Chapter 4

The first guests arrived at 2:47 PM.

I watched them from the bride's suite on the second floor of the venue, a converted mansion overlooking Central Park. Through the window, I could see the terrace where the ceremony would take place. White chairs arranged in perfect rows. An arch covered in roses. The kind of setup people photographed for magazines.

Five hundred chairs. Five hundred people who mattered.

Jordan stood beside me with her tablet, tracking arrivals. "Senator Morrison just pulled up. The Castellanos are here. Mrs. Rousseau is asking about the seating chart."

"Tell her it's final," I said.

Jordan nodded and stepped away, speaking quietly into her phone.

I turned back to the mirror. My dress caught the afternoon light. Thousands of tiny beads. My grandmother's veil. Everything exactly as I'd planned eight months ago.

Except for what came next.

Armani appeared in the doorway. She wore navy silk and carried herself like she was walking into a courtroom. She met my eyes in the mirror.

"They're in place," she said quietly. "Front row. Looking very pleased with themselves."

I didn't need to ask who. I could picture it. Mr. Wheeler in his custom suit. Mrs. Wheeler with her diamond brooch, the one she wore to every important occasion. Both of them sitting in those front-row seats like thrones.

"Good," I said.

Armani stepped closer. Her voice dropped. "Lucian's here. Third row, aisle seat. He wanted you to know."

Something in my chest loosened. Just slightly.

"Okay," I said.

She studied me for a moment. "You look beautiful."

"I look ready."

A small smile crossed her face. "That too."

She left. I stood alone in the suite, listening to the sounds filtering up from below. Voices. Laughter. The string quartet warming up. All of it familiar. All of it exactly what a wedding was supposed to sound like.

Jordan came back, her face tight. "Ms. Larson. There's—someone just arrived. I think you should know."

I turned. "Who?"

She swallowed. "Leyla Herrera. She's wearing... she's in white."

I walked to the window. From this angle, I could see the terrace entrance. Guests were still arriving, moving through the space in clusters. And there, walking toward her seat with deliberate calm, was Leyla.

White gown. Fitted bodice. Full skirt. Not identical to mine, but close enough that every person who saw it would understand exactly what she was doing.

Jordan stood frozen beside me. "Should I—do you want me to—"

"No," I said.

She blinked. "No?"

"Let her sit."

"But Ms. Larson—"

I turned to face her. "Let her sit exactly where she planned to sit. Don't change anything."

Jordan stared at me. Then she nodded slowly and left.

I looked back at the terrace. Leyla had reached her seat now, fourth row center. Close enough to be seen. Close enough to matter. She settled into her chair with the posture of someone who'd just won something.

I watched her for ten seconds. Then I turned away.

My phone buzzed. A text from Armani.

*Saw the dress. You okay?*

I typed back.

*Perfect.*

Three dots appeared. Then:

*That's my girl.*

---

Downstairs, the terrace was nearly full. Sunlight filtered through the trees. Champagne circulated on silver trays. Conversations hummed with the particular energy of people who knew they were being watched by other people who mattered.

Mrs. Wheeler leaned toward the woman beside her—Patricia Castellano, whose husband ran half the commercial real estate in Midtown.

"Such a lovely day," Mrs. Wheeler said. "Maeve is very fortunate. Gage has been so patient with her."

Patricia's smile didn't reach her eyes. "How generous of him."

Mrs. Wheeler missed the edge in her voice entirely. She adjusted her brooch and settled back in her seat, scanning the crowd with the satisfaction of someone surveying conquered territory.

Four rows behind her, Leyla sat very still. Her hands were folded in her lap. Her expression was serene. She'd practiced this look in the mirror that morning. Calm. Untouchable. The woman who'd already won.

She didn't notice the way several guests had glanced at her dress, then away. She didn't catch the whispered exchange between two women in the row behind her. She was too focused on the moment she'd been building toward for months.

The moment Maeve would walk down that aisle and see her sitting there. In white. Unavoidable.

Leyla smiled to herself.

---

At the altar, Gage checked his watch. 3:04 PM. Eleven minutes until the ceremony started. He straightened his bow tie, then his cuffs. His right hand moved to his left cufflink and stayed there.

Three seconds. Four.

He dropped his hand and turned to scan the crowd. Five hundred faces. He knew most of them. Had shaken their hands at galas, closed deals over dinner, built relationships that would matter after today.

After the marriage was finalized.

His eyes found his family's attorney in the third row. Gerald Moss. The man who'd drafted the contracts. The ones that didn't exist yet on paper but would, the day after the wedding. The ones that would change everything.

Gage caught Gerald's eye. Gerald nodded once. Small. Private.

Gage smiled.

Everything was proceeding exactly as planned.

The string quartet shifted into position. The guests quieted. The ceremony was about to begin.

In the bride's suite, I took one last look in the mirror. My father appeared in the doorway. He wore his tuxedo the way he wore everything—like it had been made for him, because it had.

He looked at me for a long moment. His expression was unreadable.

"Are you ready?" he asked.

I picked up my bouquet. White roses. My grandmother's.

"Yes," I said.

He offered his arm. I took it.

We walked toward the terrace together. Toward five hundred people. Toward Gage at the altar. Toward Leyla in her white dress.

Toward the ending I had written.

The doors opened. The music began.

I stepped into the light.
