Chapter 1

My captors got careless on night thirty-one.

The padlock on the cellar door wasn't fully clicked shut. I waited until their laughter turned into heavy snores, slipped into the hall, and ran. I ran through thorn bushes and gravel until my bare feet were bloody. At a 24-hour gas station, I begged a trucker for cash and took a cab straight back to Manhattan.

The private elevator opened directly into our penthouse. It was silent. The air conditioning was humming, carrying the scent of white lilies.

Then I noticed another smell. A heavy, sweet vanilla perfume lingered on the sofa cushions. In the marble sink, two crystal flutes sat with dregs of dried champagne.

I walked over to the kitchen island. Calvin’s tablet was resting on the counter, screen glowing with news alerts.

I looked down.

A Page Six headline flashed in bold letters: *The Miracle of the Lawson Family: Presumed-Dead Heiress Lorelei Returns.*

Beneath the title was a full photo spread from two nights ago. My parents, Mitchell and Priscilla, were beaming through tears of joy. And standing beside a fragile, doe-eyed girl was my husband, Calvin Reed. His hand rested firmly on the small of her back, his body angled to shield her from the cameras.

In two years of marriage, Calvin had never touched me like that.

The front door clicked open around midnight. Calvin stepped into the foyer, loosening his silver silk tie. He paused under the hall light when he saw me standing by the island.

His eyes swept over me. He took in my torn sweater, my matted hair, and my hollow cheeks. He did not ask where I had been for thirty-one days. He did not ask why I was limping.

"Lorelei is alive," he said. His voice carried the same flat tone he used for quarterly earnings reports. "She survived abroad. She's staying with your parents in Greenwich."

My voice came out like dry paper. "I saw the news."

"Good," he said, turning toward his study. "Get cleaned up. Mitchell wants a private welcome-home dinner tomorrow night. Don't be late."

He closed the study door.

I walked into the guest bathroom and locked the door behind me. I pulled the first-aid kit from under the sink. My hands didn't shake as I plucked bits of gravel from the open cuts on my knees. I wrapped sterile gauze over the purple rope burns circling my wrists.

I didn't cry. Inside my chest, something gave a quiet, heavy click. Like a heavy iron door locking shut from the inside.

The Lawson dining room was drenched in warm chandelier light the next evening.

Cleo Jenkins—the woman sitting in my sister’s chair—wore ivory cashmere. Every few minutes, she flinched at the sound of silverware, murmuring softly about dark rooms and bad dreams.

My mother, Priscilla, stroked her knuckles continuously. "You're safe now, my sweet angel," she cooed. My father poured wine with hands that trembled from relief.

Calvin sat directly beside Cleo. He watched her with a fierce, quiet tenderness. It was the exact gaze I had spent two years begging for in empty bedrooms.

Nobody asked why I wore long sleeves to cover my wrists.

"Aspen?" Cleo said in a tiny, trembling voice. "Could you pass the bisque, please?"

I reached for the heavy silver tureen. As our fingers brushed, Cleo suddenly jerked her elbow. The bowl flipped. Boiling lobster soup cascaded straight down my bare forearm.

The heat seared into my skin. I drew a sharp breath, teeth grinding together.

"Oh!" Cleo wailed, pulling her hands to her chest. Tears spilled over her lashes instantly. "I'm so clumsy! I'm so sorry! Did I burn the table?"

"Oh, darling, let me see your hands!" my mother gasped. She shoved her chair back, completely ignoring me, and rushed to inspect Cleo’s fingers.

Calvin grabbed a linen napkin from the table. He thrust it blindly in my direction, his eyes never leaving Cleo’s trembling face.

"Put ice on it," he told me flatly.

I took the cloth. I pressed it against my blistered skin. The pain flared white-hot, but I didn't flinch. I looked across the table, met Cleo's tearful eyes, and smiled.

"It's fine," I said quietly. "The soup is wonderful."

That was the night I stopped reacting. I started watching.

Over the next two weeks, Cleo’s playbook was flawless. She staged breathy panic attacks whenever Calvin prepared to leave a room. She deliberately loosened a bronze sconce in the hallway so she could swoon right into his arms when it rattled. She whispered to Priscilla that I seemed cold and resentful of her miracle.

One afternoon, Cleo caught me alone in the conservatory.

Her soft, trembling victim routine vanished. She stepped in close, reached down, and clamped her fingers hard over the fresh burn on my arm. She squeezed until my vision swam.

Her smile was sweet as poison. "I'm so glad we're sisters again, Aspen."

I stared into her eyes. My pulse stayed slow and steady.

"Me too," I whispered.

Three nights later, Calvin took the two of us to an exclusive dining club in Midtown to introduce "Lorelei" to his executive board.

Halfway through the second course, the fire alarm screamed.

A thick wall of black smoke billowed from the kitchen doors. Within seconds, the room turned into a stampede. Crystal shattered. Chairs tipped over.

Calvin didn't look my way.

In a single fluid motion, he swept Cleo up into his arms, tucked her face against his chest, and used his broad shoulders to plow through the panicked crowd toward the private VIP exit.

He left me in the booth.

The air turned hot and toxic. I dropped to my knees, choking on acrid soot. I crawled along the velvet banquette, keeping low, feeling my way through the dark until my hands hit the push-bar of an emergency exit.

I tumbled out onto the wet sidewalk of 54th Street, coughing violently, my evening gown smeared in black ash.

A few feet away under the awning, Calvin was wrapping his tailored suit jacket around Cleo's shoulders.

He turned his head. His eyes met mine through the drifting smoke. He registered that I was standing upright on my own two feet.

Then he looked away and guided Cleo toward the waiting town car.

We rode home without a single word.

Late that night, I went into my walk-in closet. I reached behind the shoe racks and pulled out my secret leather-bound journal. For two years, I had filled its pages with desperate notes, tracking the things he liked, begging for a scrap of his love.

I turned to a blank page.

I picked up the pen and wrote three words:

*He didn't look.*
