Chapter 3

The acceptance email arrived at dawn.

I sat on the edge of the guest bed and read the words three times. *Full scholarship. Royal Academy of Music, London.*

A quiet warmth spread through my ribs. For years, I had played the piano late at night with the practice pedal pressed down, keeping the sound soft so Rhys wouldn’t complain about the noise. Now, the music was going to buy my freedom.

I opened the encrypted app on my burner phone.

*It’s official,* I typed to Leif. *Send the transcripts.*

*Already done,* Leif replied. *Columbia mailed certified copies directly to our London office yesterday. Your student file is secure.*

An hour later, a courier knocked on the service entrance of the building. The package was small and wrapped in brown paper. Inside was a crisp, dark blue passport.

I ran my thumb across the gold lettering. *Maisy Crawford.*

Not a ghost. Not an unlisted dependent in the Grant family registry. A real person.

I took a needle and black thread from my sewing kit. Sitting by the window, I slid the passport into the inner lining of my heavy wool coat and stitched the seam shut with tiny, invisible loops.

That afternoon, I told the doorman I was going for a walk. I took the subway out to Brooklyn and paid cash for a small storage locker near the shipyard. Inside went a single duffel bag. Three sets of clothes, comfortable sneakers, cash Leif had sent, and the copies of my medical records.

The exit route was mapped. The door was unlocked. All I had to do was wait for the right moment to step through it.

Two nights later, Hugo Grant came to the penthouse for dinner.

It was Lacey’s first time officially sitting at the family table. She wore a modest pastel pink dress and pearls. She sat to Rhys’s right. I was placed at the far end of the long mahogany table, near the swinging door to the kitchen.

Hugo was in high spirits. His laughter was dry and loud.

“The Phillips alliance is already opening doors in Albany,” Hugo said, cutting into his roasted lamb. He smiled at Lacey. “Your father spoke to the governor’s office this morning. The charity gala next month will be under your name, Lacey. We need the city to see your face.”

“Thank you, Grandfather,” Lacey said sweetly, lowering her eyelashes. “I only want to make Rhys proud.”

Rhys reached over and rested his hand over hers on the white tablecloth. “She’s a natural at this,” he told Hugo.

I ate quietly. The silver fork felt heavy in my fingers.

Throughout the entire hour, Hugo did not look at me once. He didn’t ask about my health. He didn’t ask how my broken wrist was healing. To him, the chair I sat on was empty.

I looked at Rhys.

His face was relaxed. He laughed at his grandfather’s jokes. He filled Lacey’s wine glass. He didn't notice that Hugo ignored me. He didn't even notice that I hadn't spoken a single syllable since we sat down. In Rhys's eyes, this was normal. I was just furniture. A permanent, silent fixture that didn't need to be acknowledged.

Under the tablecloth, my left hand began to tremble. My right thumb moved by habit, pressing hard against the inside of my wrist. The sharp ache shot up my arm.

I looked down at my white knuckle.

*Stop,* I told myself.

I released the pressure. I folded my hands flat on my lap. I wouldn’t need to hurt myself to stay quiet much longer.

The following Friday, Rhys and Lacey hosted their official engagement party at the penthouse.

By eight o’clock, the living room below was packed with Manhattan’s elite. Bankers, politicians, and socialites filled the air with loud chatter and the clink of crystal champagne flutes.

Rhys had given me clear instructions that morning before his tailor arrived. *“Stay on the third floor tonight. It’s an important crowd, Maisy. Don't wander down.”*

I had no desire to join them.

Around nine, the noise became a dull roar. The air inside my small bedroom felt stale, so I stepped out into the hallway. I sat on a low velvet bench tucked into a dim alcove near the stairs, holding a copy of a novel I had read three times.

Footsteps came up the carpeted steps.

A middle-aged man in a tuxedo reached the landing, holding a fresh scotch. He looked lost. When he turned the corner, he stopped and blinked at me.

“Oh,” the man said, chuckling. “I was looking for the terrace. Didn't realize there were guests hiding up here.”

Before I could answer, Rhys appeared at the top of the stairs, followed closely by Lacey. Rhys’s jacket was unbuttoned, his tie slightly loose.

The man turned to Rhys with a friendly smile. “Julian was telling me about your art collection upstairs. By the way, Rhys, who is this lovely young lady?” He pointed a glass toward me.

Rhys stopped. His eyes found mine in the dim light of the alcove.

For a fraction of a second, something flickered behind his cold gaze. A tiny pause.

Then his shoulders smoothed out. He smiled with easy, polished grace.

“She’s no one you need to meet,” Rhys said smoothly.

Beside him, Lacey reached out and touched Rhys’s forearm, offering the guest a dazzling smile. “Come on, Arthur. The terrace is actually down the east hall. Let me introduce you to the senator’s wife.”

“Of course, Lacey. Lead the way,” the man laughed.

They turned their backs and walked down the hall together. Their voices faded into the hum of the party below.

I sat in

the shadows.

I looked down at the paper pages in my lap. Slowly, deliberately, I closed the book with a soft snap.

My pulse didn't race. My eyes didn't sting. There was no lump in my throat, no anger, no grief.

Just complete, hollow silence.

I stood up and smoothed my skirt. That was how I knew.

I was finally ready.
