Chapter 4

By two in the afternoon, the story had a name. Celeste texted it to me in all caps — RUSSELL ENTERPRISES: THE UNRAVELING — a headline some finance blog had slapped over a photo of Aden looking, for once in his life, like a man who hadn't slept.

I didn't read the article. I read the texts instead, because the texts were faster and meaner and closer to the truth.

*Celeste: Dominic just pulled out of the joint venture. This morning. Before lunch.*

*Celeste: He's not returning Aden's calls. Someone saw him at Cipriani an hour ago having drinks with the Kessler people like nothing happened.*

I sat by the window in my mother's sitting room, tea going cold on the little marble table beside me, and I thought about how fast loyalty could evaporate once it stopped being profitable. Dominic had laughed the loudest at the lounge two nights ago. Fifty bucks, he'd said. Bold, he'd said. Now he was drinking scotch with new friends and letting Aden's calls ring out.

*Me: How's he taking it?*

*Celeste: Denial, mostly. Someone at the office said he told his assistant it's a "liquidity blip." Said the board is overreacting. Said you'd come around and none of this would matter.*

I let out a breath through my nose. Not quite a laugh.

He still thought this was about me coming back.

My mother found me there twenty minutes later, standing in the doorway with two cups of tea she'd made fresh, since I hadn't touched the first. She didn't ask what I was reading. She set the cups down, and then she did something that undid me more than any headline could.

She reached out and cupped my face in both hands.

Her palms were cool from holding the ceramic. She just looked at me — really looked, the way you look at a painting you're trying to understand, not the surface of it, but whatever's underneath the brushstrokes. She didn't say anything for a long moment. I felt my throat tighten under the weight of being seen like that, after years of being looked at and not seen at all.

"You don't have to tell me anything," she finally said, thumb brushing once along my cheekbone. "I can see it."

"See what?"

"How long you were alone in that marriage." Her voice cracked on the last word, just slightly, like a hairline fracture in glass. "Even when he was standing right next to you."

I didn't answer. I didn't trust my voice to hold.

She let go of my face, picked up her tea, and sat down across from me like the moment hadn't just happened — like she understood I needed her to move past it quickly, before I fell apart in a room with good lighting and eyes I didn't want anyone using against me later, not even hers.

—

My father came home a little after six, tie loosened, jaw still tight the way it had been since he walked out of that boardroom. He didn't talk about the meeting. He didn't need to — I'd already watched the video four times.

Dinner was set in the small dining room, not the formal one. Mrs. Callahan had made something simple — roast chicken, potatoes, green beans with too much lemon, the way I used to like them as a kid. I noticed the choice. I don't think it was an accident.

We sat. Nobody quite knew where to start.

"The Whitfield deal is dead," my father said finally, cutting into his chicken like it had personally offended him. "Kessler's people are already circling for the pieces. Vultures. Good vultures, though. Smart ones."

"Is that good or bad?" I asked.

"Depends which side of the carcass you're standing on." He looked up at me, and something in his face softened, like he'd caught himself being too much himself. "Sorry. Force of habit."

"It's fine," I said. "I like knowing what's happening to him."

My mother watched me over the rim of her wine glass, careful, assessing, the way she used to watch paintings before deciding whether they belonged in a collection. "Do you? Like knowing?"

I thought about it honestly, because I didn't want to perform an answer for her, not tonight. "I like knowing it's real," I said. "For seven years I don't think I believed anything that happened to me was real. Now I get to watch something real happen to him instead."

Neither of them said anything to that. My father reached for the wine bottle and refilled a glass no one had asked him to refill.

I pushed potatoes around my plate. Ate maybe a third of what was there. My mother noticed — I saw her eyes flick down, then back up — but she didn't say anything, didn't push a fork toward me, didn't do the thing Aden used to do where he'd comment on my appetite like it was a referendum on my gratitude.

She just kept talking. Something about a Rothko exhibit she was trying to bring to the Geneva gallery, some curator drama I only half followed. My father argued with her about the framing budget. It was almost normal. It was almost, unbearably, like being a family.

I sat between them, listening to the clink of silverware and the low current of their voices, and let myself feel, for the first time in longer than I could measure, something close to safe.
