Chapter 3

I was holding a glass of champagne I hadn't touched when the lights dimmed.

The Shaw Foundation gala at The Plaza was the kind of event where every detail cost more than most people's rent. Orchids on every table. A string quartet in the corner. Three hundred people in gowns and tuxedos, all very certain of their own importance.

I thought the lights dimming meant the program was starting. The annual speech. The donation reveal. I had attended four of these with Deacon. I knew the rhythm.

Then the screen behind the stage lit up.

I didn't understand what I was looking at. Not at first. The image was large. My brain refused it for a full second—the way your eyes refuse a bright light.

Then it landed.

Me. My face. My body. Images I had taken for my husband, only for my husband, in the privacy of our bedroom, in the early years when I still believed that kind of trust was safe.

The champagne glass slipped in my hand. I caught it.

The ballroom went silent.

Three full seconds of absolute silence—three hundred people holding their breath at once—and then it broke, all at the same time, into something low and spreading. Murmurs. A woman near me put her hand over her mouth. A man to my left turned to look. They all turned to look.

All of them. At me.

I couldn't move. My feet were on the floor and I could feel the carpet under my heels and the glass was still in my hand and I could not move a single part of my body.

I found Deacon without looking for him. He was near the stage, off to the right, in his black dinner jacket with his jaw set and his eyes on the screen. Not on me. On the screen. Like he was watching a verdict being delivered.

Antonella was at his elbow.

She had her hand lightly on his arm and her face arranged into something mournful. Not gloating. Mournful. Her eyes were soft and wet and her lips pressed together with quiet sorrow, the way a person looks when they've done something terrible and convinced themselves it was necessary.

She had told him I did this. I understood that in an instant. She had stood in front of him with her tears and her wounded voice and told him I sent those photographs somewhere, shared them with someone, that this was who I was—vindictive, ugly, deserving of what he was about to do. And he had believed her.

He had believed her.

Something in my chest didn't break. It just went quiet. Like a clock stopping.

I set the champagne glass on the nearest table. Very carefully. I didn't want to drop it.

I walked to the door. I didn't run. I didn't cover my face. I didn't look at anyone. I moved through the room like I was the only person in it, and I pushed through the heavy door and out into the lobby.

I didn't get my coat.

The Plaza's entrance opened into the cold and I walked out into it. November in New York. The air came off Central Park in sheets. My bare arms went numb in under a minute.

I didn't feel it.

I hailed a cab. I got in. I gave the address.

I watched the city go by through the window and I did not think about the screen or the silence or the three hundred faces. I thought about one thing only.

I thought about the boarding ramp. The dark green harbor water through the grating. My white knuckles on the metal rail. The four seconds of breath I counted because Dr. Hale's voice was the only thing keeping me upright. I had gotten on that ship. For him. I had done the hardest thing I knew how to do, and I had done it for him, and he had been on the upper deck with his hands in her hair.

The cab stopped. I paid. I went up.

The penthouse was dark. I didn't turn on lights.

I slipped off my wedding ring. It took one second. I set it on the mantle. I looked at it for a moment—three years of marriage sitting in a small gold circle—and then I went to the fireplace and I lit it.

I went through the apartment in the dark. I knew where everything was. The wedding album on the bottom shelf. The letters in the box in the closet—his handwriting, all the things he'd written me in the first year. The photo from our first anniversary, both of us laughing at something I can't even remember now. The velvet box with the bracelet he gave me at Christmas. A pressed flower from some dinner he'd arranged.

And the boarding pass. Folded twice. Still in my coat pocket from the ship, the coat I'd grabbed on the way out of the hotel that night. I had kept it without deciding to.

I dropped it in last.

I sat on the floor in front of the fireplace and I watched every single thing curl and go black.

I didn't cry. There was nothing left to cry with.

When the fire burned down to nothing, I got up. I went to the desk. I opened my laptop.

I typed: one-way flights to Gothenburg, Sweden.

I booked the first one I could get.
