Chapter 4

He came on a Tuesday.

I didn't see it happen. I was at my desk, working through a campaign brief, the kind of focused quiet I'd been building carefully, brick by brick, for two weeks. Patricia was in her office with the door half-open. The plants on the windowsill were doing well.

I found out the way you find out about things that have already been decided about you — someone came to get me.

Kyle from HR. Young, uncomfortable, not meeting my eyes. 'Lylah. Marcus wants to see you. His office.'

I set my pen down. My hands were steady. I noticed that.

Marcus Webb was the senior partner, a cautious man in his fifties who wore fleece vests and made decisions the way he drank coffee — slowly, with both hands wrapped around the cup. When I walked in, he was standing at the window with his back to me, which told me everything before he said a word.

He turned around. His face had the particular arrangement of a man who has already made up his mind and is now performing the discomfort of it.

'Lylah.' He gestured at the chair across from his desk. 'Sit down, please.'

I sat.

'We've had a — there's been a concern raised.' He cleared his throat. 'By someone close to you. A family member.'

I felt it then. Not surprise. Something colder and more specific than surprise. I pressed my thumb against the inside of my ring finger under the desk where he couldn't see.

'Your husband came in this morning,' Marcus said. 'He was — he seemed genuinely worried. He described some incidents at home. Emotional volatility, he said. Some — fabrications, he called them. He said he was concerned about your stability in a professional environment.'

He said each word like he was carrying it carefully, like it might spill. He had believed every single one of them.

'He said fabrications,' I repeated.

'He gave some examples.' Marcus looked down at his desk. 'I'm not going to — I don't want to get into specifics. But given the nature of our client relationships, and the sensitivity of the accounts you'd be working on—' He stopped. Started again. 'This isn't a decision I'm making lightly.'

It was exactly a decision he was making lightly. It had taken Darren one morning.

'I understand,' I said. My voice came out level. It surprised me again.

Kyle walked me back to my desk with the particular careful distance of someone who has been told not to leave you alone. I packed the box myself. It didn't take long — two weeks at a desk doesn't accumulate much. A notebook. A pen I liked. The small succulent I'd bought on my lunch break last Thursday because the office had plants and I'd wanted to be the kind of person who kept things alive.

I carried the box to the elevator. I pressed the button. I stood there and watched the number change.

The doors opened. I stepped in.

Patricia was there.

She didn't say anything at first. She looked at the box. Then she looked at my face. Her expression didn't change, but something in her eyes did — a sharpening, a decision made.

She reached into her jacket pocket and pressed a folded piece of paper into my hand.

'I was watching through the glass,' she said. 'The whole time. I kept records. Timestamps, what he said to Marcus, who was in the room.' A pause. 'Call me.'

The elevator reached the lobby. The doors opened.

'Patricia—'

'Call me,' she said again. Flat. Final. The doors closed between us.

I stood in the lobby for a moment. Then I walked out into the gray afternoon with my cardboard box and my succulent and the folded paper, and I tucked the paper into my coat pocket beside my mother's reading glasses, and I walked to the bus stop and I waited.

---

That night I sat on the floor of my studio with my back against the bed and counted what I had.

Seventy-four dollars in cash. No card that worked. A box of crackers. Two cans of tomato soup. A succulent on the windowsill that didn't need much.

My mother's portrait watched from the nightstand. The bracelet was warm on my wrist.

I ate soup from the can, cold, with a plastic spoon, and I called the legal aid numbers one by one. Each conversation ended the same way — patient voices, careful language, the same wall dressed in different words. Without accessible funds. Given the complexity of the assets involved. We'd recommend securing representation before—

I thanked each one and hung up.

I lay back on the floor and stared at the ceiling. The bakery below me had gone quiet. The city outside was doing its city things, indifferent and continuous.

Seventy-four dollars. No job. A husband with lawyers and frozen accounts and a tilted head and years of practice at this.

I pressed my thumb against my ring finger.

I had Patricia's number in my pocket.

I had my mother's glasses.

I had the bracelet.

I had the folder on my phone labeled 'D,' growing quietly in the dark.

I wasn't done calculating. I just hadn't found the number yet.
