Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Metropolitan Museum of Art cast sharp, glittering shadows across the floor. Around me, Manhattan’s elite laughed and sipped champagne.

I stood by a marble pillar, smoothing the skirt of my navy silk gown. I had picked it carefully. Rhys had bought it for me, but he hadn't spoken more than five words to me all evening. Still, a foolish part of my heart had hoped tonight would be different. For ten years, I had lived in his shadow. For five years, I wore the gold ring he gave me. I thought tonight, at this charity gala, he might finally stand beside me and introduce me as his wife.

Then the room went quiet.

Rhys walked to the center of the hall. He was tall, striking, and cold in a tailored black tuxedo. Beside him stood Lacey Phillips, my closest friend from college. Her blonde hair fell in soft curls over a champagne dress.

Rhys didn't look at me. He looked down at Lacey. Slowly, gracefully, he sank to one knee.

He pulled a velvet box from his pocket. A massive diamond caught the chandelier light.

"Lacey," his voice carried through the quiet hall, deep and commanding. "Will you marry me?"

Lacey gasped. Tears sprang to her eyes, perfectly timed. "Yes! Oh, Rhys, yes!"

The room erupted into wild applause. People cheered. Glasses clinked.

I stood frozen. My champagne flute rattled against my fingers.

The marriage certificate Rhys had shown me years ago, locked in his safe at home. The quiet promises whispered in the dark. It was all fake. A forged document to keep me obedient. A sham to satisfy his grandfather Hugo’s demands without giving me a real name. I was never his wife. I was just a hidden fixture in his house. And now, I was being replaced.

In the back of the town car, the city lights blurred against the wet glass.

Rhys sat across from me, loosening his silk bowtie. He didn't look guilty. He didn't even look tired.

"Were we ever married, Rhys?" I asked. My voice sounded thin, but I kept my eyes locked on his face.

He didn't flinch. "Lacey is an alliance. The Phillips family brings strategic value to the Grant empire. You know how my grandfather operates."

"That wasn't my question." My fingers curled into my palms. "Is our marriage real?"

He let out a short, cold breath. "You're overreacting, Maisy. This changes nothing about our situation. You will still have the penthouse. You will still have everything you need. Don't make a scene out of business."

"Answer me."

Rhys looked out the window, his jaw tight. Silence filled the car.

That silence was my answer.

When the car stopped at the Grant penthouse, I walked inside alone. I went to the bathroom, locked the door, and sank against the wall. My hands were shaking. I pressed my right thumb hard against the inside of my left wrist until the skin turned bone-white. The sharp ache grounded me.

I pulled out my burner phone. Opening the encrypted app, I saw the blank chat with Ford Crawford—my biological brother, the brother I had lost so long ago.

My fingers didn't shake when I typed the two words:

*I'm ready.*

Two days later, Hugo Grant’s assistant arrived at the door.

He carried a leather folder and didn't step past the foyer. "Miss Crawford. Mr. Hugo Grant has instructed that you relocate your belongings to the third-floor guest suite. Miss Phillips will be staying in the master suite starting this weekend."

He handed me the keycard. He didn't offer an apology, and I didn't ask for one.

I went into the master bedroom. I packed one small suitcase. I left the expensive jewelry, the designer coats, and the gold band Rhys had given me on the vanity table. I took only what was truly mine: my private journal, my Columbia University honors degree, and the acceptance letter from the Royal Academy of Music in London.

I shut the heavy bedroom door behind me. I didn't look back.

Lacey moved into the penthouse like she had always owned it. She attended board dinners and society galas on Rhys’s arm, stepping into the light I was never allowed to touch.

The next evening, I went down to the kitchen to pour a glass of water. Lacey was already there, leaning against the marble counter in an emerald silk robe.

"Maisy," she said softly, her face painted with sweet concern. "I feel awful about all of this. You know I never meant to hurt you, right?"

"It’s fine, Lacey," I said, keeping my tone flat.

She took a step closer, tilting her head. "You've been so quiet lately. Rhys said you barely come out of your room. Are you planning on visiting someone? You were on your phone earlier for hours. You aren't seeing anyone... dangerous, are you?"

She was fishing. Her eyes were sharp beneath the gentle smile. She wanted to know about my contacts. She wanted to know about Ford.

"I'm just tired," I replied, setting my glass down. "I have some studying to catch up on."

"Good," Lacey murmured, touching my arm lightly. Her fingers felt like ice. "Because Rhys worries. You know how protective he gets."

I walked back up to the guest room, my heart beating fast.

Lacey wasn't just a social climber. She was digging.

I locked the door and opened the secure channel to Leif Shaw, Ford's trusted partner.

*We need to move faster,* I typed. *And I need a full background check on Lacey Phillips. Something isn't right.*

Seconds later, Leif’s reply flashed on the screen:

*Understood. We are ready whenever you are. Be careful, Maisy.*
