Chapter 3

The offer letter came on a Thursday morning, seven-eighteen a.m., while I was sitting on the floor of my studio eating crackers over the sink because I hadn't bought a table yet.

I read it three times. Junior Account Coordinator. Vantage Creative. South Lake Union. Start date: Monday.

I set the phone down on the old hardwood floor and pressed both palms flat against the wood and breathed.

I had spent two full days on that application. I'd rebuilt my portfolio from scratch — pulling together the freelance projects I'd done quietly during the marriage, the ones Darren had called 'your little hobby stuff' with that particular tilt of his head. A rebrand for a bakery in Fremont. Social copy for a women's clothing boutique. A campaign deck I'd done for a friend's nonprofit, unpaid, just because the work was interesting. I'd laid it all out carefully, the way you lay out evidence.

Apparently it was enough.

I ate the rest of the crackers standing up. I didn't have champagne. I didn't have anyone to call. I looked at my mother's portrait on the nightstand and said, out loud, 'I got a job, Mom.' The room was quiet. The bakery below me was starting up — I could smell bread through the floor, yeast and warmth rising through the old boards — and I stood there in my socks and let it be enough.

---

Vantage Creative was on the fourth floor of a building that smelled like espresso and printer toner. Patricia Nguyen met me at the elevator.

She was maybe forty, compact and precise, the kind of woman who moved like every step was already decided. She shook my hand once, firm, and walked me through the open floor without stopping to let me look around.

'Portfolio was strong,' she said. 'The nonprofit deck especially. You understand restraint, which most people your age don't.' She said it like a fact, not a compliment. I liked that.

She showed me to a small desk near the window. The glass looked out over the water, gray-green and wide. There were plants on the sill, real ones, well-kept. Someone here paid attention to things.

'We don't do drama here,' Patricia said. She set a folder on my desk — onboarding documents, access codes, a project brief already marked up in red pen. 'We just do good work.'

'Understood,' I said.

She nodded once and walked back toward her office. I sat down, opened the folder, and started reading.

At noon I walked three blocks to a sandwich place and ordered a turkey on sourdough and a coffee and sat by the window and ate the whole thing. I didn't add it up in my head. I didn't calculate what was left after. I just ate, and watched the street, and when the coffee was gone I went back to work.

It was such a small thing. It felt enormous.

---

The first text came that evening.

*We should talk. Call me.*

I was on the bus home, my bag on my lap, the window fogged from body heat. I read it. I put my phone face-down on my thigh.

The second came an hour later, while I was unlocking my door.

*Lylah. This silence isn't helping either of us. You're making this harder than it needs to be.*

I went inside. I hung up my coat. I took my mother's glasses out of the pocket and set them on the nightstand the way I always did, careful, the bent arm facing out.

The third came just after ten.

*Fine. You want to play it this way. You'll regret this.*

I sat on the edge of the bed and read all three in order. I noticed the pattern — the way they moved, conciliatory to reasonable to cold, like a script he'd run before, like a dial he knew how to turn. I had lived inside that pattern for years. I had learned to read it the way you learn to read weather, watching for the signs, adjusting accordingly.

I wasn't adjusting anymore.

I opened a new folder in my photos. I screenshotted each message, all three, and dropped them in. I labeled the folder 'D.' Short, clean, takes up no space.

Then I plugged my phone in, turned off the lamp, and lay down in the dark with my mother's bracelet warm against my wrist and the smell of tomorrow's bread already starting somewhere below me.

Darren was realizing something.

I had realized it first.

This round of the game had already ended. He just didn't know yet that I was the one who'd walked away from the board.
