn't reach them without dragging over a heavy step stool.

I turned around. Sienna was standing in the doorway in bare feet. She held a mug between both hands.

"Oh, Violet," she said softly. Her voice had that breathy, apologetic tone. "I hope you don’t mind. The doctor said caffeine triggers my nausea. And I needed space for the ginger drops."

"You put my books away," I said. My voice sounded flat, even to my own ears.

"I just wanted the counter clear for meal prep," she said, giving me a tiny, shy smile. "Trevor said you wouldn't mind."

She didn't wait for an answer. She walked past me, brushing my elbow with hers, and called out toward the hall. "Maria? Could you steep the red raspberry leaf tea for six minutes? Not five. Six. Trevor said the timing is very important for the baby’s heart rate."

Maria came out of the laundry room. She looked miserable. Her eyes flicked toward me, then down at the floor. "Right away, Miss Munoz."

Sienna drifted into the living room.

I followed her gaze. The room I had carefully designed over five years was already different. The cashmere throw on the sofa had been replaced by a pale pink baby blanket. The glass coffee table was buried under stacks of glossy parenting books, prenatal yoga guides, and a framed ultrasound scan set neatly next to the remote control.

She wasn't visiting. She was nesting.

That evening, I sat alone at the dining table. I had no phone. I had no laptop. The house phone was unplugged, its cord gone from the wall. I sat with my hands folded in my lap, staring at the grain of the dark wood.

Heavy footsteps came down the hall. Trevor walked into the kitchen to pour himself a glass of scotch.

A second later, Sienna appeared.

She wore one of Trevor’s oversized white dress shirts. The hem fell to her mid-thigh. Around her neck, the diamond on my stolen necklace caught the bright pendant light over the island.

She stopped Trevor right in the open doorway. It was perfectly positioned in my line of sight.

"Trev," she murmured.

Trevor paused, glass in hand.

Sienna didn't speak again right away. She reached out with both hands, took Trevor’s free hand, and pulled it down to her belly. It was still mostly flat, but she pressed his palm against her stomach with deliberate, reverent pressure.

"He's kicking," she whispered. Her voice was just loud enough to carry across the open floor plan. "Or maybe she is."

Trevor didn't pull away.

His shoulders dropped. The tense, sharp edge on his face melted away completely. A soft, warm smile spread across his lips—a smile I hadn't seen him give me in five years. He rested his hand there, stroking his thumb gently over the cotton of his own shirt.

"Really?" he asked, his voice low and tender. "Already?"

"Mhm," she hummed. She leaned her head against his shoulder.

Over his back, Sienna’s eyes shifted.

She looked straight across the dining room, locking her gaze onto mine. Her face didn't look shy now. There was no softness in her dark eyes. Just a cold, steady calculation.

She didn't just want his money. She was erasing me from the board, square by square.

The next morning, the house was dead silent.

It was barely six. Gray dawn light crept through the horizontal blinds in the kitchen. Sienna was still upstairs, sleeping off her morning sickness.

Trevor was sitting alone at the breakfast nook. A mug of black coffee sat in front of him. His tablet was propped against the sugar bowl.

I walked in and pulled out the chair across from him. The legs scraped lightly against the hardwood.

Trevor didn't look up from his screen. He swiped through an email. "If this is about your phone, Violet, we talked about this. You'll get it back once you calm down and accept the situation."

"Trevor," I said.

My voice was quiet. It wasn't angry. It was just tired. Bone tired.

He didn't answer, but his fingers paused on the glass screen.

"Did any of it mean anything?" I asked.

He picked up his silver spoon and began stirring his coffee. Clink. Clink. Clink. The metal hit the porcelain in a steady, irritating rhythm.

"What are you talking about?" he muttered, still looking at the table.

"Ten years," I whispered. My chest ached with every breath. "The lake. Dragging you out of the black water with my bare hands. Freezing until my organs stopped working. Building this life together. Did you ever love me? Or was I just convenient?"

Trevor stopped stirring. He let out a long, heavy sigh, like I was an employee bothering him during his lunch break.

He looked up. His eyes were cold, completely untouched by guilt.

"You're catastrophizing, Violet," he said smoothly. "You always do this. You turn everything into a tragedy."

"She is wearing my necklace, Trevor. She's sleeping in our house."

"And she is carrying my child," he replied, his tone hard and final. "Nobody is throwing you out. You have your status. You have this house. You're just making yourself the victim because your pride is hurt. Now stop making a scene."

I stared at him. Really stared at the man I had nearly died for.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry.

I looked down at my lap, dug my thumb hard into the center of my palm until the skin went white, and said nothing more.
