Chapter 2

Three days after the wedding, my face still held the shadow of his hand — a faint yellow-green along the cheekbone, the kind of bruise makeup could almost hide. I didn't bother hiding it. I put on a coat and drove to Lenox Hill with the pathology report folded into a plain white envelope, and I told myself I would just say the words and leave.

Sabrina's room smelled like lilies and antiseptic. She was propped against the pillows, an IV taped to the back of her hand, looking exactly as fragile as she needed to look. Lauren sat in the chair closest to the bed, holding a cup of ice chips like it was a sacred object. Patrick stood by the window in his suit, because he'd come from the office, because he always came from somewhere important. Tyler leaned against the wall near the door, arms crossed, phone in his hand like he might need it any second. Conrad stood at the foot of the bed.

Nobody looked at me when I came in. I was used to that. I walked to the middle of the room anyway and held out the envelope.

"I need to schedule surgery," I said. "Within six weeks. This is the biopsy."

Tyler laughed. It came out short and involuntary, a single huff of air, the kind of sound a person makes before they can stop it. He caught himself and looked at the floor, but the sound was already out there, hanging in the room.

"Now?" Lauren didn't get up. She swirled the ice chips once and set the cup down on the tray table. "Savannah, this is not the time to hijack your sister's crisis."

"I'm not hijacking anything," I said. "I'm telling you I have cancer."

The word sat in the air and nobody picked it up.

Conrad crossed the room and took the envelope out of my hand. For half a second I thought — stupidly, out of ten years of habit — that he was going to open it. That he was going to read it and something in his face was going to change.

He tore it in half instead. Didn't open it first. Just folded it once and ripped, the paper giving with a soft, final sound, and dropped both halves on the little rolling table by Sabrina's bed, next to a box of tissues and a paper cup of pills.

"If you want attention," he said, "learn to earn it."

I looked at Patrick. He was staring at the floor, hands folded in front of him like a man at a funeral for someone he didn't know well enough to cry for. He didn't say anything. He didn't look up.

I stood there holding nothing — my hands empty now, the envelope in two pieces on a hospital tray — and I understood, with a clarity that didn't hurt the way I expected it to, exactly what I was worth in that room. Less than a laugh. Less than ice chips. Less than the piece of paper itself, which was now garbage.

I didn't say anything else. There wasn't anything left to say that they hadn't already answered.

I was still in the doorway, deciding whether my legs would carry me out, when Sabrina made a small sound and pressed her hand to her chest and said, faintly, "I can't — the room's spinning — " and swayed toward the window ledge like something invisible had pulled her.

The room detonated into motion. Lauren was up, calling for a nurse. Patrick was at the bed. Two nurses came through the door fast, one of them reaching for the call button, the other steadying Sabrina by the shoulders. "She's fine, her pressure's fine, just breathe, honey, breathe" — and under all of it, Sabrina's eyes found mine for one flat, clear second before she let her head fall back against the pillow like the effort had cost her everything.

Conrad grabbed my arm. Hard enough to bruise the bruise already there.

"You did this," he said. "You can't be in the same room as her. Do you understand that? You can't just — "

His hand came across my face before I finished hearing the sentence. The second time. I heard it more than felt it — a flat crack that filled the small room, louder than it should have been, loud enough that one of the nurses actually froze, hand still on the call button, staring.

Neither of my parents moved. Patrick kept his eyes on Sabrina. Lauren kept hers on the ice chips.

I didn't cry. I want that on record, even if only for myself — I didn't cry, and I didn't apologize, and I didn't ask anyone in that room to explain themselves.

I reached down and worked the ring off my finger. It caught a little at the knuckle, the way it always had, and I twisted it free and set it on the bedside tray — next to Sabrina's lip balm, next to the call button, next to the two torn halves of a document that had my name and a cancer diagnosis on it, that not one person in this family had bothered to read.

Then I turned around and walked out of the room, down the hall, past the nurses' station, through the sliding doors, into the parking lot, and I did not look back once. Not at the building. Not at the window. Not at any of them.
