Chapter 2

Lacey invited me to dinner at a quiet, three-star Michelin restaurant on the Upper East Side. She called it a peace offering.

“We got off on the wrong foot, Maisy,” she said across the white tablecloth. She wore a soft cream sweater and a gentle smile. “Let me order for us. The chef does this incredible tasting menu.”

I didn’t want to be there, but Rhys had insisted. *“Be gracious,”* he had told me that morning. *“Don't embarrass me.”*

The third course was a delicate duck breast glazed in a dark sauce. I took one bite.

A sharp tingle hit the back of my throat. Then came the heat.

I dropped my fork. It clattered against the fine china. My airway squeezed shut like a fist tightening around my windpipe. I gasped, but no air came in.

Lacey knew about my severe tree nut allergy. We had shared dorm rooms for two years. She had watched me carry an EpiPen in my purse every single day.

“Maisy? Oh my god, what's wrong?” Lacey cried, her voice ringing out across the quiet dining room. She stood up, knocking her water glass over. “Somebody help! I think she’s choking!”

Dark spots danced in my vision. The Grant family driver rushed in from the curb, scooping me up before I hit the floor.

The hospital was a blur of fluorescent lights, an injection of epinephrine, and the cold hiss of an oxygen mask.

Rhys didn’t arrive until midnight, three hours later.

When the curtain around my cubicle was pulled back, Lacey was clinging to his arm. Her mascara was smudged, her cheeks wet with tears.

“I had absolutely no idea, Rhys!” she sobbed into his shoulder. “I just told the waiter to bring the house special. I feel so horrible!”

Rhys patted her back. His face was tense, but his eyes were soft as he looked at her. Then he turned to look at me. His expression went instantly cold.

“You have the allergy, Maisy,” he said, his voice flat and annoyed. “You know what you can and can't eat. You should have checked with the staff yourself instead of causing a public scene.”

I sat propped up in the thin hospital bed, the plastic IV needle stinging my vein. I didn’t answer.

Rhys took Lacey by the elbow. “Come on. Let’s get you home. You’re shaking.”

They walked out together. The curtain fluttered shut.

I stared up at the speckled acoustic ceiling tiles. The steady beep of the heart monitor filled the silence. Inside my chest, the last lingering trace of love went completely cold.

Four days later, Hugo Grant sent us all to the family estate in Connecticut for the weekend.

The autumn air was crisp. The stable manager had three horses saddled near the white paddock fence.

“Let’s ride down to the lake,” Lacey suggested, looking radiant in tailored riding boots. She walked over to the chestnut mare. “Maisy, you take Duchess. She’s the calmest horse here.”

I approached the mare. The horse shifted nervously, her ears pinned flat against her skull. I put my foot in the stirrup and swung my leg over.

The second my full weight hit the saddle, Duchess let out a wild, shrill scream.

She reared straight up on her hind legs. The reins slipped through my fingers. The world tilted violently, and the hard, frozen earth rushed up to meet me.

*Crack.*

A burst of white-hot agony flared in my left arm. My breath knocked out of my lungs.

I lay in the dirt, clutching my swollen, bent wrist.

Lacey gasped, covering her mouth, and fled toward the main house screaming for Rhys.

Twenty minutes later, I sat alone on a stool in the massive estate kitchen. My forehead was drenched in cold sweat. I held a bag of frozen peas against my fractured wrist. Through the open French doors leading into the parlor, I could see Rhys sitting close to Lacey on the sofa. He was holding a cup of warm tea to her lips, murmuring low, soothing words as she wept over the “shock” of seeing me fall.

Rhys finally stepped into the kitchen to grab an ice pack from the freezer.

“Someone put a burr under the saddle blanket,” I said, biting through the pain. My voice shook, but I looked right at him. “Duchess didn't just spook. She was agitated on purpose.”

Rhys paused. He shut the freezer door with a sharp click. His eyes narrowed.

“You've always been clumsy, Maisy,” he cut me off, cold and disgusted. “Stop looking for someone else to blame for your own mistakes.”

He turned around and walked back to the parlor without another word.

I didn’t argue. I didn’t yell.

I found a roll of elastic bandage in the pantry first-aid kit. Using my right hand and my teeth, I wrapped my swollen wrist tight until the throbbing dullness settled in.

Late that night, while the house slept, I opened my private leather journal.

I wrote down the date. The restaurant. The dish. The horse. And the exact words Rhys had spoken to me.

At two in the morning, the burner phone beneath my mattress vibrated.

A notification from Leif Shaw popped up on the encrypted screen.

*Files decrypted. Review immediately.*

I swiped the screen open with my good hand.

Documents, bank transactions, and corporate filings scrolled past my eyes. Lacey Phillips wasn’t the innocent, middle-class girl she pretended to be. Her private college tuition hadn’t come from family savings; it had been paid through an offshore shell company registered in Panama.

A shell company directly linked to Desmond Burke.

Her entire life, her meeting with me in college, her sweet smile—it had all been manufactured. She had been planted beside me years ago, an operative working for Rhys’s deadliest rival.

I took a deep, steady breath.

My fingers didn't shake as I typed back to Leif: *Send the full package to Ford’s private server. Keep our extraction window open.*

Leif replied within seconds: *Ford has it. He’s counting down the days. Are you holding up, Maisy?*

*I'm fine,* I wrote. *I'm ready to disappear.*

I locked the phone and slid it back into its hiding spot. Then I picked up my pen again, recording the account numbers and names into the back pages of my notebook.

Every cut. Every lie. Every betrayal.

I kept the ledger clean and precise. When the end came, I wanted the truth to remain behind—carved so deep that even Rhys Grant could never look away from the wreckage he had made.
