Chapter 3

I woke to the sound of tires on gravel.

For a second I didn't know where I was. The ceiling was too high, the sheets too soft, and the light coming through the tall windows had the pale, careful quality of a New York morning that hadn't decided yet whether to be kind. Then I remembered. The suite. The garden. The wildflower on the desk, still there, still mine.

I sat up. Reached for my phone.

Seventeen missed calls. Three from Celeste. The rest from a number I hadn't seen in almost two months — my mother's private line.

A text at the top of the screen. Just two words.

*We're here.*

I was down the stairs before I'd tied the sash of my robe. Mrs. Callahan was already at the front door, holding it open, her expression the kind of neutral that had clearly been practiced.

My mother saw me first.

She was still in her traveling coat, cashmere, the color of stone, her hair pulled back the way she wore it on planes. She didn't say anything. She just crossed the foyer in three quick steps and put her arms around me, and I felt the tremor in her shoulders before I heard it in her breath.

"Mom," I said.

"I know," she whispered. "I know, sweetheart. I know."

Behind her, my father stood in the doorway with a leather folder tucked under one arm. He looked older than I remembered. Not tired — sharpened. Like someone had run a whetstone down the length of him on the flight over.

He met my eyes. Held them a long moment.

"Esme," he said. Just that.

Then he walked past us into the sitting room and set the folder down on the coffee table with a soft, deliberate sound.

—

My mother made me sit. She poured tea I didn't drink and cupped my hands between hers like she was warming something she was afraid had gone too cold.

"He read the whole folder on the plane," she said quietly. "Every page. Didn't say a word after. Just closed it and looked out the window for six hours."

"What was in it?"

"Everything." She glanced toward the hallway where my father had gone to make a phone call. "Every patent. Every license. Every seed round. Every partnership your father put his name on for that boy over the last eleven years." Her mouth pulled tight. "Your father built the ground Aden walks on, Esme. He forgot that."

"He didn't forget," I said. "He just stopped thinking it mattered."

She looked at me. Really looked, the way she used to when I was small and had said something she wasn't ready to hear from me yet.

"I'm so sorry," she said. "I'm so sorry we weren't here."

I didn't know what to do with that, so I didn't do anything. I just squeezed her hand.

My father came back into the room, buttoning his cuff. His driver was waiting in the car outside. He didn't need to tell us where he was going.

He stopped in front of me. Set one hand, briefly, on the top of my head — a gesture from when I was six years old, one he hadn't made in maybe twenty years.

"I'll be back by lunch," he said.

And then he was gone.

—

I didn't turn on the news. I didn't have to.

Celeste called at 10:47.

"Esme." Her voice was low, breathless, the way she got when she was watching something she couldn't look away from. "Are you seeing this?"

"Seeing what."

"Russell stock. It's down eighteen percent since the market opened. Eighteen, Esme. In forty minutes." A pause. I could hear a television in the background. "There's — okay, there's a video. Someone in the boardroom filmed it. It's everywhere."

"Send it."

She hesitated. "Are you sure?"

"Send it."

The video was thirty-two seconds long. Shaky, filmed from the far end of a conference table, the camera tilted like whoever was holding the phone had forgotten they were holding it.

My father walking into the frame. Not fast. Not slow. The particular walk of a man who had already decided how a thing was going to end.

Aden rising from his chair at the head of the table. That easy smile starting to form — the one he wore for people he thought he could still charm.

My father did not slow down.

The sound of the slap was small on the video. Almost quiet. The kind of sound that shouldn't have carried the weight it did. Aden's head turned with it. His hand came up to his cheek a half-second too late, the way people move when their body is trying to catch up to something their mind hasn't processed yet.

My father's voice came through the phone speaker, low and even.

"Every license. Every patent. Every dollar. Terminated. Effective now."

He turned. He walked out.

Behind him, in the frame, you could see the executives at the table. Not looking at Aden. Looking at their phones. All of them, at the same time, like a wave. The stock ticker on the wall-mounted screen behind Aden's shoulder was already red.

The video ended on Aden's face.

He hadn't moved. His hand was still pressed to his cheek. His mouth was open a little, like he was waiting to be told this wasn't real.

I set the phone down.

My mother was watching me from across the room.

"How do you feel?" she asked softly.

I thought about it.

"Quiet," I said. "I feel quiet."

She nodded, like that was exactly the right answer, and reached again for my hand.
