Chapter 3

The offer letter came at 8:14 on a Thursday morning.

I was still in bed when my phone lit up. Dr. Holt's name. I sat up, read it twice, then a third time — not because I didn't understand it, but because I wanted to feel each word land separately.

*Associate Professor of Chemistry. Full course load. Office 214, reinstated effective the first of next month.*

I typed my acceptance in eleven words and hit send.

Then I got up, went downstairs, and made Ronan's breakfast.

Eggs over easy. Wheat toast, no butter. Coffee at exactly the temperature he preferred, which I had learned sometime in the first month and had not once forgotten in three years. I set the plate in front of his empty chair and stood at the counter and looked at the kitchen — the clean tile, the copper pot I'd bought at a market on our second anniversary, the window above the sink that let in gray Seattle light every morning — and I thought: *I am already gone from here. I am just waiting for my body to follow.*

I felt very calm.

---

Lauren had been planning the dinner party for two weeks.

Six of Ronan's business associates. Partners, spouses, the kind of people who arrived with good wine and left with better stories. She'd handled the invitations herself, consulted with Ronan about the seating arrangement, and spent Thursday afternoon in the kitchen with her sleeves rolled up, tasting sauces and rearranging the centerpiece twice.

I set the table.

By seven o'clock the house was full of voices and the particular warmth of a room where everyone knows each other except you. I moved through it quietly — refilling glasses, carrying plates, answering the occasional question directed at me with the kind of smile that doesn't require anything behind it.

Lauren moved differently. She touched Ronan's arm when she laughed. She remembered everyone's names and their children's names and asked follow-up questions that made people feel seen. At one point she caught my eye across the table and gave me a small, apologetic look — the kind that said *I hope you don't mind* — and I looked back at her and said nothing.

I was already thinking about my syllabus.

---

The fire started at 9:40.

I'd gone to the kitchen to bring out the last of the bread. The guests were still at the table, voices layered over each other, someone laughing at something Ronan had said. I pushed open the kitchen door and smelled it before I saw it — that particular sharp sweetness of something burning that isn't food.

The cloth was already going. It was one of Lauren's linen dish towels, the expensive ones she'd brought from her apartment, and it had been folded and left directly beside the back burner. The burner I had turned off. The burner that was now on.

The curtain above the stove caught next. Fast — faster than I expected, the flame climbing the fabric in a clean, bright line.

I grabbed the pan lid off the drying rack. I moved to the stove.

Behind me, the kitchen door swung open. I heard the voices from the dining room rush in for a moment — then Lauren's voice, sharp and frightened: *"Ronan — the kitchen —"*

I turned. Ronan was already through the door. His eyes went to Lauren first, then to the fire, then — briefly, for less than a second — to me.

He crossed the kitchen in three steps. His arm went around Lauren's shoulders and he turned her toward the doorway, his body between her and the smoke.

I pressed the lid down over the burner. The flame smothered, then the cloth went next, and I was reaching for the curtain when I heard it.

The click.

Not loud. Just a small, mechanical sound. The kind a latch makes when it catches.

I turned.

The door was closed.

I stood there for one second. The smoke was already thickening — not from the burner, which was out, but from the curtain still smoldering at the edge, and from something else, something I couldn't see, somewhere behind the stove. A smell that wasn't quite smoke. Heavier. Colorless.

I dropped to the floor.

The air was cleaner at the tile. I pressed my cheek to it and breathed in shallow pulls and started to crawl toward the window. Four feet. Maybe five. The window latch was the old kind — you had to lift and twist at the same time.

I got two feet.

The room tilted sideways in a way that had nothing to do with the floor.

I put my hand out to catch myself and my arm didn't work the way I told it to.

I thought, very clearly, one last clear thought before the gray came in from the edges: *I submitted the application. I accepted the offer. I was already gone.*

The tile was cold against my face.

Then it wasn't anything at all.
