Chapter 1

The Hamptons house smelled like sunscreen and buttercream frosting. A hundred and forty people stood on my lawn, drinking rosé out of plastic flutes shaped like champagne glasses, because Rylan had insisted the birthday be "fancy but fun." There was a pony named Biscuit tied to the pergola. There was a three-tier cake with a fondant dinosaur riding a skateboard. I stood in the middle of it, in a white sundress, and thought, I did this. I built this happy, ordinary day.

My husband, Trace Palmer, had his phone up the whole time, narrating like a sportscaster. "Big man is five! Five years old, buddy!" Rylan shrieked and ran through the sprinkler in his swim trunks, gold hair flat against his forehead, and I laughed because it was impossible not to. He had my mother's chin, or so I always told myself. Amazing, the things you convince yourself of when you love someone enough.

Colette Bell found me by the dessert table around three. Colette had been my best friend for twenty-five years — since a bathroom in tenth grade, since a group of girls circling me like sharks and her stepping in like a bodyguard. I loved her the uncomplicated way you love a sister. She was holding a gift bag full of small white boxes.

"Party favor," she said, handing them out to the mothers standing near us. "Novelty DNA kits. You spit in a tube, it tells you if you're secretly twelve percent Neanderthal. It's stupid. It's hilarious. Everyone's doing them by the pool."

Then she turned to me and pulled a small velvet box from her bag. Inside was a charm bracelet, my initials engraved on the clasp, delicate gold links, and one charm shaped like a tiny locked box.

"That one opens," she said, smiling. "A little mystery for the woman who has everything."

I put it on right there. I told her it was beautiful. I meant it.

Around four, my earring backing slipped loose, and I went upstairs to fix it in the marble bathroom off the guest suite. That's when my thumbnail caught the edge of that little locked charm and it popped open easier than it should have — like it had been opened before, and closed in a hurry.

Inside was a folded piece of paper, so small I almost didn't unfold it. A lab report. A DNA result. Case number, date, two sample IDs. I didn't understand it yet. I just knew Colette hadn't meant to give it to me — you don't hide something inside a locked charm on purpose and then hand it to the person it's about.

Downstairs, through the open window, I could hear the mothers by the pool laughing about a Reddit thread. "Ashford Fertility Institute," one of them said. "They're saying babies got switched. Actual embryos. Can you imagine?" Someone else said, "That's Trace and Evangeline's clinic, isn't it?" and they all laughed like it was gossip, like it was nothing.

I pulled up the thread on my phone with hands that had gone strangely calm. Case numbers. A whistleblower nurse. A list of dates that included the exact week I'd been sedated on a table with my knees in stirrups, told to relax, told this would only take a few minutes.

I matched the case number on the crumpled report to the numbers on the thread. Then I matched the date to Rylan's conception window. Ninety seconds. That's all it took. Ninety seconds to understand that the boy running through the sprinkler downstairs, the boy with my mother's chin, wasn't mine. That he was Trace's. And Colette's.

I made it to the toilet before I was sick. I rinsed my mouth at the sink, and looked at myself in the mirror — same woman, same white dress, same pearl studs — and reapplied my lipstick with a hand that did not shake. That was the first thing I learned about myself that day. My hands don't shake. Not even then.

I went back downstairs in time for the cake.

I knelt beside Rylan while Trace filmed and Colette dabbed at happy tears with a cocktail napkin, and I helped my son — I still called him that, in my head, because I didn't know yet how else to think of him — blow out five candles. Everyone clapped. Someone said, "Make a wish, baby!" I smiled the whole time. Not one muscle in my face slipped.

After the last car pulled out of the gravel drive that night, I sat alone at the kitchen table with the lab report smoothed flat in front of me and the leather notebook I'd carried in every handbag since college. I wrote, in the private shorthand no one else could read: *He is five. In fifteen years he inherits everything. Give it to him.*

Then I called Kara Tucker, my assistant of twenty years, the only person I trusted enough to wake up at midnight. And after her, I dialed a number an old family accountant had once given me, for a lawyer named Louie Henderson, who — I'd been told — never lost, and never asked questions.

By three in the morning, I had wired a retainer and opened the first of what would become eleven shell trusts. The house was dark. The pony was gone. My son was asleep upstairs, in a room I had painted myself, dreaming whatever five-year-olds dream.

I sat in the quiet a long time before I turned off the light.
