Chapter 4

On the third day, I woke before the sun and drove into town for a bucket of patching compound. The hardware store owner didn't ask why a new teacher needed roofing supplies. He just told me the good ladder was in aisle four and to watch my footing, the tin got slick with dew this time of year.

I climbed up before anyone arrived. The leak was easy to find — a dark stain over the reading corner, shaped like a state I didn't recognize. I scraped the old caulk with a putty knife, laid the compound in thick even strokes, and pressed a patch of flashing over the worst of it. My hands remembered the motion. Novalee taught me this on our own roof, years ago, both of us balanced on a ladder that wobbled if you breathed wrong. *Put your coat on first,* she used to say, handing me the tools. *Then we fix things.*

I came down, wiped my palms on my jeans, and went inside to fix the lighting over the reading corner too — moved the lamp six inches left so it wouldn't glare off the picture books. Small thing. Nobody would notice unless they were looking for comfort in a corner of a room, which some kids are always doing.

A car door shut in the lot. I looked out the window and saw Ainara sitting on the hood of her aunt's truck, knees pulled up, watching the roof like she'd seen the whole thing. She didn't wave. She didn't come in early. She just watched, the way she watched everything, filing it away behind that flat, careful face.

When the bell rang and the kids filed in, there was a book on my desk. Thin, well-worn, a library sticker peeling at the corner. I hadn't seen anyone put it there. I looked up and Ainara was already in her seat, reading something else, like she had nothing to do with it.

Rita told me later that was the first thing Ainara had given a teacher in eight months. I didn't know that yet. I just knew it felt like being handed something fragile, and I set it on the shelf like it mattered, because it did.

---

On Day Four, during quiet reading, I sat at my desk with my grant notebook open, the one where I'd started writing lines about roof repair costs and per-pupil book funding in the same margins where, two nights before, I'd been drafting a goodbye letter to no one in particular.

"Are you staying?"

I looked up. Ainara hadn't lifted her eyes from her book. The question just came out flat, into the room, the way she did everything.

I thought about lying. I thought about the soft, easy thing — *of course, sweetheart, I'm not going anywhere* — the kind of sentence I'd heard other adults hand children like candy. I didn't have it in me anymore. I was done handing out sentences I didn't believe.

"I don't know yet," I said.

She nodded once. Just once. Then she turned a page and kept reading, like the answer had been sufficient, like honesty was the only currency she'd ever actually trusted.

Something moved in my chest, low and quiet. Nobody had ever accepted *I don't know* from me before. It had always needed fixing, softening, apologizing for. She just took it and went back to her book.

I closed the goodbye letter in my head that night and opened the grant application instead. Waffles slept under the desk while I typed. I wrote about the roof, the twenty-two kids, the reading corner that finally had good light.

On a terrace in Positano, sixteen days after Savannah disappeared, Lauren Reed set down her glass of Aperol and asked, in the tone of someone checking a delivery date, "Has anyone heard from Savannah?"

Nobody answered right away. The sea below the terrace was doing something gold and indifferent in the last of the light.

Patrick took out his phone and called the doorman on Fifth Avenue, more out of habit than urgency — the kind of call a man makes to close a loop, not open one.

"She moved out two weeks ago," the doorman said. "No forwarding address on file."

Patrick relayed this, and Lauren made a small sound, something between concern and inconvenience, and reached for the bread basket. Sabrina, across the table, said nothing, and turned her wine glass slowly by the stem.

Tyler didn't say that he already knew. He'd known since Day Four, when he opened his phone at 2 a.m. out of some habit he couldn't name and saw the empty room where her contact photo used to sit, unlinked, unattached, gone.

He hadn't told anyone. He'd sat with it instead, the way he sat with most things now, cataloguing rather than confessing.

That night, back in his hotel room, with the shutters open and the sea loud below the window, he opened his notes app and typed one line, the way he always did, the ledger he kept for no one but himself.

*I noticed on Day Four.*

He didn't write anything else. There wasn't anything else that wouldn't have made it worse.
