Chapter 3

For three days, I played the fool.

It was surprisingly easy. When Blake told me my "energy spiral" was giving him a headache, I lowered my eyes. I apologized. When he burned white sage and waved the smoke in my face, I stood still and coughed quietly.

Underneath my sweater, my phone was recording every single breath.

On Wednesday evening, I brought up his father’s medical bills at dinner. "Blake, the clinic in New Jersey sent another invoice. Can we look over the accounts tonight?"

Blake slammed his fork down. The silver clattered against the porcelain plate.

"Don't obsess over numbers, Harper," he snapped, his voice sharp and dismissive. "Francis is fighting for his life, and you're counting pennies. Negative thoughts attract debt. You’re poisoning the house again."

"I just wanted to help," I whispered.

"Then be quiet and let me handle the money," he said. He picked up his wine glass, completely relaxed again.

My phone captured every syllable. The file automatically uploaded to Odin’s secure cloud.

The real prize came on Thursday night.

Blake thought I was asleep. Around midnight, I heard his quiet footsteps in the hallway. He stepped into his home office and left the door cracked an inch. I slipped out of bed, barefoot on the cold wood floor, and pressed my phone against the doorframe.

He had Sutton on speaker.

"He's asleep," Blake whispered. "Listen, we need to wrap things up with Harper soon. Francis's fake treatments are getting hard to juggle."

Sutton's voice came through, cool and sharp. "Don't get sloppy, Blake. Did you check the policy's contestability period?"

"What about it?"

"If she dies before the two-year mark, the insurance company investigates every detail," Sutton said coldly. "They look at medical files. They look at bank trails. We wait until the window clears, or we don't see a single cent of that five million. Understand?"

"Fine," Blake muttered. "Just pick out the dress for tomorrow. My card has plenty of room."

They were talking about my death like a business transaction. My chest felt hollow, but my hand never shook. I saved the audio file. I sent a copy to Odin with a simple text: *Got it.*

His reply came back three seconds later: *Airtight. Stay safe. Tomorrow, we cut the cord.*

On Friday morning, I went to Midtown.

The Chase Manhattan flagship branch on Park Avenue was quiet and smelled of polished marble and crisp paper. I sat across from a senior accounts manager.

"I need to revoke all supplementary card privileges," I said calmly. "Immediately."

The manager adjusted his glasses. "All of them, Mrs. Knight? Your husband has three cards tied to your primary trust."

"Cancel them all," I said. "Remove him as an authorized user. Freeze every joint spending account. I want stamped, dated copies of the paperwork."

I signed my name six times. Crisp, black ink.

The clock on the wall read eleven-fifteen. Blake had bragged over breakfast about a "networking lunch" in SoHo. But I had checked his calendar on the shared tablet. He was meeting Sutton at Maison Vane, an exclusive couture boutique on Greene Street, to buy her a twelve-thousand-dollar runway gown.

With my money.

After the bank, I took a yellow cab downtown. I didn't want to miss the show.

I sat in a small coffee shop directly across the street from Maison Vane. The boutique had floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The view was unobstructed.

Inside, Blake stood near the marble register. He wore his tailored navy blazer, looking every inch the wealthy Manhattan husband. Sutton stood beside him in a beige trench coat, running her fingers over a rack of silk. A sales associate in a black dress carried a stunning crimson evening gown toward the counter.

Blake smiled smoothly. He pulled his black American Express card from his leather wallet and handed it over.

The sales associate swiped it.

She paused. She looked at the terminal screen, typed something, and swiped it again. Then she looked up, her expression turning into polite stone.

Even through the window, I saw Blake’s smile falter.

He pulled out his silver card. The backup card.

The woman swiped it. The machine beeped, a sharp red light blinking on the screen. Declined.

Blake tried a third card. Declined again.

Blake’s face turned bright red. His left hand immediately flew to his wrist, his fingers frantically twisting his gold Rolex. Left, right, left. It was his tell. Whenever Blake was trapped, he twisted that watch.

The sales associate said something, her arms folding across her chest. Sutton’s sweet, practiced smile vanished completely. Her eyes narrowed into hard, venomous slits as she glared at Blake. She stepped back, crossing her arms, letting him drown in the silence of the store.

Blake stammered something, pointed at his phone, and practically shoved open the glass door of the boutique.

He burst out onto the cobblestone sidewalk, running a hand through his hair. He jammed his phone to his ear, pacing back and forth right in front of my cafe window.

I took a slow sip of my iced coffee.

I knew who he was calling. The Chase priority line. And I knew exactly what the automated system and the teller were telling him.

*We apologize, Mr. Knight. All supplementary card access has been revoked by the primary account holder.*

*Her name is Harper Miller.*

Outside, Blake pulled the phone from his ear. His jaw dropped. His face went from bright red to dead, ghostly white.

A second later, the phone on my cafe table began to buzz.

*Blake Knight.*

I watched him stare wildly up and down the street from behind my sunglasses. Then, with a slow, steady smile, I declined the call.
