Chapter 3

At 5:30 AM, I walked away from the screens and the evidence files and the careful architecture of everything we'd built. My feet were cold on the hardwood. The apartment was quiet except for the hum of Armani's laptop and the sound of Lucian breathing on the couch.

I went to the kitchen and filled the kettle. While it heated, I measured coffee beans into the grinder. Twenty-two grams. Always twenty-two. I pressed the button and the sound filled the space. Sharp and immediate.

The water reached temperature. I poured it slowly over the grounds, watching them bloom and rise. Dark and perfect. The smell was the first real thing I'd noticed in hours.

"You're awake."

I turned. Lucian was sitting up, a legal brief sliding off his chest onto the floor. His hair was messy. His shirt was wrinkled. He looked at me the way he always did.

"I didn't mean to wake you," I said.

"You didn't." He stood and walked over, stopping a few feet away. Close enough to talk. Far enough to let me breathe. "That smells good."

I poured the coffee into my cup. Steam rose between us.

"Do you want some?" I asked.

"No. I just wanted to make sure you were okay."

I held the cup in both hands. The warmth spread through my palms.

"I'm fine," I said.

He nodded. He didn't argue. He didn't tell me it was okay not to be fine. He just stood there, and somehow that was exactly right.

We stayed like that for a while. The sky outside started to change. Not light yet. Just less dark.

"Today's going to be hard," he said finally.

"I know."

"But you're going to be incredible."

I looked at him. He wasn't smiling. He wasn't trying to make me feel better. He was just telling me what he believed.

"Thank you," I said.

He nodded once and went back to the couch. I stayed at the counter, drinking my coffee, watching the city wake up.

---

At nine o'clock, my stylist arrived. Then the makeup artist. Then Clara, my father's housekeeper, who'd known me since I was six and insisted on being there to help me dress.

My gown hung in the bedroom. White silk. Thousands of tiny beads catching the light. I'd chosen it eight months ago. I remembered standing in the boutique, turning in front of the mirror, imagining Gage's face when he saw it.

Now I looked at it and felt nothing.

Clara helped me step into it. Her hands were steady on the buttons. She'd done this for my mother once. For my grandmother before that. Larson women getting married in white.

I was the last one.

"You look beautiful, dear," Clara said softly.

I met her eyes in the mirror. She knew. I could see it. She'd worked for my father for thirty years. She'd served coffee to the Wheelers when they came for dinner. She'd watched Gage walk through our home like he belonged there.

She knew exactly what kind of day this was.

"Thank you, Clara," I said.

She nodded and stepped back.

My assistant, Jordan, appeared in the doorway. She was twenty-four, sharp, terrified of disappointing me. She held her tablet like a shield.

"Ms. Larson, the venue called. They want to confirm the AV setup. They said there's a separate feed that's not connected to the house audio and they wanted to make sure—"

"It's correct," I said. "Make sure the screens stay on that feed. No changes."

Jordan blinked. "The screens?"

"The main displays. The ones facing the audience. They need to be on the separate system. Not the house audio. Confirm it."

"Okay. Yes. I'll confirm it right now."

She left. Clara was watching me.

"Are you sure about this, dear?" she asked quietly.

I looked at myself in the mirror. The dress fit perfectly. My hair was perfect. My makeup was perfect. I looked exactly like a bride.

"I'm sure," I said.

---

Armani texted me at 10:15.

*At the venue. Everything's in place. The team knows what to do. Livestream tested and live. You're good to go.*

I read it twice. Then I typed back.

*Thank you.*

Three dots appeared. Then disappeared. Then appeared again.

*You're going to be amazing. I love you.*

I set the phone down and took a breath.

Across town, Armani was walking through the Plaza ballroom with a man named Eric who was supposed to be part of the venue's AV crew but was actually a forensic tech Lucian knew from college. They moved through the space like they belonged there. Checking cables. Testing feeds. Making sure every screen, every camera, every microphone was exactly where it needed to be.

The evidence files were loaded. Sequenced. Timed to the second.

The livestream was live on every Larson Group social media channel. Fifteen thousand people were already watching. Waiting for the ceremony to start. Expecting a wedding.

Armani stood at the back of the ballroom and looked at the empty chairs. Five hundred seats. Five hundred of the most powerful people in New York. Investors. Politicians. Socialites. Rivals. Friends.

Every single one of them about to watch Gage Wheeler's world end.

She pulled out her phone and texted the lead technician.

*We're ready.*

He responded immediately.

*Standing by.*

Armani looked at the screens mounted on either side of the altar. Blank and waiting.

She thought: *Gage Wheeler has no idea what today actually is.*

Then she walked out to meet the first guests.
