My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Daughter Novel Cover

My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Daughter

From my bench in the Southern District of New York, I stare down at Celeste Garza—cream-clad, head bowed, the woman my husband Gabriel has loved in secret for years. The child her luxury SUV struck was our five-year-old, Rosalina. My robes conceal a mother's trembling; the gallery sees only a judge. None suspect the defendant is family, or that Gabriel chose his mistress over our daughter. Gripping the mahogany, I brace for what comes next.

Chapter 3

Three days after the funeral, the house was dead quiet.

Gabriel hadn't come home. His driver had come by once to pick up clean suits, but Gabriel stayed in the city. He was probably with Celeste. He was probably tucking Angelo into bed and checking the boy’s forehead for another imaginary fever.

I didn't care anymore.

It was two o’clock in the morning. I sat at the heavy desk in my home office. A single brass lamp cut a circle of yellow light across the dark wood.

I opened my laptop and logged into the New York hospital network. As a federal judge, I had clearance to pull sealed medical archives for active inquiries.

My hands didn't shake. My fingers were cold, but steady.

I typed in Ophelia Montgomery’s name first.

Five years ago, Ophelia had nearly died of acute myeloid leukemia. She needed an immediate bone marrow transplant. The doctors said she had weeks left.

I pulled up Ophelia’s old hematology chart. Her blood type was B-negative. Her human leukocyte antigen markers were rare and specific.

Next, I pulled Celeste Garza’s records from when she gave birth to Angelo.

Celeste was A-positive. Her antibody panel was completely incompatible with Ophelia's system. If doctors had put Celeste’s marrow into Ophelia’s veins, Ophelia would have died in hours from graft failure.

It was a biological impossibility.

A tight knot formed in my throat.

I clicked into the donor registry from that same week five years ago. I scrolled down to the confidential donor log.

There was my name. *Julianna Stewart.*

I stared at the screen.

I remembered that week so clearly. I remembered the giant needle driving deep into the back of my pelvic bone. I remembered waking up from the general anesthesia, dizzy and shivering, throwing up into a plastic tub. The doctor had warned me that my blood pressure was dangerously low.

Gabriel had told me to stay in a quiet clinic across town. He had told me to rest.

*“My mother is stressed, Julianna,”* he had said back then. *“She can’t handle drama right now. I’ll tell her when she’s stronger.”*

I had believed him.

When I finally went to the Montgomery estate two weeks later, limping and pale, the family was gathered on the terrace. Ophelia was wearing silk. She had a diamond bracelet around Celeste’s wrist.

Ophelia had kissed Celeste’s cheeks with tears in her eyes. *“My sweet girl,”* Ophelia had wept. *“You saved my life. You are the true daughter of this house.”*

Celeste had blushed and smiled softly. *“I only did what any loving daughter would do, Mother.”*

I had stood in the doorway, bleeding through my compression bandages under my clothes. Gabriel had caught my eye. He had given me a quick, warning shake of his head.

*Don’t ruin this for her,* his look had said.

I sat back in my desk chair now. The room was freezing.

Celeste had never gone under the needle. Celeste had never lost a drop of blood. She had simply walked into the recovery room and stolen the credit. And Ophelia had spent five years treating Celeste like a saint while treating me like dirt on her shoe.

Not a single sacrifice I made was ever real to them.

I closed the medical tab.

My chest felt hollow, like an empty drum. But I wasn't finished.

I clicked over to the New York State Unified Court System portal. I entered my judicial ID and opened the private family court registry.

I typed in: *Montgomery, Gabriel.*

Two records came up. One was our marriage license from six years ago.

The other was a civil decree.

I clicked the link. A PDF file opened.

My breath caught in my throat.

At the top of the page, in bold black letters, it read: **FINAL DECREE OF DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.**

I scrolled down to the date.

October 14th.

Three years ago.

That was the exact day Gabriel’s older brother, Devin, died in the car crash.

I stared at the electronic seal. I stared at the signature line.

My name was there. It was signed with a legal power of attorney.

A memory hit me like a slap across the face. Three years ago, on the night Devin died, Gabriel had brought me a thick stack of papers in the study. He was pale and shaking with grief. He had pressed a pen into my hand.

*“It’s for the estate planning,”* he had whispered, his voice cracked. *“Devin’s death changes the trusts. I need full authorization to protect the family assets. Please, Julianna. Do this for me.”*

I had loved him so much. I had wanted to take away his pain. I had signed every page without reading a single word.

He hadn't protected the family.

He had divorced me.

On the very day Celeste became a widow, Gabriel had legally erased me from his life.

I read the decree once.

I read it a second time.

Then a third. And a fourth.

Every word was clear. Every clause was final.

For three years, I had washed his clothes. For three years, I had cooked his meals, kept his secrets, and endured his mother’s vicious insults. For three years, I had bowed my head and begged for his love.

I had given him my bone marrow.

I had given him my daughter.

I had thrown my judicial oath into the dirt to save the woman who killed my child.

And all along, I was nothing.

I was not his wife. I was just a ghost haunting a house that had thrown me out three years ago.

I didn't cry.

I gently closed the laptop. The room went pitch black, except for the pale moonlight creeping through the blinds.

I sat alone in the dark.

My heart didn't hurt anymore. The pain was gone.

There was only a deep, freezing rage. And it was pure as ice.
