Chapter 3

I packed the same way I did everything — quietly, without asking anyone to witness it.

The staff room was small enough that one suitcase covered most of the floor. I folded things in the dark because the overhead light had a flicker that had never been fixed, and I'd stopped asking about it weeks ago. One suitcase. I'd arrived with two, but I left one behind. I didn't need the dresses. I didn't need anything that belonged to the version of me who had stood at that altar.

I canceled the Boston surgery date at 11:47 p.m. The automated system thanked me for calling. I said, "You're welcome," out loud, to no one, and then sat on the edge of the bed for a long time.

Tyler's old laptop was on the kitchen counter — he'd left it charging there weeks ago and never came back for it. I borrowed it without guilt. At 3 a.m. the apartment was completely still, the kind of still that only happens when a building full of people is asleep and no one knows you're awake.

Frontier Teach Fellowship. Rural placement. One semester.

I read the whole site twice. I read the placement descriptions — the reservation schools, the border towns, the mesa communities with the leaking roofs and the donated supplies and the teachers who left after Christmas. I typed slowly. Under placement preference I wrote: rural New Mexico, twenty-two students or fewer. Under personal statement I wrote three sentences and deleted them. Then I wrote one sentence and left it.

*I know how to stay.*

I submitted the application at 4:18 a.m. They called at 6:02. I answered on the first ring.

I booked the earliest flight to Albuquerque before the sun came up.

I didn't leave a note. There was nothing to say that hadn't already been said in that hospital room, in the sound of paper tearing, in the weight of a ring on a bedside tray. I closed the door to the staff room behind me and did not look down the hall toward Sabrina's suite, with its untouched furniture and its soft lighting and its nineteen years of accumulated love. I just walked to the elevator and pressed the button and went down.

---

The drive from Albuquerque took four hours. The land opened up somewhere past Santa Fe — red rock and scrub brush and sky so wide it felt like a correction, like the world reminding you of its actual size. I had the window down. The air smelled like dust and something dry and clean I didn't have a name for.

Redstone Mesa Elementary was a two-room building at the end of a dirt road with a hand-lettered sign above the door. The paint on the sign was careful, block letters, blue on white. Someone had taken time with it. I sat in the rental car for a moment and looked at it.

Principal Rita Lucero was already in the parking lot when I got out. She was a compact woman in her fifties, boots, a silver braid down her back, the look of someone who had learned to assess people fast and accurately.

She shook my hand. Firm, brief.

"You're the one who answered on the first ring," she said. "I respect that."

"I was awake," I said.

She looked at me for one more second — not unkindly, just reading — and then turned and walked me around the side of the building to the trailer. It was small and clean. A bed, a table, two windows. A bathroom with a mirror above the sink.

She left me to settle in. I unpacked the suitcase first, which took eleven minutes. Then I went to the bathroom, tore a sheet of construction paper from the supply box I'd brought, and taped it over the mirror. I smoothed the edges down with my thumb.

I didn't need to see my face right now. I just needed to be somewhere I had chosen.

---

The children arrived the next morning on a bus that rattled down the dirt road trailing a small cloud of red dust. Twenty-two of them, ages six to eleven, filing in with the particular wariness of people who have watched things change before and learned not to trust the change.

I stood at the front of the room and said my name and told them what we were going to do that semester. No one smiled. No one was rude. They just watched me, measuring.

I understood that. I'd spent my whole life being measured.

Waffles came in with the last child — a three-legged dog, brown and unhurried, moving with the easy confidence of an animal that had long ago made peace with his particular geometry. He crossed the room without looking at anyone, walked directly to my desk, circled once, and lay down underneath it.

He didn't leave for the rest of the day.

In the back row, a girl with a sharp face and a book open in her lap watched everything with eyes that missed nothing. She didn't speak. She didn't need to. She was already the most present person in the room.

I pressed my thumb against the edge of my thumbnail, once, and let go.

Then I picked up the chalk and started teaching.
