Chapter 3

The handbag showed up in my feed at 8:47 in the morning.

Brinley posted it with a slow-motion unboxing video. Her nails tapped the box. Her voice went breathy. "When he says you're the only one who gets him," the caption read. Then, underneath: "Meanwhile his 'wife' is probably still figuring out how to code a resume. Some of us just have it. 💅"

I didn't flinch. That surprised me more than the post itself.

I screenshotted it anyway. Timestamped it. Sent it to Kendall without a word.

She texted back in four minutes. "Adding it to the file. Keep going, Brinley. Please. God bless her."

I set my phone face-down on Kendall's kitchen table and looked at the folder in front of me instead. Eleven patent licensing agreements. Eight years of my handwriting in the margins, my late nights, my name buried under legal language that made sure Darren's company never actually owned what kept it alive.

I had written those contracts myself. Back when I still believed in forever, I'd built in five-year terms, mutual renewal clauses, ironclad revocation rights that required nothing but written notice. I told myself back then it was just good business. Some part of me, even in love, hadn't trusted him all the way.

That part of me had been right.

"You ready?" Kendall asked, sliding a single sheet of paper toward me. The notice. Clean. Precise. No emotion in it at all.

I signed my name at the bottom.

"Send it," I said.

Robinson Tech's general counsel called Darren forty minutes after the letter landed in his inbox. Kendall found out through her own sources by lunch. Apparently the man read it twice, out loud, to make sure he wasn't losing his mind. Apparently he said, "She can't do this," three times before anyone told him she absolutely could.

"He's panicking," Kendall said, delighted, scrolling through a message from a contact inside the building. "Good. Let him panic somewhere private. We'll see him tomorrow."

Robinson Tech's headquarters smelled the way it always had — cold coffee and ambition. I hadn't been inside in over a year. Darren didn't like me visiting. Said it "muddled the professional image."

Kendall walked half a step ahead of me in a blazer so sharp it looked like it could draw blood. She didn't knock on his office door. She opened it.

Darren looked up from his desk, already annoyed, already reaching for whatever dismissal he kept loaded for interruptions. Then he saw me standing behind her.

His face did something complicated. Surprise. Then a smirk, quick and practiced, like armor snapping into place.

"Elodie." He leaned back in his chair. "Come to apologize for that little stunt with the patents?"

"No," I said.

Kendall stepped forward and set the folder on his desk with a soft, deliberate click. "Divorce papers, Mr. Robinson. Filed this morning. Full equitable division of marital assets. Backed by infidelity documentation that includes, but is not limited to, screenshots, financial records, and a burner account registered under an IP address that traces directly back to this building."

Darren didn't open the folder. He looked at me instead. "You're serious."

"Very," I said.

He laughed. It wasn't a nervous laugh. It was loud, genuine, the kind of laugh that came from a man who had never once imagined losing.

"Elodie." He shook his head, still grinning, and picked up the folder. "You don't have a lawyer. You have a job. You've never had a job." He flipped it open, skimmed half a page, and then, almost lazily, tore it in two. The sound was sharp in the quiet office. He tossed the pieces onto the desk like confetti.

Then he opened a drawer, pulled out a checkbook, and wrote something fast. He slid it across the desk toward me. Five hundred thousand dollars. His signature, bold and careless, at the bottom.

"Take this," he said. "Disappear for a while. Get your hair done, buy yourself something nice, whatever it is you people do. You'll be back within a month, begging me to take you home. You always come back."

I looked at the check. I didn't touch it.

"You people," I repeated quietly.

"You know what I mean." He waved a hand, already bored, already reaching for his phone like the conversation was over.

Kendall crouched, unhurried, and gathered the torn halves of the divorce papers off the floor. She straightened them, tapped them once against the desk to align the edges, and slid them back into a fresh folder like she was filing a receipt.

"We have copies," she said, smiling that bright, dangerous smile of hers. "Lots of copies, Mr. Robinson. Filed with the court this morning, timestamped and notarized, so tearing this one up was really more of a — " she tilted her head, considering — "symbolic gesture. Cathartic, I'm sure. Enjoy your evening."

She turned for the door. I stayed a second longer, just long enough to watch something flicker behind Darren's eyes — the first real crack, small and fast, gone before he could stop it.

Then I followed Kendall out, leaving the check untouched on his desk, and didn't look back once.
