My Husband Believed the Woman Who Kidnapped Me

On night thirty-one, the cellar padlock never fully clicked. She waited until her captors' laughter faded into snores, then ran barefoot through thorns and gravel until her feet bled. At a gas station, she begged a trucker for cash and rode a cab into Manhattan. The private elevator opened onto their penthouse. Silence. The air conditioning hummed, carrying white lilies. Then she caught it—a heavy, sweet vanilla perfume clinging to the sofa cushions. Her husband had believed the woman who kidnapped her. Now she must face the scent of betrayal and how deep the lie runs.

Chapter 2

I didn’t go to the Reed Enterprises annual gala.

For two years, I had stood at Calvin’s side in stiff designer gowns, playing the dutiful billionaire wife. But that girl was gone. I stayed home in the quiet penthouse, curled up on the sofa in an oversized sweater.

By ten o’clock, my phone began buzzing non-stop.

Socialite group chats were lighting up. Leaked video clips flooded my feed.

The video showed the grand ballroom at the Plaza. Cleo stood near the center in a pale blue silk gown, clutching a glass of water. Nora Blythe and three other old-money heiresses had circled her.

One of the women tipped her glass. A splash of vintage Dom Pérignon soaked the front of Cleo’s dress.

Cleo gasped, her lower lip trembling. The heiresses didn't care. Nora’s voice rang out, sharp and mocking.

“You really think putting on Lawson pearls makes you one of us?” Nora sneered. “You’re just a stray charity case riding a dead girl’s name.”

The camera jerked toward the crowd. Calvin was already moving across the marble floor. His stride was long and purposeful, his jaw set like stone. He was coming to rescue his miracle.

Then Nora spotted him. She didn't back down. She raised her voice so everyone around could hear.

“Look at you, Calvin,” Nora laughed. “At least the other Lawson girl had the dignity to stop showing up.”

Calvin froze mid-step.

The camera caught his face. The cold, controlled CEO mask vanished. His eyes went dead and wild all at once.

He didn't look at Cleo. He didn't look at Nora.

In a sudden, volcanic fury, Calvin lunged forward. He swung his right arm and slammed his bare fist straight into the center of the seven-tier champagne tower.

The crystal exploded.

A deafening crash echoed through the speakers. Shards of glass and amber liquid rained over the velvet carpet. Women shrieked and scrambled backward. The screen shook, then cut out.

Around midnight, the penthouse elevator chimed.

Calvin walked into the foyer. His tuxedo jacket was gone. His white shirt was soaked in champagne and smeared with streaks of red. His head of security, Derek Hale, followed closely behind him, carrying a silver medical case.

Calvin’s right hand was wrapped in thick white gauze. Dark blood was already seeping through the bandages.

He didn't look at me. He walked straight past the living room, entered his study, and shut the heavy mahogany door.

Derek lingered by the foyer console. He set down the extra rolls of gauze and looked over at me.

“Mrs. Reed,” Derek said quietly.

I kept my hands wrapped around my mug of tea. “Is he all right?”

“Six stitches across the knuckles,” Derek answered in a low voice. He glanced toward the closed study door, then back to me. “The press thinks he lost his temper over Miss Lorelei. But I was standing five feet away.”

I met Derek’s eyes.

“His temper didn't flare until Nora said your name,” Derek said. “He didn't care about the insults to Cleo. He broke that glass because you weren't there.”

I looked down at my tea. The surface was perfectly still.

“Thank you for bandaging him, Derek,” I said smoothly. “Good night.”

Derek hesitated, then gave a stiff nod and took the elevator down. Calvin did not leave his study for the rest of the night. The penthouse stayed tomb-silent.

The next afternoon, the mail sat on the foyer table.

On top of the stack was a glossy booklet with heavy gold lettering: *The Hamptons Charity Rally*.

I opened the catalogue and idly turned the pages. Halfway through, my hands went completely rigid.

There, on page twelve, was a full-page photo of the grand prize.

It was an antique platinum brooch shaped like an ivy leaf, centered with a pale, glowing emerald.

My breath trapped in my throat.

It was my Grandmother Lawson’s brooch.

When she died six years ago, she had whispered in my ear that the brooch was mine. But after the funeral, my parents told me it had been lost in the estate transition. They lied. They had sold it off to an elite private collector. And now it was sitting in a charity showcase as a prize for wealthy racers.

I walked into Calvin’s study to put down his letters.

On his blotter lay a completed registration form for the rally. His sharp signature was already inked at the bottom.

Pinned to the corner was a pastel sticky note in Cleo’s loopy handwriting: *Calvin, that vintage ivy brooch is so pretty. It would match my eyes. Win it for me?*

A cold, hard knot formed in my chest.

Calvin was going to take the only piece of my grandmother’s love left in this world and hand it to a stranger.

I pulled a blank entry form from the back of the catalogue.

My pen didn't shake. I filled in my details. I used my maiden name: *Aspen Lawson*. I pulled out my phone, accessed my private savings account, and wired the steep entry fee directly to the event committee.

For the next three days, my alarm went off at four in the morning.

While Calvin slept in the primary bedroom and Cleo rested at my parents' estate, I slipped out into the biting dark. I took the subway to Queens, picked up a beat-up manual coupe from a discount rental lot, and drove out to an abandoned private road on Long Island.

I taped the Hamptons rally track map to the dashboard.

I studied every hairpin turn. I memorized every elevation drop and asphalt patch.

In the predawn fog, I kicked the clutch and slammed the gearstick into third. The engine wailed. The tires screamed against the damp asphalt as I drifted through the curves, hitting sixty, seventy, eighty miles per hour.

My hands gripped the wheel until my knuckles turned pale.

Calvin thought I was broken. Cleo thought I was erased.

They had no idea what was coming.
