My Husband and Best Friend Got Married
Chapter 2
I held my cheek, staring at her in shock—how could she slap me?!
Why did she hit me?
What right did she have to hit me!?
But before I could ask her anything, tears started rolling down my face.
She pointed at me, cursing. "So what if I hit you? My son was just speaking the truth, and who do you think you are? You haven't even married into our family yet, and you're trying to discipline my son? Dream on!"
I hate how I cry whenever I'm angry—it makes me seem so weak.
I tried to defend myself. "Was I wrong? Junior made inappropriate jokes about my friend..."
By now, many of the guests had gathered around. I swallowed my frustration, unwilling to cause more trouble on such an important day. After all, she's an elder, so I could only explain that Junior had crossed the line.
But to my surprise, my mother-in-law showed no regard for propriety.
"Shut up! What kind of cheap girls are you all? You're all just after my son because he's outstanding, trying to worm your way into the Powell family. If it weren't for him liking you, do you think I'd ever approve of you?"
I couldn't believe she was saying such things in front of everyone.
Yes, I was the one who pursued James.
He was the most handsome guy in our school, and I fell for him the moment he helped me. I spent three months chasing him.
At first, James turned me down repeatedly, but I persisted—bringing him breakfast, fetching water for him, convincing his roommates to help with his laundry... I did everything I could.
For a while, everyone called me the ultimate simp.
Thankfully, James was finally moved and agreed to be with me.
We dated for four years, from university until after graduation.
We even broke the curse of couples breaking up after graduation. As soon as we found jobs, James proposed to me.
When I pursued James, I also made sure to win over his mom, doing everything I could to cater to her and please her.
I thought she liked me too.
I opened my mouth, turning my head to look for my support, James.
He was lowering his head, seemingly talking to Destiny, but as soon as I looked over, he immediately pulled me into his arms.
"Mom, what are you saying?" James frowned. "Alright, that's enough. Today is the most important day for Ayah and me. Whatever it is, we'll talk about it later!"
My mother-in-law glanced at James, then gave me an angry glare.
But I couldn't swallow this anger.
Their attitude was too abnormal.
Even James acted like it wasn't a big deal, turning major issues into minor ones, and minor ones into nothing.
"Why let it go? Your brother hasn't apologized yet, and your mom even slapped me."
I looked at James, feeling full of grievance. Today was humiliating enough, I needed an explanation.
James looked slightly annoyed and quietly comforted me. "Ayah, can we not talk about this right now?"
My mother-in-law raised her eyebrows. "Hmph, so what if I hit you? A disobedient wench deserves to be taught a lesson."
She kept calling me a wench, now and then, making my nose feel like it was stuffed with cotton. I couldn't breathe in or out, and I felt like I was about to explode.
Destiny also came to my side and gently said, "Ayah, let it go. Look at how upset you've made James' mom. We can talk about this later, okay?"
My mother-in-law glanced at the well-behaved Destiny and smiled. "Look how obedient and sensible Destiny is. Now look at you, you've completely disgraced yourself by marrying into the Powell family."
I swallowed back the curse words that were on the tip of my tongue, only managing to shout angrily, "James!"
He's my husband. Even if my mother-in-law is unreasonable because of her old age, he should at least recognize that his brother was wrong, right?
Besides, my mother-in-law said such things to me, completely looking down on me. Shouldn't he be defending me?
I looked at James with teary eyes full of grievance.
James sighed in frustration. "Honey, stop making a scene. Everyone's watching. Don't be so unreasonable."
