Chapter 2

She arrived on a Thursday.

Two suitcases. A soft gray coat. Eyes that were slightly red, like she'd been crying in the car and hadn't quite finished.

I was in the kitchen when the doorbell rang. I heard Ronan's footsteps in the hall, then the door, then Lauren's voice — low and apologetic and carefully helpless. "I'm so sorry to just show up like this. My landlord changed the locks. I didn't know who else to call."

I stood at the stove and listened to him tell her it was fine. That she should come in. That the guest room was made up.

He didn't come to the kitchen to tell me.

I found out because I walked into the living room twenty minutes later and she was already on the couch, shoes off, hands wrapped around a mug of tea she had apparently made herself. She looked up at me with an expression that managed to be both grateful and slightly sad, like she was sorry for the inconvenience of existing.

"Vivian," she said. "I really hope this is okay."

"Of course," I said.

I went back to the kitchen and turned the burner down.

---

By the end of the first week, she had rearranged the household without touching a single thing.

She made breakfast. Not every morning — that would have been too obvious. Just the mornings when Ronan came downstairs looking tired, when she could set a plate in front of him before I'd finished my coffee. Eggs the way he liked them, which I had learned in month two of our marriage and which she seemed to have always known.

She helped Clay with his history paper on a Tuesday night. I'd offered that morning. He'd said he was fine. By eight o'clock he was at the kitchen island with Lauren, and she was reading his draft out loud in a voice that made it sound like the most interesting thing she'd ever encountered.

I sat in the living room with a book I wasn't reading.

Ronan came in around nine, looked at the two of them at the island, and something in his face did a thing I recognized — a small, quiet softening, the kind I hadn't seen directed at me in a long time.

"She's good with him," he said. Not to me, exactly. Just into the room.

I turned a page.

---

My interview with Dr. Holt was on Wednesday at two.

The chemistry building smelled like it always had — reagent and recycled air and something faintly metallic. I walked through the main corridor and felt my shoulders drop half an inch, like my body remembered how to exist here even when I'd forgotten.

Holt's office was tidy and deliberately neutral. She was a precise woman — late fifties, reading glasses pushed up on her head, a way of looking at you that was more assessment than welcome.

She offered me a seat. She folded her hands on the desk.

"You've been away from active research for a significant period," she said. Careful. Polite. The kind of sentence that means something else. "I want to be direct with you, Dr. Ellis. We'd need to be confident you can manage a full course load. The department's had some difficulties with —"

"I have something for you," I said.

I reached into my bag and pulled out the manuscript. Forty-one pages, printed that morning, paper-clipped at the corner. I set it on her desk.

She looked at it. Then at me.

Then she picked it up.

The office was very quiet. I watched her read the first page. Then the second. Her expression didn't change, exactly — but something in it settled, the way a room settles when the right person walks in.

She looked up after the third page. "I'll be in touch by Friday."

"Thank you," I said.

I stood, shook her hand, and walked back out through the corridor that smelled like reagent and recycled air. I didn't let myself smile until I reached the parking lot.

---

The argument with Clay happened on Friday night.

It was small, the way the worst ones always are. He wanted the pasta Lauren had made the night before. I told him there wasn't any left. He said I should have saved some. I said I didn't know he wanted it.

"You never know anything," he said.

Lauren was at the kitchen island. She didn't look up from her phone.

"Clay —" I started.

"You're not even a real part of this family." He said it the way teenagers say things they've been told — with a confidence that isn't quite their own yet. "You never have been."

The kitchen was very still.

I looked at him. Fifteen years old, jaw set, waiting to see what I'd do with it.

Then I looked at Lauren.

She set her phone down. Looked at Clay with soft, sympathetic eyes. "Hey," she said gently. "Do you want me to make something else? I think there's still some of that bread."

She smiled at him.

She didn't look at me at all.

I turned and walked out of the kitchen. Behind me, I heard the refrigerator open. I heard Lauren's voice, warm and easy, asking Clay what he felt like eating.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was an email from Dr. Holt.

*Dr. Ellis — please come in Monday morning. We'd like to discuss your start date.*

I read it twice in the hallway, standing very still, while the sounds of the kitchen carried through the wall behind me.

I put my phone away.

I went upstairs.

I did not tell anyone.
