Chapter 2

Armani didn't ask if I was sure. She just opened her laptop and started typing.

I watched her fingers move across the keys. Fast, precise, like she was building something. Maybe she was. She pulled up a screen full of code I didn't understand, then another with file directories, then a login page for something that looked official and probably wasn't supposed to be accessed at one in the morning.

"His email," she said. "What's the domain?"

I told her. She typed it in, ran something, waited. Lines of text scrolled past. She leaned closer to the screen.

"He's sloppy," she said. "Used the same password for three different accounts. Amateur."

She clicked through folders. Sent items. Drafts. Attachments. Her expression didn't change, but her jaw tightened.

"Maeve."

I looked at the screen. It was an email. The subject line read: Larson Group — Q3 Structural Analysis.

I read the first paragraph. Then the second. Then I stopped reading and just stared.

"When was this sent?" I asked.

Armani checked the timestamp. "Four months ago. To an LLC registered in Delaware. I'm running it now."

She opened another window, pulled up a corporate registry database, typed in the company name. Results loaded. She clicked through layers of ownership structures, shell companies nested inside other shell companies.

"There," she said, pointing at a name buried six levels deep. "Gage's cousin. The one who works in private equity."

I sat back. My hands were cold.

"He's been mapping us," I said.

"Not just you." Armani opened another email. This one had an attachment — a spreadsheet with names I recognized. Families I'd known my entire life. The Castellanos. The Rousseaus. The IPO valuations of their private holdings. Board meeting schedules. Voting share percentages.

"He's been mapping everyone," Armani said quietly.

She kept digging. I watched her work, the glow of the laptop screen reflected in her eyes. She found encrypted chats. File transfers. A shared drive with folders labeled by family name. She found wire transfers to offshore accounts. She found a contract — unsigned, but drafted — outlining the dissolution and reallocation of Larson Group assets in the event of a merger.

A merger that didn't exist.

Except it would have. The day after the wedding. When Gage became family.

"This isn't an affair," Armani said. "This is corporate espionage."

I didn't answer. I was reading an email Gage had sent to someone named Vincent Khoury. The message was short.

Once the marriage is finalized, we move. She trusts me. Her father trusts me. They won't see it until it's done.

I read it twice. Then I stood up and walked to the window. The city stretched out below, lights scattered across the dark. I'd grown up here. I knew every corner of this place. I thought I knew every corner of my life.

"Maeve."

I turned. Armani was holding her phone.

"I'm calling someone," she said. "FBI. Financial crimes. I know a guy from law school. He'll move fast."

"Do it," I said.

She stepped into the hallway. I heard her voice, low and steady, explaining something in the clipped language lawyers use when they need someone to pay attention. She came back three minutes later.

"He wants everything," she said. "Every file, every email, every transaction record. He said if this is what it looks like, they'll have agents at the wedding."

"Good," I said.

Armani looked at me. "You're really going through with it?"

"Yes."

"Maeve—"

"I want everyone to see," I said. "I want them all in the room when it happens."

She nodded slowly. Then she sat back down and kept working.

I don't know what time it was when my doorbell rang. Late. Early. The sky was still dark. Armani looked up, frowning.

I checked the security camera feed on my phone. Lucian stood in the hallway holding two paper bags.

I opened the door.

He looked at me. Not the way people usually looked at me — not the polished version, the heiress, the girl in the society pages. He looked at me the way he always had, since we were kids at those long Hamptons summers. Like he actually saw me.

"You don't have to explain anything," he said. "I just figured you hadn't eaten."

I stared at him. My throat felt tight.

"Armani called you," I said.

"She sent me a list of company names. Asked me to cross-reference them. I did. Then I thought you might be hungry."

He held up the bags. I smelled bread. Soup. Something warm.

I stepped aside and let him in.

He set the bags on the counter and started unpacking containers. French onion soup. A baguette. The kind of salad that cost thirty dollars and came in a tiny wooden bowl. He opened drawers until he found spoons, set one beside the soup, and looked at me.

"Eat," he said.

I picked up the container. It was still hot. I took a spoonful. It tasted like something I'd forgotten existed.

Lucian leaned against the counter, watching me. Not hovering. Just there.

"Thank you," I said.

He nodded. "Anytime."

Armani appeared in the doorway. She looked at Lucian, then at me, then back at her brother.

"You brought food," she said.

"She hadn't eaten," Lucian said.

Armani's expression softened. Just for a second. Then she turned back to me.

"We've got everything," she said. "It's all documented. Encrypted. Backed up in three places. When you're ready, we move."

I set down the soup. My hands were steady.

"I'm ready," I said.
