Chapter 3

Brock leaves the bedroom door open now.

It's deliberate. I know it is.

I'm in the kitchen making coffee when I hear his voice drift down the hall. Low. Warm. The voice he used to use with me.

'I miss you too,' he says. A pause. A laugh. 'No, she's downstairs. It's fine.'

I pour the coffee slowly. My hands are steady.

He knows I can hear him. That's the point.

I take my cup to the table. I sit down. I open my laptop and pull up the documentation folder.

I add a new entry. Time. Date. Summary of the open-door phone call. I save it. I close the laptop.

Brock comes downstairs ten minutes later. He's smiling. He pours himself coffee and leans against the counter.

'Sleep okay?' he asks.

I look at him. He's wearing the watch I bought him for our anniversary. The shirt Katalina probably picked out.

'Fine,' I say.

He nods. He drinks his coffee. He checks his phone.

'I have a late meeting tonight,' he says. 'Don't wait up.'

'Okay.'

He leaves. The front door closes. The brownstone goes quiet.

I sit at the table and finish my coffee. I don't cry. I don't shake.

I just add another line to the spreadsheet.

---

That evening, Brock comes home around nine. He smells like wine and her perfume.

I'm at the kitchen table with my laptop. He walks past me to the fridge. He pulls out leftovers. He heats them in the microwave without asking if I've eaten.

When the microwave beeps, he takes the plate to the table and sits down across from me.

He eats for a few minutes in silence. Then he sets down his fork.

'You know,' he says pleasantly, 'maybe if you put in half the effort with me that you put in with your therapist, we wouldn't be here.'

I look up from my laptop.

He's smiling. Not cruel. Just factual. Like he's explaining something obvious.

'I'm just saying,' he continues. 'You've got all this energy for your twice-a-week sessions. You get dressed up. You do your hair. You're gone for hours.'

I close my laptop slowly.

'But at home?' He shrugs. 'Nothing. You barely talk to me. You don't cook anymore. You don't even try.'

I trace the rim of my coffee cup. A habit I'm not aware of.

'I go to therapy because our son died,' I say quietly.

Brock picks up his fork again.

'I know that,' he says. 'But it's been over a year, Emilia. At some point, you have to move on.'

He takes another bite. He scrolls through his phone with his free hand.

I sit there and watch him eat.

He doesn't ask about Noah. He never does. He hasn't said Noah's name out loud since the funeral.

I stand up. I take my laptop. I go upstairs.

In the bedroom, I open the documentation folder. I add the remark. I timestamp it. I note, with quiet precision, that he never asks about our son.

I save the file. I back it up.

Then I lie down in the dark and wait for him to come to bed.

---

Marcus Webb's office is in Midtown. Forty-third floor. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

I sit across from him with the folder on my lap. He's in his sixties. Sharp suit. Kind eyes. He handled my father's estate planning. He remembers me.

'Thank you for seeing me,' I say.

He nods. 'Of course. What can I do for you?'

I open the folder. I slide the documents across his desk. The prenuptial agreement. The wire transfer records. The supplementary card statements. The spreadsheet with every unauthorized charge highlighted and timestamped.

Marcus puts on his reading glasses. He reviews the documents in silence.

I watch him read. I don't fidget. I don't explain. I just wait.

After several minutes, he sets the papers down and removes his glasses.

'This is very thorough,' he says.

I nod.

'The prenuptial agreement is clear,' he continues. 'The brownstone, both vehicles, and all investment accounts are solely in your name. Your husband has no legal claim to any of it.'

'I know,' I say.

'The wire transfers to this account—' He taps the page. 'Eighty-five thousand dollars over eighteen months. Do you know who the recipient is?'

'His brother. Zavier. Gambling debts.'

Marcus nods slowly. 'That constitutes misappropriation of marital funds. You can recover it.'

'I want to,' I say.

He makes a note. 'The supplementary card charges—these purchases were made without your knowledge or consent?'

'Yes.'

'We can cancel the cards immediately. We can also pursue recovery of the funds if you choose.'

I trace the rim of my water glass. The office is quiet except for the hum of the city below.

'What do you advise?' I ask.

Marcus leans back in his chair. He folds his hands.

'Continue documenting,' he says. 'Don't confront him. Don't change your routine. When you're ready to move, we move all at once. Cancel the cards. Change the locks. File for divorce and asset forfeiture. Pursue recovery of the misappropriated funds. He won't see it coming.'

I meet his eyes.

'How long?' I ask.

'Two weeks. Maybe three. I'll prepare everything. When you give the word, it happens.'

I nod. I stand. I shake his hand.

'Thank you,' I say.

He walks me to the door.

'Mrs. Torres,' he says quietly. 'You're doing the right thing.'

I ride the elevator down alone. I walk out into the Midtown afternoon with the folder on my lap.

I take the subway home. I watch Manhattan slide past the window.

I am awake.

And I am ready.

---

Mrs. Torres calls on Wednesday afternoon.

I'm in the studio when my phone rings. I almost don't answer. But I do.

'Emilia,' she says. No greeting. Just my name.

'Hello, Mrs. Torres.'

'I need to talk to you about Zavier.'

I sit down on the studio floor. I wait.

'The creditors are getting aggressive again,' she continues. 'He needs help. Brock needs to send another wire. Family helps family, Emilia. You understand that.'

I trace the rim of my water bottle.

'How much?' I ask.

'Twenty thousand. Maybe twenty-five. Brock will know.'

'I see.'

'You married into this family,' Mrs. Torres says. Her voice is firm. Maternal. 'This is what family does. We take care of each other.'

I close my eyes.

'I'll speak to my attorney,' I say.

Silence.

'Your attorney?' Her voice sharpens. 'Why do you need an attorney?'

'I'll call you back,' I say.

I hang up.

I sit on the studio floor for a long time. Then I open my laptop. I add the call to the documentation folder. Time. Date. Summary. Amount requested.

I open my email. I write to Marcus Webb.

*Accelerate the misappropriation recovery filing. I'm ready to move.*

I hit send.

I close the laptop.

I am awake.

And I am done waiting.
