Chapter 1

The kitchen is dark except for the glow of my phone. Two in the morning. I stopped sleeping through the night after Noah died. Now I just move through the brownstone like a ghost, room to room, waiting for the sun.

I'm scrolling through Reddit. I don't know why. Habit. Something to do with my hands. The coffee cup in front of me is cold. I've been tracing the rim for twenty minutes.

Then I see it.

A post in one of those relationship advice forums. The username means nothing to me. But the details stop my thumb mid-scroll.

*My wife and I have what most people would call an unconventional arrangement. We're both seeing other people. She's been in therapy for over a year — twice a week sessions with a male therapist in Manhattan. I'm not stupid. I know what's happening there. Meanwhile, I've reconnected with someone from my past. We're both adults. We're handling it with emotional intelligence.*

My chest goes tight.

I read it again.

Twice-weekly therapy. Manhattan. Male therapist.

I scroll down. He's replied to comments. Dozens of them.

*She's always been cold. Even before the kid died, she was hard to reach. I'm a six-figure tech professional. I've built a good life. I deserve partnership, not a wife who treats me like a roommate.*

The kid.

He called Noah *the kid*.

My hands are shaking. I set the phone down on the counter. The blue light makes the whole kitchen look like it's underwater. I feel like I'm drowning.

I pick the phone back up.

More replies. He's describing our neighborhood. Our brownstone. He uses phrases I've heard him say a hundred times — *emotional intelligence*, *high-value partner*, *mutually open arrangement*. He talks about his 'frigid' wife's therapy schedule like he's narrating a documentary.

Strangers are congratulating him. Telling him he's mature. Telling him he deserves better.

I read the whole thread. Every word. Every reply.

Then I open my laptop.

I screenshot everything. The original post. Every comment. Every smug, self-congratulatory sentence where my husband explains to the internet how sophisticated he is for cheating on me while I'm in therapy for losing our son.

I save them all to a folder. I label it clearly. I close the laptop.

I sit in the dark kitchen of the house I own — the house my inheritance paid for, the house Brock calls *ours* — and I don't cry.

Something else is happening. Something colder. Sharper.

For the first time since Noah died, I feel awake.

---

Finn's office is always slightly too cold. I used to think it was an accident. Now I think he does it on purpose. It keeps me alert. Present.

I sit on the couch with the extra blanket folded beside me. I don't use it today. I don't need it.

Finn is across from me in his chair, pen resting on his notebook. He's waiting. He's good at that.

"I remembered something," I say.

He doesn't write. He just looks at me.

"About Noah. A good thing."

His expression doesn't change, but something softens around his eyes.

"He was in the backyard," I continue. "It was late afternoon. The light was gold. He was laughing at something — I don't even remember what. Maybe a bird. Maybe nothing. He just laughed."

I stop. The silence stretches.

"I haven't let myself remember the good things," I say quietly. "I've only let myself remember the hospital. The fever. The calls Brock didn't answer."

Finn sets his pen down completely. Full stop. Complete attention.

"I think I've been asleep for a very long time," I say. "I think I might be waking up."

He holds the silence. He doesn't rush to fill it with reassurance or analysis. He just lets it sit there between us, heavy and true.

When I finally look up, his eyes are steady on mine.

"You are," he says.

---

That night, Brock is in the bathroom with his phone. I can hear him typing. The sound carries through the bedroom door.

I lie in bed and stare at the ceiling.

He's writing another post. I know he is. Another update for his invisible audience. Another performance of the sophisticated man navigating complexity with maturity.

I don't get up. I don't confront him.

I just listen to the sound of him typing and think about the folder on my laptop.

The screenshots. The prenuptial agreement I pulled from the safe this morning. The document I memorized the night I signed it because I wanted to understand every word that bore my name.

The brownstone is mine. The cars are mine. The investment accounts are mine.

I have always known this.

I just never imagined I would need to use it.

Brock finishes typing. The bathroom light goes off. He comes to bed and lies down beside me without a word.

I close my eyes.

I am awake now.

And I am done sleeping.
