Chapter 4

I came back to myself in pieces.

First the sound — a steady beeping, close and mechanical. Then the smell. Antiseptic and something underneath it, stale and recycled. Then the light, white and flat, pressing against my closed eyelids.

I was in a bed. There were rails on the sides. A tube ran into my left hand.

Hospital.

I lay still and let that settle. My throat felt scraped raw. My chest ached with every breath, a deep, dragging ache, like something had been wrung out and put back wrong. I turned my head and looked at the window. Dark outside. Night, then. Or early morning.

I was alone.

I closed my eyes and thought about the kitchen floor. The tile cold against my cheek. The way my arm had stopped working. The click of the latch.

The click of the latch.

I opened my eyes.

---

She came in quietly.

I heard the door, then footsteps, then nothing. I turned my head.

Lauren stood at the foot of my bed. Gray coat. Hair loose. Her face arranged into something soft and regretful, the expression she wore when she wanted you to feel sorry for her before she'd done anything yet.

She looked at me for a moment. Then her eyes moved to the supply tray by the door — the one a nurse had left behind, instruments still laid out in a row.

I watched her pick up the scalpel.

I tried to sit up. My arms shook. The IV line pulled tight.

"Lauren —"

She drew it across her own forearm without flinching. Clean. Practiced. Like she'd thought about the angle.

The blood came fast.

She dropped to the floor near the door and started to cry. Not quietly. The kind of crying that carries through walls.

I stared at her from the bed. My hands were gripping the rail so hard I could feel my pulse in my fingers.

The door opened. A nurse, then another. Then voices in the hallway, urgent and overlapping.

Lauren looked up from the floor with wet eyes and said, in a voice that broke exactly where it needed to: "She just — I came in to check on her and she grabbed it, I didn't — I couldn't stop her —"

I said, "That's not —"

But the nurses were already moving toward Lauren, and the door was already swinging shut between me and the hallway, and I could hear Ronan's voice somewhere out there, getting louder, and I knew — I already knew — that he was not going to come through that door.

He didn't.

---

Two orderlies came for me an hour later.

I was still in the hospital gown. Still had the IV line, until one of them removed it with the brisk efficiency of someone completing a task, not treating a person. They told me I was being moved. They didn't say where.

I asked.

Neither of them answered.

The elevator went down. Basement level. The doors opened onto a corridor I hadn't seen before — concrete walls, fluorescent tubes, the temperature dropping with every step. One of the orderlies had a keycard. He used it on a heavy door at the end of the hall.

The smell hit me before the lights came on. Cold air and something beneath it, chemical and final.

The lights flickered on in rows.

Stainless steel drawers. Twelve of them, maybe more. A metal table in the center. A drain in the floor.

The door closed behind me.

The lock engaged.

I stood very still in the middle of the room and breathed through my mouth and told myself — very quietly, very precisely, the way you talk to yourself when panic is already at the edges — that the air was not running out. That the walls were not moving. That I had survived a parking garage in an earthquake and a kitchen filling with carbon monoxide and I could survive a locked room.

I believed myself for about four minutes.

Then the lights flickered.

I screamed. I screamed until my voice gave out, until my throat was just raw sound and then no sound at all. I hit the door with both palms. I called Ronan's name. I called for anyone.

No one came.

I slid down to the floor with my back against the door and pulled my knees to my chest and sat in the cold and the silence and the dark between the flickers and I waited.

I don't know how many hours passed.

At some point I stopped shaking. Not because I was warm. Because there was nothing left to shake out of me.

I thought about the offer letter on my phone. *Associate Professor of Chemistry. Office 214.* Eleven words I had typed back without hesitating.

I thought about the application I'd submitted at 11:23 p.m. at the kitchen table while they slept.

I had already decided. I had already left. I just hadn't said it out loud yet.

When the door finally opened — gray light flooding in, an orderly's face, morning somewhere above us — I stood up. My legs held.

I looked at the man in the doorway.

"I want a divorce," I said.

My voice was steady. Quiet. The kind of quiet that doesn't need volume because it has already decided everything.

I walked past him into the corridor.

I did not look back at the room.
