Chapter 5

The knock came at nine-forty on a Tuesday morning.

I was at the sink, rinsing a mug. The sound was polite. Three knocks, evenly spaced, the kind of knock that assumed permission had already been granted.

I dried my hands. I crossed the small studio and opened the door.

Darren stood in the hallway wearing a navy coat I'd bought him two Christmases ago. Monica was behind him in a silk blouse the color of champagne, her arms crossed, her expression arranged into something that looked like boredom but wasn't quite.

'Lylah,' Darren said. He said my name the way you'd greet someone at a dinner party. Warm. Familiar. Like the last two weeks hadn't happened at all.

I didn't move from the doorway.

'We need to talk,' he said. That reasonable tone. The one I'd heard a thousand times, the one that made you feel like disagreeing was the unreasonable choice. 'Can we come in?'

I should have closed the door. I knew that even as I stepped back. But some part of me—the part that had been trained for years to make space for him, to accommodate, to smooth—moved before I could stop it.

He walked in. Monica followed.

Darren looked around the studio with the careful slowness of someone appraising something. The single window. The hardwood floors that needed refinishing. The secondhand table I'd bought off Craigslist. The box of crackers on the counter beside the sink.

His mouth did something small. Not quite a smile.

'This is what you chose,' he said quietly. Not a question. An observation. 'Over coming home.'

'I am home,' I said.

He tilted his head. There it was. That angle. 'Lylah. This has gone on long enough. You've made your point. You're angry. I understand that. But you're making this so much harder than it needs to be.'

Monica drifted past him, moving through the room the way you'd move through a museum exhibit. Touching things. The edge of the table. The windowsill. She stopped at the nightstand.

'You can't live like this,' Darren continued. His voice stayed level. Concerned. 'You have no job. No money. You're—' He gestured vaguely at the space around us. 'You're punishing yourself to punish me. That's not rational.'

'I filed for divorce,' I said. 'That's rational.'

Something flickered across his face. Fast. Gone before I could name it.

'You filed paperwork,' he said. 'That's not the same thing as meaning it.'

Monica picked up the framed portrait from the nightstand. My mother's photograph. The one I'd carried from the funeral home, the one I'd set carefully beside the bed every night since.

She held it at arm's length. Studied it the way you'd study something in a thrift store you weren't planning to buy.

'Is this her?' Monica asked. Not to me. To Darren. Like I wasn't in the room.

Darren didn't answer.

Monica tilted her head—a mirror of Darren's gesture, something she'd learned from him—and then she opened her hand.

The frame fell.

It hit the tile floor with a crack that sounded louder than it should have. The glass shattered outward in a starburst. The frame split at the corner. My mother's face lay in the center of the wreckage, smiling at something off-camera, surrounded by shards.

Monica looked at me. Her expression didn't change. 'Dead people don't need pictures,' she said.

I moved.

I didn't decide to move. My body did it without me. I crossed the room and shoved her, both hands flat against her chest, hard enough that she stumbled backward into the wall. Her head hit with a dull thud. Her eyes went wide.

Darren was between us in a heartbeat.

He caught Monica by the shoulders, steadied her with exaggerated care, his body angled to shield her from me. He looked at me over her shoulder and his face was calm. Perfectly calm.

'That,' he said quietly, 'was a mistake.'

He reached into his coat pocket and took out his phone.

'I'm calling the police,' he said. He said it the way you'd say you were ordering takeout. Factual. Already decided. 'You just assaulted someone in front of a witness. That's a criminal charge, Lylah. A record.'

Monica straightened her blouse. She wasn't scared. She was smiling. Small. Composed.

'Do you understand what that means?' Darren continued. He was looking at me but his hands were still on Monica's shoulders, protective, performative. 'No judge is going to grant favorable terms to a woman with a documented history of violence. You just handed me exactly what I needed.'

He started to dial.

I stood there in the broken glass. My mother's face looked up at me from the floor. The bracelet was warm on my wrist. My hands were shaking now. Finally shaking.

I couldn't see a way out.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my ring finger and I tried to think and I couldn't think and Darren's thumb moved across the screen, steady and unhurried, and Monica's smile widened just slightly, and somewhere below me the bakery smelled like bread and I thought, with a clarity that felt like drowning—
