Chapter 4

Adrian stared at the paper.

"Vancouver to Montreal," he muttered, the glossy boarding pass shaking slightly in his grip. He didn't look at my face. His eyes stayed glued to the flight details. "Tomorrow morning."

"Brooke’s partners are finishing their entrees right now," Adrian said, his tone dropping into a harsh, urgent whisper. "There are twelve people out there, Claire. Who is going to clean up the after-dinner mess?"

The question hung in the warm, spice-scented air.

Not why are you leaving. Not how long will you be gone.

Just the mess.

"The dishwasher is empty," I replied.

"That is not an answer." He slapped the ticket down on the granite island. "I need you to plate the pie. The partners expect a flawless evening. You cannot abandon the kitchen during a dinner party."

"I am not abandoning the kitchen," I said. I picked up the boarding pass and slid it into my apron pocket. "I am abandoning the house."

Adrian scoffed, a short, ugly sound. "Stop being dramatic. You are throwing a tantrum because Brooke took credit for a map."

I didn't argue. I turned my back to him and walked to the pantry. I crouched down, grabbed the gray plastic file box from the bottom shelf, and carried it out. I dropped it onto the island. The heavy plastic slammed against the stone.

"What are you doing?" Lucas demanded, taking a step back.

I pulled the lid off the box. I walked over to the refrigerator, peeled the magnetic weekly chore chart off the stainless steel door, and tossed it inside. It hit the bottom with a sharp clatter.

Next, I opened the top drawer of the desk and pulled out the thick blue folder containing the home insurance policies. I dropped that in, too.

"Mom, seriously, stop it," Lucas groaned. He crossed his arms, his Stanford blazer pulling tight across his chest. "Are you really doing this right now? You’re using silence to punish us again. It’s so passive-aggressive."

"I am speaking perfectly clearly," I said. I grabbed a small black notebook from the drawer. "These are the passwords for the grocery delivery, the utility accounts, and the property tax portal."

I tossed the notebook into the gray box.

"This is the medical file," I added, dropping a red folder on top. "Your allergy records, Lucas. Your father's cholesterol prescriptions. You missed your last refill, Adrian."

"Stop this," Adrian demanded, his face flushing.

"This is the warranty for the oven you don't know how to turn on," I said, tossing a folded manual inside.

"You handle the accounts," Adrian said, his voice tightening. "You always handle the household."

"Not anymore." I pushed the box across the granite. It slid smoothly, stopping mere inches from Adrian’s hands. "The household runs from this box. You and Brooke are a team now. You can manage it."

I reached around my waist, untied the hard knot of the white linen apron, and let the fabric fall to the floor.

I walked out of the kitchen and into the mudroom. My two hard-shell suitcases sat waiting in the shadows. I had packed them yesterday afternoon, right after I found the Stanford essay draft on Lucas's desk.

I grabbed the handles. The wheels rumbled loudly against the hardwood floor as I dragged them out.

Adrian followed me, panic finally bleeding into his anger. "Claire, put those away. The partners will hear you."

"Let them hear," I said.

I bypassed the hallway and wheeled the suitcases straight into the dining room.

Brooke sat at the head of the long mahogany table. A dark red wine stain soaked into the white linen tablecloth right next to her elbow. She had tipped her glass earlier. Yesterday, I would have rushed out of the kitchen with club soda and a microfiber cloth, apologizing for the interruption while I scrubbed her mess.

Today, I just stared at the spreading crimson puddle. I didn't move toward it.

Next to the stain sat a stack of fine porcelain dessert plates, waiting to be distributed. The center bore the words Bennett Family.

"You forgot your plates," Adrian hissed, stepping up close behind me.

"They say Bennett Family," I replied evenly. "My name is Claire Moreau."

I didn't pack them. I didn't want them.

Brooke stood up, smoothing the front of her emerald silk dress. She forced a bright, artificial smile for her partners before turning a hard glare on me.

"Claire, this is highly inappropriate," Brooke said. "We are hosting an important dinner."

"You are hosting," I corrected her.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my keyring. I slid the heavy brass key to the Richmond house off the metal loop. It jingled sharply in the quiet room.

I walked over to the table. An empty silver place card holder sat right next to Brooke’s wine glass. I wedged the brass key into the clip.

"Starting tomorrow, all living arrangements are your own responsibility," I announced. I didn't raise my voice, but the words carried perfectly across the silent room. "The mortgage is paid through the end of the month. The groceries will run out by Tuesday."

Adrian stared at the key. His confidence finally cracked, replaced by a sudden, frantic realization.

"Claire, you cannot just walk out," Adrian said, his voice rising. "Who is going to manage Lucas's schedule? Who is going to handle the contractors for the roof repair tomorrow morning?"

He didn't care that his wife was leaving. He cared that the machine had stopped working. The invisible labor he mocked was suddenly staring him in the face.

"Brooke handles millions at her firm," I said, glancing at the woman. "I am sure she can handle a roofer."

Lucas pushed his way through the swinging kitchen door. He stood near the threshold, holding a silver dessert fork in his right hand. He looked from the suitcases to the brass key on the table.

"Mom, stop embarrassing us," Lucas snapped, his face pale.

"You wanted pedigree, Lucas," I said, meeting his gaze. "You have it. Brooke can fund your robotics team openly now. You don't need my secret transfers anymore."

Brooke flinched. Her artificial smile vanished. "What transfers?"

"Ask your mentor," I told Lucas.

I turned around and grabbed my luggage handles.

"Claire!" Adrian shouted, abandoning his quiet tone entirely. "If you walk out that door, do not expect me to pay for your return ticket. You will come crawling back when you realize you have nothing!"

"I bought a one-way," I reminded him. "With my own money."

I pushed the suitcases forward.

The wheels hit the metal threshold between the dining room and the foyer. A dull, heavy thud echoed through the space.

I didn't look back. I kept walking toward the front door.

Lucas stood completely frozen by the doorway. He raised the silver fork halfway to his mouth, a nervous, automatic gesture.

Then, he stopped.

The metal hovered just inches from his lips.

His Adam’s apple bobbed once.

Then twice.

He opened his mouth, but the word Mom never came out.
