Chapter 5

The image of Lucas frozen in the dining room doorway followed me all the way to Vancouver International. His mouth had hung open, the word Mom dying on his tongue, the silver dessert fork trembling in his grip.

Now, the harsh fluorescent lights of the departure terminal buzzed overhead, a stark contrast to the warm chandelier of the house I had just abandoned. Travelers rushed past with rolling luggage, their voices blending into a dull roar.

I handed my dark blue passport to the ticketing agent.

"One checked bag for Montreal," I told the woman behind the counter.

"Mom! Stop!"

A hand slammed flat onto the metal counter, pinning my passport beneath a crumpled sheet of paper.

I turned.

Lucas stood panting, his Stanford prep blazer wrinkled, sweat shining on his forehead. He must have sprinted all the way from the parking garage.

"You cannot leave yet," he demanded, catching his breath. "I need your signature."

I stared at the document trapping my passport.

Stanford University - Community Project Verification.

My eyes scanned the printed lines.

Total Hours: 214.

Primary Supervisor: Brooke Sterling.

"You drove all the way to the airport for this?" I asked.

"The portal closes at midnight," Lucas said. He shoved a black pen toward my chest. "Brooke already signed her section digitally. The admissions office flagged it because the sponsor IP address didn't match our residential address."

"So they want proof," I said.

"They just need a secondary witness." He tapped the bottom corner of the page. "Right there. Sign under Family Assistant."

My fingers curled into my palms. The nails dug sharp into my skin.

"Family Assistant," I repeated.

"Brooke is the primary," Lucas insisted. "She is the mentor on record. You just drove the carpool and bought the snacks. That counts as assistance."

"I built the robotics team," I said. "I funded the outreach program. I sat in the freezing garage for two hundred and fourteen hours while you coded. I have a burn scar on my left wrist from the soldering iron you dropped."

"We talked about this!" Lucas groaned, running a hand through his hair. "Brooke has the law firm letterhead! It validates the project!"

"It validates a lie."

"It gets me into college!"

A heavy hand landed on Lucas’s shoulder.

Adrian stepped up to the counter, his suit jacket unbuttoned, his tie loose. He didn't look frantic. He looked furious.

"Sign the paper, Claire," Adrian ordered.

I pulled my passport out from under the form. I looked down at the twelve-year-old cover. The gold crest was rubbed thin, the edges frayed from a decade of being shoved into desk drawers while I prioritized their lives. I flipped it open. The pages were completely empty. No visas. No entry stamps. Twelve years of erasing myself so they could travel, so they could shine, so they could build their perfect resumes.

"No," I said.

I grabbed my boarding pass from the confused ticketing agent and turned toward the security gates.

Adrian moved faster. He stepped directly into my path, blocking the entrance to the airport security line.

"Move, Adrian," I warned.

"You are not walking away from your son," he said, planting his feet firmly on the polished tile. "Not when his entire future depends on one signature."

"His future depends on his own merit."

"Do not play the moral high ground." Adrian pointed a finger at my face. "You are throwing a tantrum over a title. Brooke is willing to leverage her entire professional network for him. She is stepping up. You are just being petty."

"I am setting a boundary."

"You are abandoning him."

I glanced up at the digital departure screen hanging above the security line.

Flight 07:10 - YUL - Gate Closing in 23 Minutes.

"Twenty-three minutes," I said. "That is how long you have."

Lucas frowned. "How long I have for what?"

"Cross out Brooke’s name," I told him. "Write my name on the supervisor line. Tell the admissions board the truth about who funded your team. If you do that, I will sign."

Lucas stared at me like I had lost my mind.

"Are you crazy?" he shouted, drawing the attention of passing travelers. "I already submitted the essay! If I change the supervisor name now, they will know I lied on the personal statement. They will reject my application entirely!"

"Then you face the consequences of your lie."

"You are trying to ruin my life!"

"I stood in the freezing rain loading those robotics kits into the trunk," I said, my voice steady but tight. "I skipped meals to make sure the entry fees were paid on time. You didn't even know what a servo motor was until I bought you the manual."

"And Brooke got the mayor to attend our final showcase!" Lucas shot back. "That is what Stanford cares about, Mom! They don't care who drove the carpool!"

"I am trying to teach you what a mother actually does," I countered. "A mother does not cover up your fraud."

Adrian snatched the verification form from the counter.

"She is bluffing," Adrian told Lucas. He turned his glare on me. "You spent twelve years building this family. You sold your apartment in Montreal to pay the down payment on our house. You poured everything into us. You are not going to throw all of that away just to prove a point."

"The house belongs to Brooke now," I reminded him. "She can pay the property tax."

"Stop talking about Brooke!" Adrian snapped. "This is about Lucas. This is your child. If you walk through that security gate without signing this form, you are proving you never cared about him at all. You are proving you are exactly as selfish as I always thought."

"You think running away makes you a martyr?" Adrian sneered. "It just makes you a coward. You couldn't handle the pressure of Brooke outperforming you, so you are punishing your own son."

"Brooke stole my work," I said. "And now she is stealing my son's integrity."

I looked at Lucas.

He didn't defend me. He didn't tell his father to stop. He just held out the pen, his eyes hard and expectant.

He wanted the Family Assistant signature. Nothing else.

The boarding screen flashed yellow.

Gate Closing in 21 Minutes.

"Change the name, Lucas," I offered one last time. "Cross out Brooke Sterling. Write Claire Moreau."

"No," Lucas said, his jaw locked. "Brooke is the reason the project looks prestigious."

"Adrian?" I asked. "Are you going to let him submit a fraudulent application?"

"I am going to let him win," Adrian replied flatly. "Something you never understood."

Adrian stepped closer. He reached out and grabbed my boarding pass right out of my hand.

"Hey!" I shouted.

He slammed the boarding pass against the metal counter, right next to the verification form. He pressed his palm flat over both pieces of paper.

"This is the end of the line, Claire," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a cold, absolute threat. "You want to play hardball? Fine."

He tapped the signature line on the university document.

"Sign Brooke's name," Adrian demanded. "Or board that plane and leave Lucas's life right now."
