Chapter 2

I start with the credit card statements.

I sit at the kitchen table with my laptop and a cup of coffee I won't drink. The brownstone is quiet. Brock is at work. I have the whole day.

I pull up the joint account first. The one Brock calls *ours*. The one my inheritance funds.

I scroll back six months. Then a year. Then two.

The purchases blur together at first. Restaurants. Ubers. Grocery deliveries. Normal things.

Then I see the other things.

A charge at a boutique in SoHo. Fifteen hundred dollars. I don't own anything from that store.

A hotel in the Meatpacking District. Three hundred and forty dollars. We didn't stay there together.

Another boutique. Another hotel. Jewelry from a designer I've never heard of.

I make a spreadsheet. I copy every charge I don't recognize. I add timestamps. I add amounts.

The total climbs.

Then I find the wire transfers.

Eighty-five thousand dollars. Sent in chunks over eighteen months to an account I've never seen before.

I sit back. My coffee is cold. My hands are steady.

I screenshot everything. I print everything. I organize it in a folder with labeled dividers.

I used to organize my paints this way. By hue. By intensity. By the specific feeling each color could create when it bled into another.

This is the same. Just different colors.

I close the laptop. I call Marcus Webb. He's the attorney my father used for estate planning. I've met him twice. He remembers me.

"I need a consultation," I say. "Confidential. As soon as possible."

He doesn't ask questions. He just gives me a time.

I hang up. I sit in the quiet kitchen of the house I own.

I feel awake.

---

Finn's office is cold today. I notice it more than usual.

I sit on the couch. He's across from me in his chair. Pen resting on his notebook. Waiting.

"I used to paint," I say.

He looks up.

"Watercolors, mostly. Small things. Noah liked watching the colors bleed together. He'd sit on the floor next to my easel and point at the paper. He called it magic."

Finn's pen stops.

He sets it down completely. Full stop. Complete attention.

"I haven't painted since he died," I continue. "I wrapped everything up and put it in the studio closet. I haven't opened it."

"Do you want to?" Finn asks.

I trace the rim of my water glass. A habit I'm not aware of.

"I don't know," I say. "I think I'm afraid of what it would feel like. To do something I loved. Without him there to see it."

Finn is quiet for a long moment.

"Grief doesn't mean you stop living," he says finally. "It means you carry him with you while you do."

I look up. His eyes are steady on mine.

Something shifts in my chest. Not relief. Not comfort. Something sharper. Something that feels like permission.

"I think I might try," I say.

He nods once. He doesn't smile. He doesn't need to.

When the session ends, he walks me to the elevator like he always does now. His office is on the third floor. The parking garage is in the basement. The building is old. The lighting is bad.

He presses the button. The elevator doors open.

"See you Thursday," he says.

I step inside. I turn to face him.

"Thank you," I say.

He nods. The doors close.

I ride down alone. The elevator is slow. The fluorescent light flickers.

When I reach the garage, I walk to my car quickly. I unlock it. I get in.

I sit in the driver's seat for a moment before I start the engine.

I think about the way Finn's pen stopped when I mentioned painting. The way he gave me his full attention. The way he didn't rush to fix anything. He just listened.

Brock has never listened to me like that.

Not once.

I start the car. I drive home.

---

That night, Brock comes home late. He smells like wine and expensive cologne.

He doesn't ask about my day. He never does.

He goes straight to the bathroom. I hear him typing on his phone. The sound carries through the bedroom door.

I lie in bed with my own phone. I open the folder of screenshots. I scroll through them slowly.

My husband. Explaining to strangers how mature he is. How sophisticated. How his wife is cold and broken and probably sleeping with her therapist.

How he deserves better.

I close the folder. I open my photos. I scroll back. Back past the dark months. Back past the hospital. Back to the golden afternoon in the backyard.

Noah. Mid-laugh. Caught in the light.

I stare at the photo for a long time.

Brock finishes typing. The bathroom light goes off. He comes to bed without a word.

I close my eyes.

I am awake now.

And I know exactly what I'm going to do.

---

The next morning, I go to the studio closet.

I open the door. The wrapped watercolors are stacked in the back. Brown paper. Twine. Untouched.

I don't unwrap them. Not yet.

But I stand there. I look at them.

And I think about what Finn said.

*Grief doesn't mean you stop living. It means you carry him with you while you do.*

I close the closet door.

I go back to the kitchen. I open my laptop. I review the spreadsheet one more time.

Eighty-five thousand dollars. Wire transfers. Unauthorized purchases. A pattern of theft disguised as marriage.

I save the file. I back it up. I print another copy.

Marcus Webb's office is downtown. I have an appointment tomorrow at ten.

I close the laptop.

I am awake.

And I am done being quiet.
