Chapter 1

The ground moved at 2:47 in the afternoon.

I was on level three of the Westlake parking structure, grocery bags in both hands, when the first wave hit. The concrete groaned like something alive. A car alarm screamed, then another, then every alarm in the building at once. I dropped the bags. Oranges rolled under a minivan. I didn't watch them go.

I called Ronan.

The ceiling cracked above me — a sound like a gunshot, then a low, grinding moan. Dust rained down in sheets. I pressed myself against the nearest pillar and listened to his phone ring once, twice, and then his voice, flat and unhurried: "Yeah."

"Ronan." My voice came out wrong. Too high. "There's an earthquake. I'm in the parking garage on Westlake and the ceiling is — it's coming apart, I can hear it, I don't know if I should run or —"

"You're fine," he said. "It's just tremors."

Another crack. A chunk of concrete the size of a dinner plate hit the ground six feet from where I stood.

"Ronan, it's not tremors, it's —"

"Vivian." His voice had that particular edge, the one that meant I was being irrational. "Figure it out."

The line went dead.

I stood there for one full second, phone in my hand, the building shaking around me. Then I moved. I found a low overhang between two concrete support pillars, dropped to my knees, and crawled under it. I pulled my arms over my head. I made myself very small.

The earthquake lasted forty-seven seconds. I know because I counted.

---

I got home just after five.

My coat had a long tear across the left shoulder where I'd caught it on a broken railing. My hands were scraped raw — I'd noticed that somewhere around the second block of walking, when the adrenaline thinned enough to let the sting through. There was something dried above my left ear. I touched it at a red light and my fingers came away rust-brown. A gash, probably from the concrete chip that had grazed me when I ran for the stairwell.

I pushed open the front door of the house.

Ronan's study door was closed. Light under the gap. The sound of him on a call, low and even, talking about a property deal in Bellevue like it was any other Tuesday.

Clay was on the couch. Seventeen inches of screen glow on his face, headphones around his neck, some show I didn't recognize. He looked up when I came in — not at me, exactly. At the kitchen doorway behind me. At its emptiness.

"Dinner's not ready?" he said.

Not a question. Just a fact he was registering, the way you'd note that it was raining.

I looked at him. At the dried blood on my hand. At the closed study door.

"No," I said. "It's not."

He made a small sound and turned back to the screen.

I went upstairs, stood in the bathroom, and ran the water until it was hot. I washed my hands. I cleaned the cut above my ear with a cotton ball and a steadiness that surprised me. I looked at my face in the mirror for a long time — the dust still caught in my hair, the particular flatness behind my eyes — and I thought: this is it. This is the last time I am going to feel this way inside this house.

I didn't cry. There was nothing left to cry about.

---

They were both in bed by ten.

I sat at the kitchen table with my laptop and a glass of water. The house was quiet in that specific way it always was at night — not peaceful, just empty. Like a room where something used to be.

I opened the Kingsley South University faculty portal.

I'd had the tab bookmarked for six weeks. I hadn't let myself look at it directly, the way you don't look directly at something you want too much. But my fingers knew the password. Three years away from the chemistry department and my fingers still knew the password.

I filled out the reinstatement application for Associate Professor of Chemistry. I uploaded my CV — updated quietly, in pieces, over the past year, saved in a folder labeled "recipes" so no one would open it by accident. I attached my three published papers. I wrote a cover letter that was clean and precise and said exactly what I meant.

I submitted it at 11:23 p.m.

Then I closed the laptop, washed my glass, dried it, put it back in the cabinet. I went upstairs. I lay down beside Ronan in the dark without touching him and stared at the ceiling until my eyes closed.

Three days later, an email arrived from Dr. Patricia Holt, Chair of the Chemistry Department. Formal, measured, the kind of tone that hadn't decided anything yet. She acknowledged my application. She asked for an interview.

I replied in four minutes. Confirmed the time. Closed my phone.

I did not tell Ronan.
