Chapter 1

It was an ordinary Tuesday evening when my life ended. Or maybe, when it finally began.

I needed a property tax statement for our condo. Blake had left his home office door locked, but the spare key was always hidden behind the baseboard in the hallway. He thought he was clever. He had spent three years telling me my "cursed aura" brought bad luck to the family, convincing me to hand over my inheritance, my savings, and my trust so he could "cleanse" our wealth. I had believed him. I had felt guilty for breathing the same air as him.

I unlocked the door and stepped inside. The room smelled of sandalwood and expensive cologne.

I checked the mahogany desk first. The bottom drawer was stuck. I pulled harder, wiggling the brass handle until the wood gave a sharp pop. Inside lay a thick manila folder tucked beneath empty file sleeves.

I opened it.

The first page was on Mount Sinai letterhead. My name was typed across the top: *Harper Miller.* Underneath was the clinical diagnosis: *Stage IV Gastric Adenocarcinoma. Terminal.*

My breath caught in my throat. My stomach was fine. I ran four miles every morning. I had never seen an oncologist at Mount Sinai in my life.

My hands trembled as I lifted the medical file. Beneath it lay a second document: an accidental death insurance policy with a payout of five million dollars.

My eyes dropped straight to the bottom.

*Primary Beneficiaries: Blake Knight (50%), Sutton Herrera (50%).*

Sutton Herrera. His college sweetheart. The girl who supposedly moved out of state years ago.

A ringing started in my ears, high and shrill. They weren’t waiting for me to get sick. The cancer paperwork was just a backdrop. It would explain why a grieving husband wouldn't push for an autopsy if his sick wife suddenly slipped in the shower, or crashed her car, or took too many pills.

Five million dollars. Half for my husband. Half for his mistress.

The panic flared hot in my chest, and then, just as quickly, it went freezing cold.

I pulled my phone from my pocket. My hands didn't shake anymore. I took clear, crisp photos of every single page—the forged lab results, the policy terms, the signature lines. I tapped the drawer back into place, adjusted the manila folder to the exact angle I found it, and locked the office door behind me.

When I walked into the master bedroom, Blake was leaning against the headboard in gray silk pajamas. He adjusted his gold watch on the nightstand, scrolling through his phone. A soft chuckle escaped his lips.

"Who's funny?" I asked quietly, kicking off my slippers.

He locked the screen immediately. "Just a group chat with the guys from the gym. You look pale, Harper. Your energy is scattered tonight. Did you burn the sage like I asked?"

"I forgot," I said.

"You always forget," he sighed, sounding disappointed and patient, like a father dealing with a troubled child. "This is why bad things happen to us. Your aura is heavy. Come here. Let me ground you."

I lay down beside him on the king-sized bed. His arm went around my shoulders. His skin felt like ice against mine. He smelled like cedar and lies.

I stared up at the crown molding in the dark.

I could pack a bag. I could run to a shelter. But Blake would track me down, or hire someone to finish the job. If you run from a predator, you just become prey.

I wasn't going to run. I was going to dismantle him piece by piece.

Two days later, on Thursday afternoon, I took a cab across town to an insurance agency in Midtown. The office was quiet, smelling of paper and cheap coffee.

I sat across from an agent named Miller. I didn't flinch as I signed the final forms for a brand-new ten-million-dollar accidental death policy. I paid the first year's premium up front using the last hidden account Blake hadn't managed to touch.

Then came the beneficiary line.

I took the pen and wrote a name without hesitating: *Odin Porter.*

Odin was my college ex. We had broken up six years ago when he took a job at a firm in D.C. It hadn't ended in anger; it had ended because life pulled us in different directions. Now he was back in Manhattan, one of the most ruthless, brilliant criminal defense attorneys in the city.

Naming Odin was a deliberate shot across the bow. If Blake tried to kill me now, he wouldn't see a dime. Odin would inherit ten million dollars, and Odin was smart enough to figure out where every cent of blood money came from.

More than that, it was a flare fired into the dark.

On Friday afternoon, my tracking alert notified me that the certified letter had arrived at Odin’s law firm on Lexington Avenue.

I sat on the living room sofa, my hands wrapped around a mug of cold tea. The clock on the mantel ticked like a countdown.

Ten minutes later, my phone vibrated on the glass table.

*Odin Porter.*

I let it ring once. Then twice. I pressed the screen and brought the phone to my ear.

"Harper?"

His voice was deep, steady, and sharp. The background noise of his high-rise office was dead silent. I could hear the rustle of heavy paper on his end. He had opened the envelope.

"Odin," I said softly.

"I'm looking at a ten-million-dollar policy with my name on it," he said, skipping any polite greetings. His tone was tight, stripped of small talk. "What the hell is going on?"

I closed my eyes. The old Harper—the one who apologized for existing—was gone.

"I need your help," I said, my voice dead and clear. "My husband is trying to kill me."
