I Kissed the Quarterback Who Got My Sister Fired

8 / 10.0
Investigating Roman Hayes's NFL scandal wasn't supposed to ignite a forbidden attraction. Four years ago, my sister Talia was fired over offshore bets tied to his inner circle while he walked away clean, branding her untrustworthy. I believed he sacrificed her—until I learned she'd placed smaller wagers first. Now a fresh accusation lands on my name, and Landon Pierce, his division rival, hunts me under media glare. History or an easier future? I choose my own path.

I Kissed the Quarterback Who Got My Sister Fired Chapter 1

I became a sports reporter because my sister lost her career in one night.

Four years ago, Talia Quinn was accused of using her quarterback boyfriend Roman Hayes for betting tips.

She lost her credential, her job, and every national offer that came after.

Roman kept his contract, his endorsements, and one sentence that followed her everywhere: "I trusted the wrong person."

So when my internship assigned me to film his entire season, I walked into media day wearing the same surname everyone still hated.

Security tried to turn my badge facedown.

Roman stopped them.

He let me stay, then looked into my camera and said, "If Avery wants to accuse me, she can do it where I can answer."

For one dangerous minute, he did not look like the coward Talia had described.

Then I went back for my recorder and heard my executive producer behind a half-closed production door.

"Keep Quinn on Hayes all season."

"What if she figures out why you chose her?"

"Then make the sisters the story."

"The public already knows how to hate a Quinn."

Avery POV

"Flip it over."

The media day security guard didn't even point his scanner at the barcode. He tapped a heavy finger directly on the bold letters printed across my chest: AVERY QUINN.

"I need supervisor approval for this one," the guard said, turning his back to the bustling stadium entrance and signaling to a woman with a headset.

I stood frozen at the checkpoint, clutching my equipment bag. Three months into my job at Crossfield Sports Originals, I finally had a real assignment. Filming a season-long documentary on the star quarterback was my only ticket out of the intern pool. Instead, I was standing at a folding table, treated like a trespasser.

"Is there a problem with my credentials?" I asked.

"The problem is the name," Kelsey Reed said, marching up to the checkpoint. The production supervisor snatched my temporary press pass from the guard's hand. "I explicitly told production to screen the crew list before issuing these."

"I am the assigned reporter for the documentary," I said, keeping my tone level.

"Not anymore," Kelsey snapped.

Before she could banish me to the parking lot, the crowd of reporters and team staff parted.

Roman Hayes walked through the metal detector. He wore a simple gray hoodie, but the entire room shifted focus to him. His eyes scanned the checkpoint, stopping on Kelsey, then dropping to the badge in her hand.

He stared at the word Quinn.

Four years vanished. I was back in my sister's apartment, packing her revoked press pass and lawyer letters into a blue cardboard box. Talia had been the rising sports analytics broadcaster until a nine-month secret relationship with Roman ended in accusations of insider betting. I remembered staring at the television while Roman told a reporter, “I trusted the wrong person.”

Roman shifted his gaze from the plastic card to my camera rig. I braced myself, knowing exactly what he saw. I wasn't just a random rookie reporter.

"We can swap her out right now, Roman," Kelsey said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "I am not letting this documentary turn into a tabloid revival."

Roman did not look away from me. "Give her the badge back."

"Roman, be reasonable," Kelsey insisted. "We have backup crew members."

"Flip it back," Roman told the guard, ignoring Kelsey entirely. He pointed a finger at my cameraman. "If she has questions about Talia, she asks them while that red light is blinking. No voiceovers. No editing me into a villain in post-production."

He walked past me, his shoulder brushing my microphone cable.

Ten minutes later, I sat across from him in the media tent. The glare of the ring light cast harsh shadows over his jawline.

"Let's talk about the new offensive scheme," I said, reading from my approved clipboard. "You're running more empty backfields this season. How does that change your pre-snap reads?"

"It gives me a better look at the coverage," Roman answered, his tone flat. "We adjust based on the safeties."

My earpiece crackled.

"Stop boring them, Avery," Miles, the series director, hissed through the audio feed. "Ask him what everyone actually wants to see. Do it now, or I cut the feed."

I gripped the edge of my clipboard. I looked directly into Roman's eyes.

"Four years ago, you went on national television and said you trusted the wrong person," I said, keeping my voice steady. "Why did you cut ties with Talia when she needed you the most?"

The cameraman shifted his weight. The silence in the tent stretched tight.

Roman leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. He did not yell. He did not call for his publicist.

"Your sister's career wasn't ruined by one sentence from me," Roman said. "But that sentence is exactly what I said."

"Do you regret saying it?" I asked.

"Before you ask me about regrets," Roman replied, his tone chillingly even, "ask her why she never appealed those three bets."

My fingers slipped off the clipboard.

Three bets.

Talia had sworn for four years that the league fabricated the entire betting history. She claimed she never made a single wager. Roman's answer punched a specific, gaping hole straight through the story I grew up believing.

"Cut it right there," Miles shouted across the control area the second the interview wrapped. He pointed at the editor's monitor. "Take the pause when he sees the name Quinn. Smash cut to her question. End it on 'three bets'. Send the teaser to marketing right now."

I dropped my camera bag on the floor. "You cannot cut an unverified claim into a revenge promo."

Brianna, a senior producer, stepped between me and the editing bay. "This is exactly why a twenty-three-year-old got to sit across from a franchise quarterback. You bring the drama. If you refuse to play the game, we find a new reporter by lunch."

"It's unethical," I argued. "You're framing a legal accusation as a reality show teaser."

Heavy footsteps stopped behind me.

Roman stood at the edge of the control area, a duffel bag slung over his shoulder. He looked at Kelsey, who was standing next to the soundboard.

"Keep the full answers," Roman said.

Kelsey crossed her arms. "We have creative control, Roman."

"And I have a contract clause," Roman countered. "Every controversial question stays uncut, or the team revokes your deep-access passes tomorrow morning."

He walked out without checking to see if I was grateful. I wasn't. He handled every interaction like a calculated snap at the line of scrimmage, but he was the only reason Miles couldn't slice my family trauma into a ten-second smear campaign.

I packed up my gear and headed for the stadium exit. Halfway to my car, I realized my audio recorder was missing.

I marched back down the concrete tunnel toward the production office. The door was cracked open.

"She is going to figure it out," Brianna said from inside the room.

I stopped. I pressed my back against the cold cinderblock wall and listened.

"Who cares if she figures out we didn't hire her for her skills?" Miles asked, the scrape of a chair echoing into the hallway. "Roman refuses to do standard PR. A Quinn is the only thing that forces him to engage on camera. And the audience already knows exactly how to hate that last name."

I did not push the door open. I did not scream.

I pulled my phone from my pocket, opened the voice memo app, and hit the red circle.

"We just need to keep her angry enough to ask the awful questions," Miles continued. "By week three, the ratings will guarantee our renewal. Let her think she's investigating her sister's downfall."

I stopped the recording. I tapped the share button and emailed the audio file directly to my private, encrypted server.

A notification dropped down from the top of my screen.

It was a scheduled text from Miles to the entire production crew.

Teaser drop at 7 AM tomorrow: THE QUINN SISTERS VS. ROMAN HAYES.

I stared at the bold letters, my thumb hovering over the forward button, ready to send the secret audio file straight to the league's broadcast ethics committee.
