Chapter 2

We met at a small bistro tucked away on a cobblestone street in the West Village.

Outside, a gray drizzle slicked the pavement. The bistro had no floor-to-ceiling windows. There were no bright signs or influencers snapping photos of their brunch. It was just low booths, dark wood, and exposed brick. It was quiet. Nobody looked twice at anyone else.

Odin was already there. He sat in the farthest corner booth with his back to the wall. He wore a charcoal suit, perfectly tailored across his broad shoulders. Between his long fingers, a vintage silver fountain pen spun in a slow, steady circle.

He looked just as sharp as I remembered, but harder. Six years in courtrooms had carved away whatever softness he had in college.

When I slid into the booth across from him, his fingers stopped. The pen rested on the napkin. His dark eyes flicked over my face, noticing the shadow under my eyes and the pale tint of my skin.

"Harper," he said. His voice was low and steady.

"Odin." My throat felt tight.

I didn't waste time on pleasantries. We weren't college sweethearts catching up over coffee. I pulled my phone from my purse, unlocked it, and slid it across the dark wood table.

"Look at the photos," I whispered.

Odin picked up the phone. His thumb swiped across the screen.

First, the Mount Sinai header. Stage IV gastric adenocarcinoma. Terminal.

Then, the life insurance policy. Five million dollars. Blake Knight, fifty percent. Sutton Herrera, fifty percent.

A heavy silence fell between us. The air smelled of roasted garlic and damp wool from outside.

Then, I started talking. The words spilled out in short, ragged bursts.

I told him about the last three years. I told him how Blake convinced me I carried a cursed aura that poisoned everything I touched. I told him about the "spiritual advisor" Blake hired—a man named Marco Herrera.

"I ran a background search on Marco yesterday," I said, my knuckles turning white against the edge of the table. "He’s Sutton’s first cousin. He doesn't read auras. He runs a failing auto-body shop in Queens."

Odin didn't make a sound. He just kept listening.

"Every bad thing was staged," I continued. "The flat tires. The ruined deals. The broken pipes in the basement. Blake used Marco to tell me it was my toxic energy. He told me the only way to cleanse the curse was to transfer my savings into his name. My inheritance. My mother's trust fund. I gave him everything, Odin. Because I thought I was protecting him."

I touched my bare ring finger. The skin there was still slightly indented from the wedding band I had stopped wearing that morning.

"He took my money. Now he wants the insurance payout. They’re going to kill me."

The bistro around us went dead silent. The faint clatter of silverware from the kitchen sounded miles away.

Odin set my phone down. He picked up his silver fountain pen again, pressing the tip against the wooden grain. A muscle ticked along his sharp jawline. It was the only crack in his calm mask.

"We're going to bury him," Odin said. His voice was flat, cold, and absolute. "Legally. Without giving him a single crack to crawl through."

"He has all my money," I said. "He has the house. The accounts are in his name."

"He has paper, Harper. But you have the element of surprise." Odin leaned forward. His presence filled the small booth, solid and unyielding. "Blake thinks you're broken. He thinks you're sitting at home waiting for his permission to breathe. That arrogance is his biggest weakness."

He clicked his pen.

"Here is what we do," Odin said. "Rule number one: New York is a one-party-consent state."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you can legally record any conversation you are part of. You don't need his permission. You only need your own."

Odin reached into his coat pocket and slid a small flash drive across the table.

"Download the encrypted audio app on that drive," he instructed. "Keep your phone in your pocket or face up on the counter. Set it to auto-sync to a private cloud server I manage. If he talks about Sutton, record it. If he mentions your health, record it. Every word out of his mouth becomes our ammunition."

"What about the forged medical files in his desk?" I asked.

"Leave them," Odin said firmly. "Do not take them. If they disappear, he knows you know. When a rat realizes the trap is set, he gets reckless. He might accelerate his timeline. We need him confident."

He looked straight into my eyes.

"That brings us to the hardest part," Odin said softly. "The performance."

"The performance?"

"You have to stay his obedient wife. If he tells you to burn sage, you burn it. If he tells you your aura is heavy, you look at the floor and apologize. Feed his ego. Let him think the con is working until the very second we pull the rug out from under his feet."

A cold thrill settled deep in my stomach.

For three years, I had apologized for existing. I had played the quiet, guilty victim because I loved him. Playing the victim to destroy him would be easy.

"I can do that," I said. My voice didn't waver.

Odin's hand moved slightly toward mine on the table. For a second, his fingers brushed against the tips of mine. His skin was warm. He pulled back just enough to keep it professional, but his gaze remained locked on me.

"I know you can," he said quietly. "You survived him alone for three years. You're not alone anymore."
