Chapter 1

The arena smelled like popcorn, cold air, and money.

I held Lily's mittened hand in one of mine and two VIP passes in the other, the lanyards wrapped so tightly around my fingers that the plastic cards had gone warm. Both said the same thing in bold silver letters: CARTER FAMILY.

"Mommy, is Daddy gonna win?" Lily bounced on her toes, her giant foam finger bumping my elbow. She was five, and she'd been wearing her father's jersey since breakfast.

"That's the plan, sweetheart."

I held the first pass under the scanner.

The light flashed red.

I tried again. Red.

The usher, a young guy with a headset and a tablet, frowned at the screen. "Sorry, ma'am. These have been deactivated."

"That's not possible. My husband is Ryan Carter. These came straight from the team."

He scrolled, then read it out loud like it was nothing. "Family suite, front row. Sloane Bishop and Poppy Bishop." He glanced up at me, and something like pity crossed his face. "Those seats are assigned to Ms. Bishop and her daughter now."

Behind him, through the glass-fronted family suite, I could see them.

A blonde woman in a white cashmere coat sat in the front row, right against the glass, where the view of the ice was perfect. Next to her was a little girl, maybe six, swinging her legs.

Our seats.

Down on the rink, a skate carved hard into the ice, and the sharp scrape went straight through me.

Eight years ago, Ryan had lain in a hospital bed with his knee wrecked and his career supposedly finished. He'd gripped my hand so hard it hurt.

"Every best seat I ever get," he'd said, "goes to you and our kids. I swear, Nora."

I'd sold my mother's lake cabin to pay for his private trainers and the eighteen months of rehab no insurance would touch. The cabin where she taught me to swim. The last thing I had of her that wasn't in a box.

"Ma'am?" the usher said. "I'm going to need you to step aside."

I didn't step aside. I raised my phone instead.

Through the glass, I zoomed in on the seat placards. A fresh white sticker had been pressed over each one, and the edge of the old label peeked out underneath. I could still read a C and part of an A.

CARTER FAMILY, covered up like a typo.

I took the picture. The timestamp glowed in the corner of the screen. 7:42 p.m.

"What are you doing?" the usher asked.

"Documenting." I kept my voice level. "Can you show me the failed scan log? I'd like a photo of that too."

He hesitated, then turned the tablet toward me. Two entries, both marked INVALID. I photographed it.

Then the little girl in the suite turned her head, and the arena lights caught something at her throat.

A gold locket. Small, oval, with blue enamel on the front and a thin crack running through the color like a vein.

My hand went numb around the phone.

Lily tugged my sleeve. "Mommy." Her voice was small and confused. "Why is that girl wearing Grandma's necklace?"

Two days ago, Ryan had come home early for once. He'd kissed my cheek and said he wanted to borrow my mother's locket so Lily could wear it in the champion family photo the team was planning.

I'd gone upstairs and taken the velvet box out of my dresser. I'd wiped the dust from the lid with my sleeve before I handed it to him.

"Be careful with it," I'd said.

"Babe. Relax. It's me."

Standing there, everything lined up so neatly it almost made me laugh. The phone he'd started leaving face down on the counter three months ago. The family photo shoot that got canceled twice. The new rule about the locker room being off-limits to families this season, even though the other wives still posted pictures from inside.

All of it pointed at the two dead passes in my hand.

Lily was still staring at the glass. "Can we go sit with Daddy's friends?"

I could have pounded on that door. I could have made a scene big enough to end up on every sports blog by midnight.

I put my phone in my pocket.

"Not tonight, baby."

We watched the third period from the concourse TV, standing beside a hot dog stand. When the final horn went off, the whole building shook. Champagne mist drifted out of the open tunnel doors, and somebody screamed Ryan's name loud enough to rattle my teeth.

On the giant broadcast screen, my husband lifted the Stanley Cup over his head. Sweat ran down his face. He was grinning like a kid.

A reporter shoved a mic toward him. "Ryan, it's been a long road back. Who's been there for you through all of it?"

Ryan looked up at the family suite. The camera followed his eyes and landed on Sloane Bishop, her hand pressed to her heart.

"Sloane is the one who never stopped believing in me," he said into the mic. "She's my rock."

The crowd roared.

Lily stood on tiptoe, waving her foam finger. "Daddy! Daddy, I'm here!"

Nobody heard her. Flashbulbs went off all around us, and a group of drunk fans in face paint pushed past, nearly knocking her over. I pulled her against my leg.

Ten minutes later, Ryan came down the media hallway still in his gear, a towel around his neck, a team PR girl trailing behind him. He saw me and slowed. Then he saw my face, and his smile dropped.

"Seriously, Nora? You couldn't just be happy for me tonight?"

"You gave away our seats."

"It's not a big deal. Sloane's been through a lot. Poppy's never been to a game like this." He scrubbed the towel over his hair. "She's a little girl who deserves to be celebrated too."

"She's wearing my mother's locket."

His jaw tightened. "Can we not do this here?"

"You told me it was for Lily. For a family photo."

"I said not here." He leaned in, his voice dropping. "Sloane is the one who never stopped believing in me. Don't make tonight about you."

Lily looked up at him, her foam finger drooping. "Daddy, I cheered really loud."

For half a second, something moved across his face. Then the PR girl touched his arm and said the photographers were waiting with Ms. Bishop, and he was already turning away.

He hadn't explained the seats. He hadn't explained the necklace. He hadn't even said Lily's name.

I knelt and fixed Lily's scarf, tucking the loose end into her coat so the cold wouldn't get in.

That was all. I was done waiting for him to be sorry.

By the security desk near the media exit, I slid my wedding ring off my finger. It came off easier than I expected. I zipped it into the inside pocket of my coat.

The guard at the desk was older, gray at the temples, with a name badge that said DONNELLY.

"I need a written record of the family suite reassignment," I said. "Who authorized it, and when."

"Ma'am, that's internal."

"My daughter and I were denied entry with valid credentials. I'm entitled to know why."

He studied me for a long moment, then pulled up the file. He didn't print it, but he didn't stop me when I leaned over the tablet.

REASSIGNMENT AUTHORIZED BY: RYAN CARTER, PLAYER. AUTH #FS-2291-RC.

I photographed it twice to make sure the number was clear.

"Thank you," I said.

Donnelly looked at Lily, then back at me. "For what it's worth, I'm sorry."

Outside the glass doors, rain was coming down hard on the parking lot. I opened my messages and found Margaret Kline, the divorce attorney I'd consulted once, quietly, back in April, when the phone first started landing face down.

I attached three photos: the covered name card, the failed scan log, and the authorization number.

Then I typed: I'm ready to proceed.

Behind us, the media wall lit up with flashes. I didn't turn around. I knew what I'd see. Ryan, Sloane, Poppy, and the Cup, smiling for the cameras.

Lily dragged her feet. Halfway to the doors, she stopped completely.

"Mommy?" Her lip shook. "Is it because I wasn't good enough? Is that why Daddy didn't want me sitting there?"

I crouched down on the wet tile so we were eye to eye. Her cheeks were pink from the cold, and she was clutching the foam finger to her chest like it might get taken too.

"Listen to me, Lily. Your father made his choice. You didn't do anything wrong."

"But—"

"What other people choose doesn't decide what you're worth. Not even Daddy. Okay?"

She sniffed and nodded slowly, though I wasn't sure she believed me yet.

I stood and opened my hand. The two VIP passes lay in my palm, damp from the rain blowing in under the doors. CARTER FAMILY, still in silver letters. Completely useless now.

My phone buzzed.

Under my message to Margaret, a small green notice appeared.

Read.
