Chapter 2

Kendall's apartment was a fortress of legal precision. The moment I walked through her door, I felt a strange calm settle over me. She had already transformed her dining table into a war room—multiple laptops open, financial documents spread out in neat stacks, and a half-empty bottle of wine with two glasses beside it.

"I've been waiting for this call for years," she said, pulling up a chair for me. Her eyes gleamed with the predatory focus I'd seen her use to dismantle opposing counsel in courtrooms across Manhattan. "Tell me everything."

I did. Every detail. The posts, the comments, the burner account, the timestamps that aligned perfectly with Darren's "late meetings." Kendall took notes in her precise handwriting, occasionally pausing to tap her fountain pen against her teeth.

"He's not just cheating," she said finally. "He's orchestrating a public humiliation campaign. This is good."

"Good?" I repeated.

"For our case." She smiled—that sharp, vicious smile that had made her the most feared divorce attorney in the city. "Infidelity plus defamation plus financial control? Darling, we're going to take him for everything."

Over the next three days, Kendall worked with surgical precision. She pulled our joint account statements, cross-referenced credit card charges with hotel receipts, and recovered deleted messages from our shared cloud account. She hired a tech forensics specialist to trace the burner account's metadata back to Darren's devices.

"Look at this," she said on the third night, turning her laptop toward me. On the screen was a visual map of digital connections—all leading back to Darren's phone. "He was so arrogant, he logged into the burner account from his company phone. The same phone he used to text Brinley. The same phone he used to like her posts about you."

I stared at the screen, at the undeniable proof of his betrayal. "How did he think he wouldn't get caught?"

"Because men like Darren never think they'll face consequences," Kendall replied, closing her laptop with a decisive click. "They believe they're entitled to everything—the wife, the mistress, the empire. And they never, ever think the wife will fight back."

She was right. Darren had never seen me as a threat. He'd never seen me at all.

I was about to tell her about my plan to revoke the patent licenses when the doorbell rang. It was barely nine in the morning. Kendall frowned, checking her security monitor.

"It's your parents," she said, her tone hardening.

My stomach dropped. "How did they—"

"Your mother called my office yesterday, fishing for information. I should have warned you." She sighed. "Do you want me to get rid of them?"

I shook my head. "No. I need to do this."

The doorbell rang again, more insistent this time.

I opened the door to find my mother standing there, clutching a tissue. Her eyes were dry, but she was making a show of dabbing at them anyway. My father stood behind her, arms crossed, his face a mask of barely concealed panic.

"Elodie," my mother began, her voice trembling with practiced emotion. "Sweetheart, please. We need to talk. This situation... it's getting out of hand."

I stepped back, allowing them into the apartment but saying nothing.

"Darling," my mother continued, settling onto Kendall's pristine white sofa without invitation. "You have to think about the family. About Julian. About what this will do to us all. Men will be men, you know? They make mistakes. But a good wife forgives. A good wife understands."

My father nodded sharply. "Your mother's right. Do you have any idea what a divorce would do to our financial situation? To Julian's future? Robinson Tech is our biggest investment partner. If this goes public..."

I looked at them—really looked at them. My mother, performing her tears. My father, calculating his losses. Not once did either of them ask if I was okay. Not once did they acknowledge what Darren had done to me.

"Darren's been publicly humiliating me," I said quietly. "He's been encouraging his mistress to post cruel things about me online. He's been lying to me for months. And you're worried about money?"

"Oh, Elodie." My mother's voice dripped with condescension. "Social media drama. Is that really worth destroying a marriage over? You've always been so dramatic, just like your father said."

I felt something cold settle in my chest. Not hurt. Something harder.

"What about your brother?" my father interjected, his voice sharp. "Do you want Julian to lose everything because you can't handle a little marital indiscretion? That's not very family-oriented thinking, Elodie."

I stood up. "I think you should leave."

My mother's face froze. "What did you say?"

"I said leave." I walked to the door and opened it. "Now."

They stared at me, shocked. My mother's tissue fluttered to the floor. My father's mouth opened and closed.

"Elodie Hart," he began, using my full name like a weapon, "you are making a terrible mistake—"

I closed the door. The lock clicked.

That evening, after they'd gone, I called a locksmith. I changed every lock. I blocked their numbers. I blocked Julian's too.

The cord was cut. Cleanly. Finally. Without ceremony.

Kendall watched me from the doorway, a small smile playing on her lips. "Now," she said, "we're ready. Let's take everything from him."

I nodded. It was time.
