Chapter 2

I found the receipt on a Tuesday.

Trace's charcoal jacket was on the back of the dining chair, and I was only reaching for his dry cleaning when the paper slid out of the inside pocket and landed face-up on the floor. The Carlyle. A junior suite. Two nights, the week before, when he'd told me he was in Chicago for the Whitfield deal.

I stood there holding it for a long moment. My chest did something strange, a kind of drop, like missing a stair in the dark. But my hands didn't shake. I noticed that, even then. I folded the receipt along its own crease and put it back exactly where I found it, pocket flap tucked the same careless way.

That evening I went to the jeweler on Madison and bought him cufflinks, gold, engraved with his initials on the inside curve where only he would ever see them. Four hundred and twenty dollars. When I gave them to him at dinner, he turned them over in his fingers and grinned like a boy.

"What's this for?"

"Do I need a reason to spoil my husband?" I said, and refilled his wine.

He kissed my temple. "You're too good to me, Evie."

"I know," I said, smiling into my glass.

That night, in the bathroom, door locked, water running so it would look like I was just brushing my teeth a long time, I opened the little leather notebook and wrote it down in my shorthand. Date. Hotel. Room type. Cost of cufflinks. First entry. I looked at it for a while before I closed the cover. It didn't feel like grief anymore. It felt like inventory.

Kara called me two days later from a number I didn't recognize.

"New phone," she said, before I could ask. "Burner. I'm going to start talking to Marjorie Vance at brunch on Thursdays. She tells Colette everything by Friday morning, I've timed it."

"Tell her what?"

"That you cried in the car after the Whitfield gala because Trace forgot your anniversary was coming up. That Montgomery's overleveraged on the Chelsea property and you're scared to bring it up with your father. That you haven't made a real decision without Trace signing off on it in years."

I walked to the window. Below, a nanny pushed a stroller past the Rylan's play structure I'd had installed the spring before, cedar and rope netting, four thousand dollars, because he'd wanted one like his friend Beckett's.

"All of it's a lie," I said.

"That's the point," Kara said. "You want her to think you're soft clay. Soft clay doesn't get watched."

I thought about Colette's face at Rylan's party, dabbing her eyes with a cocktail napkin while I helped my son — her son — blow out candles. "Do it," I said.

Colette called me that Friday, right on schedule, voice warm as bathwater. "I heard you had a rough week, sweetheart. You should have called me."

"I didn't want to bother you," I said. "You always have so much going on."

"Never too much for you," she said. "Never."

I closed my eyes and let the silence stretch just half a second too long, the way a fragile woman might, gathering herself. "You're the only one I can really talk to," I said.

She made a small, satisfied sound, like a cat settling into a warm patch of sun. She believed every word. That was the gift of her — she had spent twenty-five years believing her own performance so completely that she couldn't recognize mine.

The pharmacy happened on a Saturday in October. I'd taken Rylan to pick up sunscreen and a prescription refill, and he tugged my sleeve at the toy aisle, pointing at a plastic dinosaur that roared when you squeezed its tail.

"Mama, can I have that one?"

I looked at the shelf. Six more just like it, plus a whole row of others — trucks, robots, a stuffed bear with a felt heart. Six years old, standing in fluorescent light, waiting to find out what wanting something cost.

"You can have all of them," I said.

His face lit up first, that pure, animal joy kids have before they learn to be suspicious of easy things. Then, as the cashier rang up armful after armful, something in his expression clouded. He looked at the growing pile like it had stopped being his.

"I only wanted the dinosaur," he said quietly, in the car, staring at the bags in his lap like they'd multiplied without his permission.

"I know, baby," I said, watching the road. "Now you have everything."

He didn't answer. He just picked up the dinosaur, squeezed its tail once, listened to it roar, and set it down on top of the pile like it was no different from the rest.

That night I wrote the receipt total in my notebook. Underneath it, in my shorthand, I added one line. *He can't tell wanting from having anymore. Good. Keep going.*

I closed the notebook and turned off the light, and somewhere down the hall, the boy who wasn't mine slept surrounded by things he no longer remembered asking for.
