Chapter 3

I sat across from David Park in his sleek downtown office, my hands clutching a folder of evidence that Sarah had helped me compile. The private investigator had worked quickly, providing me with photos of Luke and Chelsea entering her new condo, receipts from romantic dinners, and bank statements showing the diverted funds.

"Mrs. Chen," David said, his voice calm and measured, "based on what you've shown me, you have a strong case for financial misconduct. The diversion of marital assets without your knowledge or consent is a serious matter."

I nodded, trying to keep my composure. "What about the condo? He used our savings—money we both contributed to."

"That property would be considered a marital asset acquired during your marriage, regardless of whose name is on the deed." He leaned forward, his expression serious. "But I need you to understand something crucial: your behavior from this point forward matters significantly."

"What do you mean?"

"No confrontations. No accusations. No emotional outbursts." David tapped his pen against his notepad. "Judges look unfavorably on vindictive behavior, even when justified. Document everything, but maintain a calm facade."

I swallowed hard. "He's living in our home, sleeping in our bed, while planning a future with her."

"I know it's difficult." His eyes softened slightly. "But this is chess, not checkers. Your next moves need to be strategic, not emotional."

I left David's office with a plan. That afternoon, I opened a separate bank account and transferred my recent bonus—money Luke didn't know about—into it. I collected my grandmother's jewelry from our safe deposit box and stored it at Sarah's office. Small steps toward independence that felt monumental.

---

"You've barely touched your food," my mother observed coldly as we sat in the upscale restaurant she'd chosen for our lunch. The white tablecloth between us felt like a vast, unbridgeable distance.

"I'm not very hungry." I pushed the salad around my plate. "Mom, I need to tell you something important. I'm filing for divorce."

Her chopsticks froze halfway to her mouth. "Don't be ridiculous."

"Luke has been having an affair with Chelsea. He stole fifty thousand dollars from our savings to buy her a condo." My voice remained steady despite the pain lancing through me. "I have proof."

My mother set down her chopsticks with deliberate precision. "And what do you expect to gain from this public humiliation? Divorce is for weak women who can't keep their husbands satisfied."

"He betrayed me. With my friend. He stole our money."

"Marriage isn't about happiness, Mia. It's about family stability and social standing." She sipped her tea, eyes cold. "Your pride will cost you everything we've worked for."

"We? This is my marriage, my life—"

"A life we carefully cultivated for you. Luke comes from a good family. His career reflects well on all of us." She lowered her voice. "Don't be too proud to fight for your marriage."

I stared at her, finally seeing the truth that had been there all along. My parents had never loved me—they'd only valued what I represented. My marriage was just another achievement to display, regardless of the rot beneath the surface.

---

I knew something was wrong the moment I walked through our front door. Luke stood in the living room, arms crossed, face thunderous.

"Planning to clean me out, Mia?" His voice was dangerously quiet. "Secret bank accounts? Meetings with divorce attorneys?"

My blood ran cold. "How did you—"

"Your mother called me." His smile was cruel. "Seems she's more concerned about our marriage than you are."

The betrayal hit me like a physical blow. My own mother had warned him—had armed him against me. I grabbed my keys and ran back to my car, tears blurring my vision as I drove to my parents' house.

My mother opened the door with an irritated expression. "Mia, what is this dramatic entrance about?"

"You called Luke?" I pushed past her into the foyer. "You told him everything I confided in you?"

"I was protecting this family from your impulsive decisions." She crossed her arms. "Someone needed to think clearly."

"He's the one who cheated! He stole our money!" My voice rose as years of suppressed rage finally broke free. "For once in your life, couldn't you have been my mother instead of his ally?"

"Don't raise your voice in my home." Her eyes narrowed. "This tantrum proves you're not thinking rationally."

"Rational? Was it rational to betray your own daughter?" I stepped toward her, shaking with fury. "You've never loved me. You've only ever loved what I represent to you."

I turned to leave, but she grabbed my arm. I jerked away violently, losing my balance. My arm caught the edge of the glass coffee table as I fell, pain shooting through me as I heard something crack.

I looked up from the floor, clutching my injured arm, to see not concern on my mother's face, but annoyance—as if my injury was an inconvenience rather than a cause for worry.

In that moment, bleeding on my parents' expensive carpet, I finally understood: I was truly alone in this fight.
